Attorney John Rutledge explains how his profession has assassinated Atticus Finch and what he and his colleagues must do to bring him back.
John Rutledge, Esquire, has repeatedly been named to the annual BEST LAWYERS IN AMERICA directory. During his career, he has attained the highest-possible peer review rating by, among other things, serving as exclusive transactional counsel for a huge real estate portfolio, multiple publicly traded corporations, and a foreign nation-state in its negotiations for the television reality series SURVIVOR: Palau. He has also done legal work for, and protected and enforced the intellectual property rights of, famous musicians and several of the world’s largest software companies. In addition, Mr. Rutledge is a former candidate for Governor of our great state and is an avid entrepreneur, investor, and Ironman® triathlete. He received his undergraduate degree (a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, 1994) from Loyola Marymount University, his law degree from the Howard University School of Law (1997), and a graduate law degree from the University of Miami, School of Law.

Having gone to school with Mr. Rutledge, I may be biased, but I found his talk inspiring and making me a bit wistful for simpler times when trust and compromise were at the heart of a good community. Utilizing the model of a beloved literary character, Mr. Rutledge gives a compelling and thoughtful speech that should be required viewing, not only for lawyers, but for anyone considering hiring a lawyer. It speaks not only to that faction of society that has lost its sense of justice, but to a society, at large, that is struggling to recall a simpler time when people acted like grown-ups and talked before escalating into litigation. He gives a well paced, clear and entertaining take on his subject matter. Well done!

A thoughtful indictment regarding the misuse of the legal system, while at the same time reminding us of our solemn duty as citizens at all levels to insist on restoring, embracing and celebrating the pursuit of justice: not as a means to divide and tear down our social fabric, but to build it up.

Very good points. I hope as a society we can work towards working things out without superfluous litigation. Seems like we're quick to that option.

Thanks, Danny, for sharing your viewpoint. I agree, as you might expect, that our society has become FAR too litigious. I look forward to a day when mundane issues can be resolved by reasonableness and, where possible, consensus building, rather than threats of -- and the intimidation from -- litigation.

I was a Security Officer for 20 years, and have witnessed an assortment of wrongs committed against people every day which will never see the light of a court room. Of course there's a percentage of fraud especially in accident investigation. However, we Americans unlike many other countries have rights, and when those rights are violated we seek redress.

Really interesting! I heard somewhere that 95% of the worlds law suits are here in the US. Not sure if that's true, but it seems like it. I think lawyers should sign an oath of ethical behavior that is enforced similar to a Doctor's oath.

The 95% figure isn't entirely accurate, but the reflection and assessment that it might be should be instructive to us all.

As a financial planner I also have to deal with the today standard of the stereotypes of my industry. I find Mr Rutledge's speech an inspiration and call to arms. We need to change our selfs for the greater good of our own industries.
