Honestly, the show needs to be 30mins longer. Otherwise when you have a long presentation at the start like there was in this episode it only really leaves time for about 2 or 3 decent length calls.

Anything you assess is something that is impossible to sit on the fence about because regardless of the answer or which way the information points or how much information we have, we never have it all and it always points in one direction or the other direction.

Unless Fátima has its own sun, that "miracle" should have been seen at all around the world (except, of course, where it was night or cloudy). Assuming that that miracle really happened, didn't God have anything more useful to do to prove his existence instead of just moving the sun? Just asking...

sure, scientists still have not figured out everything about the origin of this universe, or what was before, or if it makes sense to think of a before, or what is the totality of all that exists, etc. That being conceded, I fail to see what your point is. Let's imagine that EVERYTHING we know about the origin of the universe is showed to be false; how would that make the miracle of the Sun (or any other supernatural claim) any more real? What would that prove?

Questions I wish they had asked Jacob: 1: WHY does non-belief merit eternal torment in hell? 2: How do we go about figuring out the natural world? Why didn't Isaac Newton (who was devoutly, even fanatically, religious) consult the bible to explain gravity or the motion of the planets?

The TV thing would be quite convincing, especially if some of the sets that came on were sets that normally wouldn't function, say for example they weren't plugged in, or key components in them had failed and these failures had been diagnosed by an electronic technician prior to the event, or they came on during a power outage when no other electronic or electric device could

Also about the absence of evidence: scientifically it's never evidence of absence. There's just no reason to accept ANY claim when given no evidence for it. That it might be possible is not a reason. There are countless impossible claims that have no evidence against them either. If you want to know whether what you think is true, evidence is the only way.

So some stories in the Bible are partially supported by non-biblical sources and some details can be shown to be likely made up, presumably to add drama to the stories. Today I lost my mobile phone, then after looking around my house, I found it under a magazine. Is that a miracle? By the way, I've got a pet tadpole in a bowl. I put a rock in the bowl to add interest. If I blow gently on the surface of the water, the tadpole quickly hides under the rock and won't come out for several minutes. It is obviously conscious of it's environment and experiences fear and intelligence. I don't think it worships me.

That was a great caller. I like to use the phrase gnostic and agnostic atheist, as some people think weak atheist means apologetic which it does not. I consider myself an agnostic atheist that thinks its highly unlikely that a religion invented by humans with no evidence happened to guess something so outlandish in such a primitive time and was insanely lucky and got it right.

That would be the point of holding an undertone basis of agnosticism, that is remaining humble and open to the possibility of being wrong in spite of all we know. But we can know things to a high degree of likelihood to inform beliefs and expectations. If we couldnt assess this then it would be impossible to function because there would be no difference between leaving your house by the front door or the window on the third floor.

This is a point of confusion for a lot of people because the only thing that makes you not an atheist is to be a theist. To believe it makes you a theist To not believe it makes you an atheist To not believe it but non not believe it still makes you an atheist You dont believe because you dont know. not knowing is still not believing.

Pragmatism has an answer for this religion vs science discourse. There is no point in asking whether a religion, or even a science, represents reality, either mental reality or physical reality, accurately. For pragmatists, not only a bad question, but the root of much wasted philosophical energy. The right question to ask is, "For what purposes would it be useful to hold that religion and or science?" :)

It is the most juvenile response to the most simple of questions. It just shocks me how it is so accommodated in society when it comes to religion, claiming the same sorts of things in any other area of discourse people would be laughed at and told to seek mental help. Maddeningly annoying is an understatement.

@thewayofthecookie - It means that you can't have an official state church, like Britain does. It means the government cannot prohibit any religion from being practiced (except to the extent it is clearly harmful to the lives of others), cannot require that any public office holder be subject to any religious test, and cannot promote particular religions.

For everything to be expanding away from each other, there would have needed to be an origin point somewhere. Its a very reasonable assumption. Where matter comes from is another question, one that does not have any answers YET. The Big Bang need not rely on where matter comes from, we do not concern ourselves with things that cannot be proven through evidence.

Studying astrophysics here. His claim that Inflation has no evidence is outrageous and wrong. Inflation makes predictions that have been confirmed by WMAP to within several decimal places, predictions about the isotropy and angular correlation, and prediction about primordial abundance of elements that has been confirmed to within less than a percent.

I have seen as many arguments as possible from both sides but have seen undeniable repetition of evidential science, and rational views of the origins of religion, against institutions struggling to bend their ancient dogma to match reality. Empirical means (essentially) to know. Agnosticism means unable to know or unable to know until we have more knowledge. Though i can see you interpret that to mean we cant know until we have more knowledge, you seem to be missing the fact that no matter how much knowledge we do have, that statement can still be made. Thus the meaning becomes we can only know, when we know everything, which we cant know.

"it relies on a extraordinary experience which is the extraordinary evidence" - That is incorrect. It makes no difference how extraordinary a personal experience is, it remains "personal" by definition and therefore cannot be verified by another person. That immediately makes it insufficient as "evidence" no matter how extraordinary you may think it is.

@FoxBatinaHat Adding to your point. Weather has been a conqueror of military forces also, a natural occurrence which has also been claimed to be of a divine intervention. It can be argued that these events that affect these forces are more common than with civilian populations. There are cases in which this would be true, but that doesn't mean a deity picked a side and is the cause of the event. The reality is its more likely you will die of a disease or disaster with a higher exposure to it.

I know im repeating myself here as you havent read my recent posts yet but we can never have 100% knowledge because there are things that if we didnt know then we wouldnt know that we didnt know them and as such we have to keep an undertone of agnosticism no matter the odds as we can never have complete certainty.

Out of these 6,6 million people, about 2 % regulary attend to Sunday services or are active in some other way in church. Most of my friends are either agnostics or atheists, but they're still member of the church. The thing is that everyone born before year 2000 are automatically member of the church. Professor Auguste Meessen of the Institute of Physics, Catholic University of Leuven, stated sun miracles cannot be taken at face value and that the reported observations were optical effects caused by prolonged staring at the sun. Meessen contends that retinal after-images produced after brief periods of sun gazing are a likely cause of the observed dancing effects. Similarly Meessen states that the color changes witnessed were most likely caused by the bleaching of photosensitive retinal cells

What you are describing and the position you are describing it from would suggest that the position we should have about all things is agnosticism regardless of the presence or the absence of evidence. By the way, you know that atheism and theism go to what you believe where as gnosticism and agnosticism go to what you know right? so you can be an agnostic theist or an agnostic atheist.

I read a bumper sticker the other day that read, "God is pro-life!" I stood there a moment and thought to myself, "Why would he give us free will if he wasn't pro-choice?" Are we not suppose to use our free will? And how do we know if God is pro-life or not? Logically it seems like God doesn't have an opinion either way on this issue, I don't think it's covered in any holy rhetoric.

@Redfingers If something has to be qualified to the point where it cannot be shown *not* to exist - not only by having special characteristics preventing detection (say, by putting it millions of miles away) but, in the case of the Christian god, by adding a requirement that it must be believed in *before* it can even be subjectively experienced - then it is perfectly reasonable to take the position that it does not, in fact, exist.

I see the following line of thinking from theists a lot: You have a position on the existence of God(s), therefore you are making a positive claim, therefore you must prove god doesn't exist, I'm going to define god as something that has no possible evidence for it, and absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence. Zing!

The assertion is being made now based on the evidence we have now and can only presently be responded to based on the evidence we have now If the evidence we have now which the belief is built on is insufficient to make the assertion of belief, then not to believe the assertion because there is not evidence to demonstrate it is logical. That which can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence.

@djbiggs174 The other problem I see with your last comment is this: "Christians don't see ourselves as religious" Because it's obviously a generalization. Maybe YOU don't see yourself as religious, but many others do. Dogma is present and there are fundamentalists popping up everywhere, knocking on doors, entering University campuses uninvited, and basically forcing their beliefs on everyone else WITHOUT considering that those beliefs might be wrong with respect to reality and nature.

The way I see it, it doesn't matter whether someone is a "weak" or a "strong" atheist. I mean, why the differentiation of the two when the word "agnostic" essentially means someone who is not fully committed to the atheist position? Apart from judging who is the physically stronger one between two atheists, I don't see why there is a need to use these two adjectives to describe a person's atheistic position.
@stuboy261

The point of it is that if you are willing to continually say that god might be real and we just dont have the knowledge to prove it yet..... then as we can never know everything that becomes something that can be said indefinitely. And as we cant prove a negative we are never allowed (based on your stance) to say that we dont believe, regardless of how much we do know.
@stuboy261
@stuboy261 11 лет назад
Being agnostic is a redundant state because agnostic just means that we cannot know anything to a 100% certainty. i.e. everyone should be agnostic about everything at all times. We can only know something to a high degree of likelihood to inform our beliefs because we can never really know anything. There is no difference between positive atheism and positive a-fairy-ism. It is just a point of contention to theists who dont like the likelihood of their deity to be represented this way.

The point of it is that if you didnt know something then you wouldnt know that you didnt know it and as such you would never be able to say that you know everything. This is where the empiricism part falls down. No matter how much you know there could always be something that you dont know and you dont know that you dont know so you can never get past agnosticism to know something empirically which is why i said it is a contradiction in terms.

I understand what you are saying but a position is taken be it theism, atheism or empirical agnosticism as a result of making an assessment. You cannot determine that your position is neutral regarding it unless you have made an assessment of it. Empirical agnosticism means that an assessment has been made of the knowledge that we have and has determined that we dont have enough knowledge to have a position. The knowledge that we do have would still indicate which is more likely.

Why do we even argue with creationists? They have a doctrinaire adherence to religion, that even evidence cannot counter. Unfortunately Aristotle was right because he said that people value arguments by faith rather than logic.

@buttface112211 no. i am quite familiar with the doppler effect and i was not referring to that at all. the doppler effect is used to prove the universe is expanding, but it does NOT prove that the early inflationary period actually happened. looking back on my notes from astronomy, the reason the inflationary period is believed ny astronomers to have happened is that it is the only model which explains the isotropy problem and the flatness problem.

This is so educational! BTW, there is a video out there that explains the 6000-year-old Earth thing. It's counted out based on things. Anyway, just because some of the history is accurate, it doesn't mean the whole things is true. The Bible is about 1700-years-old, not 2000.
