I use OBS with the original ATEM Mini. The delay audio was 250 milliseconds. It took me about five sample videos to get audio/video to sync. I look forward to day I upgrade to the PRO and eliminate OBS.

I really wish the ATEM Mini and ATEM Mini Pro has a headphone jack. It would be easier to adjust the audio levels if you could actually hear the output from the ATEM. I was hosting a Google Meet over the weekend and playing a video off of a BMD HyperDeck Studio Mini. The people on the Meet were complaining that the audio was too loud. From the ATEM Software, the audio meters were showing fine levels. Might just be Google Meet, but if you're live streaming to RU-vid, Facebook, Twitch, custom RTSP or through a re-stream, it would be nice to know for sure.
@@RyanKnowsNothing Alex Pettitt explained 2 work arounds. Basically, feeding a laptop to use that headphone out or feeding a monitor that has a headphone out.
This is a common issue with lots of the prosumer cameras these days too (ie Sony a6400, awesome RU-vid camera, no headphone jack). An external HDMI monitor with headphone jack works great! I got a cheap Neewer 5.5" Monitor and the audio quality is great.

A change of 3 dB is accepted as the smallest difference in level that is easily heard by most listeners listening to speech or music. It is a slight increase or decrease in volume. To me that seems to be a relevant amount of change for every time you press the up or down button for the volume... Other than that, I learned a lot from your video and enjoyed it very much. Thank you for sharing!
Oh I’m with you. It is acceptable for sure. Where it deviates from what I usually have available to me as a broadcast audio engineer is the ability to fine tune the levels. On a normal broadcast console, when at Unity you are adjusting in sometimes 0.1db increments to make the levels just right. That’s the only reason I brought it up. I am experimenting with some midi controllers that could possibly allow deeper control of the audio functions. Thanks man!

Additional info: I noticed 4 frames(which isnt terrible or noticeable to average viewers) but if you are a meticulous person, you will notice. So I used audio/video sync test video to be able to get the precise number of frames of delay and it was exactly four frames. If your atem mini output is set to 24fps, 1 frame will be 41.67ms delay. So for 4frames, you need -167ms delay to correct the sync isse. This can be corrected in OBS with the offset sync in audio advanced setting. If you are not using OBS and you don't have the money for expensive mixers with delay functions, you can pick up a Beringher Shark FBQ 100 feedback destroyer on amazon for $120. It has a delay feature. And delay your audio from there before inputting it into the atem and you are good to go. I personally prefer the Atem Mini to the Atem Mini Pro because I like the fact that I can record my HDMI out to my external monitor with gives me a prores file than the very highly compressed file of the USB C of the pro. Also on the pro version u cant be recording to the Usb C disk and be connected to your system with the chord at thesame time. Just doesn't work. Multiview is good but it is not as important to me as been able to record my files in prores on a recorder monitor. I already have my hack around multiview on the Atem mini. For $300 less, I very much prefer the Atem mini to the pro
That is great info! Especially the OBS hack! I’ve used OBS in the past, but that is what I like about the pro...built in encoder for streaming! That’s a big one for me because the hardware can take care of the streaming and I don’t have to bog down my old laptop with extra software in the background. But hey, to each his own, right? Awesome man! Glad you found that. @alexpettitt had a similar video where he shared how he ran a video podcast for some friends. He had a dual 1/4” to single 1/8” cable and ran it into one of his Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4ks and brought just that audio to the broadcast. As long as you can get audio to one of your cameras it shouldn’t be delayed at all. The delay only comes through the mic inputs. Thanks again for watching the video! Good luck on getting the Pro!

Oh, and I'll try to look into mixing a live band. It shouldn't be that hard now that the delay thing is fixed. Just come off of a mixer with a dual XLR or 1/4" to 1/8" input on the ATEM mini/pro and make sure it's on line level. Maybe have the drummer hit the snare a couple of times to get the delay time, delay it, and you're good to go!
The reason why the knobs are turned left and right is to prevent mouse lift when in live broadcast. There's more real estate on a monitor to drag the mouse width wise compared to height wise. Also, another good reason why you would want to split an audio channel to be separate is when you have a preamp connected to your camera like most sony's and lumix hardware. If you have the XLR device say for the lumix cameras, you'll want to control those separately if they are on two different people in the shot.

It's a real shame they didn't add the sidechain trigger feature on the Compressor and gate from the Davinci Resolve Fairlight mixer, then you could do some useful ducking of audio channels such as music or ambient/room mics with the compressor or gate when using the mic inputs. Could be really useful when live streaming from a venue or pubic space.
What I do to fix the audio delay is I use a Zoom H8 and connect the Lakato wireless stereo guitar system into it, then plug the Lakato receiver into camera 1. Turn off audio follows video, set the first camera to use the mic / line in input, turn off the audio on the ATEM for the other three cameras. I record acoustic piano recordings with generally one vocal (usually speaking) so I can place the Zoom six to eight feet from the piano, have the speaker stand in front of the zoom, and the recording is quite impressive. If I have the option, I can take a microphone and plug it directly into the zoom if that is an option (in this case, I will usually place the zoom inside the piano to reduce room noise). It is a bizarre oversight that they don't delay the audio and Im not sure this is firmware fixable, but just use the camera's audio input and problem is solved, no syncing necessary.

Re the issue with delay on audio... If you run your mix from a board into the camera first (stereo in) and then take the hdmi from the camera into the ATEM it should give you perfectly synced audio to video without needing to use a delay on the board.
Very true. I think I mentioned that briefly, especially in the part 2 video of "All things Audio" but I wanted to give an alternative for those people like me, who have a Blackmagic Original Pocket Cinema camera and the audio input just plain sucks. Thanks Bob!

WOW! Great teaching, master Ryan! As an audio hobbyist, I knew how the EQ works, but had no idea how to set it up well. I've never had a compressor on a mixer before except for a single control. Never setup for broadcast before this year. Can't get the present/boss lady to sit still for a good long sound check to get this stuff right (by guessing, which I hate). IOU! Cheers, Jon
Thanks Jon! Yeah, those are the worst situations. Usually when I am mixing a broadcast I set the channel to that starting point and then I have the luxury of making subtle tweaks throughout because I am just concentrating on audio. What you use is a small cheap unbalanced behringer mixer that you feed your stuff in to. To that mixer you feed your stuff daws everything. Make sure you pan the left and right channel hard in the audiosettings of the atem mini
Probably any mixer with an unbalanced output would work. What brands that are good value for money is based on personal taste these days I guess. The problem is how do you monitor the audio using your studio monitors with any of the minis so I am having a hard time trying to understand what use there is for fairlight. Without good monitoring there is no way you can be sure it sounds good after changing settings in the fairlight software mixer. And no headphones wont do it if you want to be sure it works good with all the different stuff people watch with.
I always wondered why the volume up / down buttons seem to be the wrong way around (for cultures who read left to right). Standard is down is to the left, up to the right. This is a standard on most equipment. Accordingly it's not as intuitive for what would be BMD's biggest consumer of their products. What do others think?
Hey Ryan, great video and thanks for the very informative deep dive into audio on the ATEM Mini Pro. We did a live stream today and I could not figure out how to prevent audio feedback due to the need to both stream vision from the ATEM to FB but at the same time, send the HDMI output to a big screen for the live audience and amplify audio for them to hear. I feel there is a simple solution but I'm still trying to figure it out. Hoping you can help!
Regarding the movement of the knobs in the gui. It's based on real life. You don't push a rotary knob up and down you twist it to the left or the right. Conversely with a straight fader you don't move it left or right you would push it up or down.
That is very true! It seems like 99% of other audio GUIs or DAWs you move up and down to adjust the parameters. I am so used to that, that it’s always a bit odd when I encounter a GUI that operates differently. Maybe I’m just going crazy! Thanks for the comment and the insight!
@@RyanKnowsNothing I totally understand where you are coming from. I think it is the inconsistency between interfaces that causes the issue. I know in some other software you do push it up and down instead of left and right and in some you can do both. Still they say variety is the spice of life :)
Is it a good option not to connect your audio interface to to audio inputs of the Item, but instead select the audio interface as an audio source in OBS?
Hey Ryan thanks for the video. I've been using the pro for about a year now but, due to church renovation, had occasion to reconfigure our setup. What I wanted to do was to connect the mixer output from the choir loft into mic 2 and the output from the "house" mixer into mic 1. What I discovered, unless I've got a hardware issue or erroneous setup, is that you can't mix mic 1 & 2 within the Atem Mini Pro. I can't find any documentation the proves or disproves this.
As an audio pro, please do another video about the fact that the audio inputs are unbalanced, and what happens to your audio if you plug a device with a balanced output (say, a mixer aux out) into the ATEM mini pro audio inputs directly.
The short answer is: Nothing strange happens. What happens when you connect a balanced peace of equipment to an unbalanced peace of equipment is that it simply turns out to an unbalanced connection. Both ends of the cable(connection) have to have the balancing/unbalancing transformer etc in place. As long as you use the right 2x xlr to 1x stereo mini jack cable it will be ok. That is when you put the stereo mini jack in a stereo mini jack input. In the xlr plugs of the cable only one of the signal pins is connected or is shorted with signal 2 so there simply is no balancing going on that has to be unbalanced. Balancing is a very ingenious yet simple system to prevent outside electrical interference that hits the cable, to cause disturbances in The Force. As long as the unbalanced connection has a short cable and not really next to or on other electrical equipment, it will be all be ok. I saw once a guy putting two 15 meter xlr cables and at the end he connected the xlr to mini-jack cable. He said he only uses a short xlr to mini-jack cable so the most of the cable is balanced. I really thought he was pulling my leg but he was dead serious. Oh my god. There are so many people who do not understand balancing and talk like they do, it is unbelievable. Especially on RU-vid :) Do not mix this balancing thought with "out of phase" connection. That is something completely different.

Theoretically it should be possible with that mono XLR Female to 3.5mm. The thing to look out for is that the SM7B is a fairly low gain mic, meaning you have to crank the preamp to get a good level, and that ends up cranking the noise floor as well. Look into getting a Cloudlifter CL-1. it boosts the signal before the preamp so you get a really clean, strong sound out of the preamp. Amazon has them for about $150: amzn.to/2XrpKKN

I'm a bit late to the game here but man, I'm using capture cards, dongles, adapters and I feel like I'm really stressing out my laptop. I need a way to switch between a TalkBack mic and the mics on my kit so the line inputs on the back would be ideal!
Hey, for an all things audio post I would have expected some info on cabling. If I missed it, sorry, long video. Given the "audio split" showed two tracks (L/R) per Mic input I am guessing these 1/8" jacks are stereo unbalanced rather than mini-TRS balanced mono inputs? So 4 mic preamps total (2 per input)? You mention using digital mixer delay to fix sync between analog and digital (hdmi) inputs. What about using an hdmi audio embedder and then using an HDMI input for your external audio rather than the analog inputs? I'm guessing the sync there will be better if you can spare an HDMI port. It certainly should be cheaper than needing to buy an audio mixer with built-in delay function I would think. Downside might be is more conversions as I am guessing all the digital audio inputs are converted to analog for mixing in the Atem Mini before re-encoding for output? Or is it a digital mixer with digital-digital encoding on output?
Much thanks for this great 2-part video, much much appreciated! Now: How do you suggest one go about monitoring, since you wisely recommend trusting one's ears? I ask because since there is no headphone/line out, I am listening to the audio sent out via HDMI to my DELL monitor (and then listening via the headphone jack on that). And what I am finding there is that I cannot trust the up-to-8-frame-delay feature: when things sound good on the monitor out (DELL monitor), they record with delay, i.e. the camera and lapel mic are out of synch by, say, 5 frames. So how can one trust what one hears, and where does one hear it? Also, the way it seems, the only way to check synch is to record to an external drive and open that file in VLC or another media player and see if audio and picture are in synch... this is very cumbersome. If audio monitoring could be trusted, it owuld be great... so is it? And where/how?
I use an audio extractor from Best Buy that spits out a line level signal. Then I plug it into the line level input of a cheap mixer I have. Another way I’ve done it is by using a home audio receiver with HDMI inputs. I know it’s not normal, but I had it in my studio.
Absolutely. And that is definitely the easiest way to do it. But it still kind of renders those inputs a useless waste of space. I’m working on a video that goes over that and a couple other methods to get past the delay issue. Thanks for checking out the video!

The 3 more interesting parts for me have been audio splitting, switch between mic and line inputs and audio delay. Most of the people is more from video and treat as deep as you the audio things for these units. I still didn't decide from mini or mini pro... What a doubt! I have some questions I would like to share with you and your audience. First: If we enter to any atem mini or mini pro from a mixer that has XLR outputs how should be bought or soldered the connectors? I think Atems mini mic inputs are TRRS in which contacts are from tip to sleeve inL is tip - inR is ring 1- ground is ring 2 - mono input is sleeve (remember that XLR1 is ground, 2 is signal, 3 is invert signal). if the atem mini input is balanced audio it'l be signal is tip, invert signal is ring and sleeve is ground... Second: I was wondering if it could be used atems mini as usb streaming, with OBS or any other stream app or directly to RU-vid or any other live video platform, I could use my digital mixer as an interface and get the audio inside de computer directly from there. Third and the most difficult one: I know it can be used atems mini by usb for online meetings or classes but what about using atem mini pro as a direct streamer to the internet router, be able to use it for those meetings with a external mixer? I would like for example to plug my ipad for the zoom class as HDMI input but also divide audio inputs and outputs to the mixer to make outside the box the multiplex connection with zoom class. How do you or any of your audience would do that? I guess I'd need a splitter from lightning to hdmi and other lightning and then an audio splitting from input and output and then plug the audio output of the ipad to a one mixer channel and to the ipad send all except that audio input from an auxiliary output from the mixer? Hi Juan! Thanks for checking out the video! That is one of the more interesting things I found was that you could actually switch between mic and line on the inputs! First Answer: Usually a TRRS is for a headphone plus microphone into a device that supports that. I would hazard a guess that these are Stereo TRS connections on the inside as it has no headphone functionality, but is a stereo (line) or balanced (mic) input. Alex Pettit has a cable he uses, but here is an XLR version I found that looks pretty good on Amazon: amzn.to/3cZY9FH Second Answer: On the original you have to go into something like OBS or a separate streaming box to get to RU-vid. With the Pro you can stream direct or through OBS or straight to RU-vid from the Ethernet jack. OBS is actually a great way to sync the audio from an external mixer with your stream because OBS has a delay function. I'm working on a video that will go more in depth with this. Third Answer: If I am understanding you correctly, you want to split the audio from you HDMI Zoom feed? There are ways to do that. I found a box that will extract the audio from you over an unbalanced signal that you could feed to your mixer, and it will split the HDMI so you could run to an external monitor and also the ATEM Mini: amzn.to/3ebHkb6. I think the ATEM Mini and the Pro would have to be plugged into your computer via USB to be used with Zoom, Skype, Teams and other meeting services. You might be able to do a round-a-bout setup in OBS, but I haven't delved that far into it. Hopefully that helped a little bit! Thanks for the questions and good luck!

I'm a little late to the show here. Great info!. I just bought one of these for my wife's youtube Channel. I have a Zoom Podtrack P8 for audio capture so I'll be running out of that into the ATEM. Does the ATEM store the most recent settings or will it need to be setup again each time? We are planning on recording straight to disk via the USB C and won't have a computer hooked up unless we are live streaming. At least that is the plan for now.
The lack of XLR inputs on the device kills it for me. Or even quarter inch. Or adat. adat would be great, to go directly from my preamp and audio interface digitally.
Yeah, I get it. I hope they release a larger unit with adat or XLR in the future, even if it's more expensive. I'd buy that, even if it was a grand, because it would solve all of my issues with one device. Their web presenter unit is limited to 720p, and if I understand their broadcast units correctly, they don't provide livestreaming capabilities, so I would have to get a third party device to use with those to stream the output in 1080 or 4k. This unit has almost everything I want in one unit, except for proper pro audio. I guess I could use adapters or cables to go from My Scarlett 18i20 XLR/quarter inch to the mini, but it seems jank to do that. Especially if in the future they were to offer something with adat.
@@grateful4068 agreed. I use the ATEM extreme and come out of an X32. I’m looking into audio embedder options, ideally all across AES or SPDIF onto HDMI. I never use all 8 on the mini so have capacity. Just need to find a suitable embedder...
Thanks for this video! I have noticed that you're using Protools as your DAW, It will be quite helpful to make a tutorial that guide us how to measure the delay time between the audio and the video and then sync them using a delay plugin in Protools MasterTrack for example, I haven't seen a video like that in youtube and I think it will be quite useful for a lot o people :)
I’ll will definitely look into that. I use Pro Tools for most of my work other than these RU-vid videos. The workflow is usually a bit quicker in Resolve just using their audio engine. Thanks for the video suggestion! I’ll see what I can come up with!
Hello! Excuse me for my english. I still didn't even decided yet for buying Atem mini or mini pro, but I guess you can meassure it first of all recording yourself clapping one time with the computer through any of both atems as a web cam by usb input with the audio plugged in the mic inputs as line inputs and then import that video to pro tools and selecting from the first transient of that clap to the first frame of the clap in the video. In that way you I think you'll be able to see how much pro tools time indicators say is between. You should measure all the frame rates because it may vary depending on the frame rate you record, but I'm not sure. As you encrease frame rate it may be bigger the delay between audio and video, but this is all theoretical.
With Pro Tools on a Mac, you can technically set the Audio Engine to the ATEM Pro as HDMI options will show up there. Then you can play the output of Pro Tools over your stream.

Really appreciated if you could provide more content on sharing your expertise and experience with us. And definitely would be great you could test out the combination of the atem mini/pro with the rodecaster pro (and maybe dealing with any delay issues related to it). Would it be feasible to use one of the HDMI Inputs at the Atem to feed in the rodecaster pro output getting rid of the delay issue (in terms of having the same HDMI delay or is the delay more related to the transfer of data for the video signal)?
Thanks for the kind words! I’ve gotten a couple of requests about the Rodecaster Pro. I’ll have to look into it and see. I do have a video I’m working on now addressing the delay and a couple of ways to compensate for it. From what I’ve been seeing it can be equipment specific. So the Rodecaster Pro might have a different delay time to lest say an analog mixer, just depending on how much processing is going on in the Rodecaster Pro and the analog/digital conversion.
Thanks man! I appreciate that! The timestamps are automatic. If you place them in your description RU-vid scans it and places them in the timeline. It's been able to see them for awhile as a timecode marker, but only recently has it put breaks actually on the GUI. The key to this though, is that you have to put a 00:00 as the first timecode to have a start or intro point. Try it out! It's pretty dope.
I think you muddied up that whole delay thing? Delay comes from HDMI - so you have to take your sound from the Mic in - either directly or through a mixer with no delay. Is that the first principle?
Hey John! Sorry for the delayed response. Yes, the delay comes from the HDMI, so the audio is arriving at the program feed first. So ideally you want to delay the audio the same amount as the HDMI delay. At the time I filmed this there wasn’t a way to do that yet. Luckily that has changed. Thanks for the comment, John! You mentioned listening to the audio.. but how are you listening. There isn’t a headphone jack on this thing to monitor the audio? Are monitoring the live feed? Through your program monitor?? Is there a jack that I missed somewhere?? Seems like a simple thing I can’t believe is not a part of a $600 piece of equipment.
I was monitoring through a tv with a headphone out. Yes, it’s unfortunate they didn’t include a headphone jack. I ended up buying an audio extractor for $45-50 from Best Buy.
Which in your opinion would produce better audio for a full band live music stream? 1. Audio from X32 into ATEM mini pro, 2. Using ATEM mini in OBS and selecting the custom audio option when choosing ATEM mini pro as a webcam, 3. Using the ATEM mini pro as an audio input device in OBS and 4. Not using ATEM mini pro for a full live band concert live stream for audio?
Definitely mix the band on the X32, bring it into the ATEM Mini, and in OBS delay the audio. I know there’s a way to do it, just can’t remember off the top of my head.
Great video, simple to follow, but advanced information. Question, anyone got suggestions on cable to use from audio mixer (PA desk) into ATEM Mini? I think I need balanced XLR to mono on both L and R mini jack…. Not easy to find.
Great ViD! Good to have a sound engineer's full run-through on the Atem's features. A few questions; can I internally sidechain the comp on say HDMI inp 1 from the analog 1 input? Am I able to plug in a stereo source into audio inp 1, and a mono source into audio inp 2? Working with a producer who has this, and encountered some odd behavior; depending on panning, the audio from jack one will appear on the mixer channel for jack 2, despite no source plugged into jack 2.
Hey Jesse! Thanks for the kind words. It was definitely something that needed to be addressed. Unfortunately there isn't a sidechain option that I can see. That'd be cool if there was. Yes you can plug a mono source into one, and a stereo into the other. All the inputs are technically unbalanced stereo inputs, but in the software you can split the channels so each side of the stereo input acts as a single mono input, which lets you pan each side to the center. That's a weird thing happening with the sources being switched. I wonder if something is up with the ATEM. Thanks man! Hope this helps!
yes agreed, +1 for an audio guy doing tutorials on video equipment. for some reason we do it just that bit better cuz audio is thankfully still a dark art. now, my question, any info on controlling the fairlight page faders with a MIDI keyboard over HUI or mackie protocols ?? My Arturia keylab keyboard controls all the fades n Logic Pro and Ableton Live 10, but what about ATEM ?
Thanks Adrian! It is a dark art indeed because people just want to shoot video and don't care about the audio side of things too much until it bites them in the butt. As far as the midi control thing, I have been looking into this and theoretically it should be able to accept midi control commands for the audio faders in the fairlight page. We had a subscriber share a video that had him using his Behringer control surface with the ATEM a while ago. But unfortunately I don't have a midi controller to test it with. Hopefully I can figure this out soon and put up a video. Thanks again! Hope all is going well.
Excellent video, thanks for the very informative overview of the sound capabilities. I have ordered, an ATEM mini, but may upgrade before delivery to the pro. I want to live stream a demonstrations from my Woodturning workshop and thought this would be a great device to use as a one man band. Would you recommend an external audio interface for a MacBook Pro or is the audio delay too insignificant to worry about. Also what mic would you recommend. Thanks again for the in depth video
I would recommend you go with a wireless lav mic as it sounds like you’ll be moving quite a bit with your demonstrations. This will allow you to also plug directly into your camera which negates the need for an audio interface and keeps the audio in sync with the video. Check out the Rode Wireless Go ($200) and Lav Mic Go ($100). Not very expensive and it sounds pretty good. That’s what I’ve been using in conjunction with a shotgun mic.
