I ran across my Atari Lynx while organizing my storage room and figured I'd bust it out and shoot a little appreciation video to a powerful, ahead of its time handheld gaming system.
We'll look at the unit, its accessories, gaming boxes, manuals, cartridges and of course, we'll play the games on the device itself so you can see just how amazing it was.
This is a longer video - but I can't do a proper retrospective in 8 minutes. :)

I'm glad this survived the theft a few years ago. Thanks for sharing Shane! It feels like a new RGR episode!

The Atari Jaguar killed this. They should've focus on their handheld progress

The sun protector has an interesting origin. Atari donated at least 100 units to soldiers of Desert Storm. They loved them but the biggest complaint was visibility of the screen in the sun. So Atari designed the sun protector. I use the sun protector and prefer to use it. I was tempted to replace the screen with a modern one but prefer the original screen. That is how it was back then, so...lol the sun protector does help keep the screen darker thereby helping to retain the color and brightness.

Now that you mention it I sort of remember that story. Shame I didn't remember for the video.

I’m not a Lynx super fan but I did buy one when the Lynx II released and many of the games back in the 90’s & most are still CIB. I did have 2 of my Atari Lynx console screens upgraded to the McWill screens and that may sound sacrilegious to remove the screens but in one case the screen had so many pixels that were not functioning properly that it really distracted during gameplay. But it must be said that the McWill screen mod makes all my Lynx games a whole new experience, seriously it’s that good! Note: Lynx is a powerful piece of hardware that had rotation and scaling of which many of the consoles didn’t even have, so cool! Edit: The reason for the ability to turn off the screen was to conserve battery life while game was paused. Yes that’s the actual reason as I recall back then and also I believe it’s stated in the manual

I am definitely considering a screen upgrade ...

@@DarkuniCheck out some of the Lynx McWill screen mod vids out there. It will give you an idea of what to expect and it’s simply fantastic. With that said my Analogue Pocket with Lynx adapter sort of makes the McWill screen mod unnecessary unless you don’t have one or you just want to play on original Lynx hardware. Regardless the McWill screen mod on the Atari Lynx is incredible

@@dwightdixon8508 Yeah, there is magic of using OG hardware. Thing is - and probably why I haven't changed the screen yet - is that the crappy screen is part of the nostalgia. It takes some of the magic away. If anything I would want a means to convert the proprietary power adapter into USB-C PD or something...

I had the first model as a kid, loved playing slime world and stun runner. Battery life sucked though.
