My GG Grandfather was with 139th Indiana Infantry and was under Thomas and Schofield. Later he was at Franklin and Nashville. He survived war and died at 65 at work.

This makes clear the Confederates were out numbered and sat behind barriers, Sherman found attacking the fortified positions was not effective. But it is hard defending supply lines behind static defenses, Johnson has a single line of supply through rough terrain and smartly retreated when that supply line was about to be lost. Johnson is criticized for not fighting, but why leave trenches and attach fortified positions when you are out numbered, and why 'stand and fight from you trenches' and lose your supply and end up in a Vicksburg situation of complete surrender of the whole army. Atlanta had a lot more supply lines and once they all looked like they were going to be cut Hood did what Johnson was criticized for and not repeat Vicksburg.

( Ibn my country , Brazil, we have a two única americana Colony in South America, founded by shouterns immigrants -family Lee include- after the end the War , Americana Citi and Santa Barbara do Oeste . )

I think the battle of Atlanta is another important battle for the Union, politically. If they hadn't won it or still on-going with the siege, chances are Lincoln would not have won the reelection as the populace are sick of the war and McClellan would want peace with the Confederacy, thus giving them a chance for independence.

Lincoln would have still won election most likely although it would have been very close not to mention while the democrats adopted a peace with the south platform McClellan rejected it as nonsense

Without the victory in Atlanta, Lincoln almost certainly would have lost the election. Indeed, it may have required the whole string of Union victories, Mobile, Atlanta, Shenandoah Valley and Cedar Creek for Lincoln to pull of the most critical election in American history, before 2024. But Atlanta was the most important victory. McClellan did reject the Democratic Party's Peace Platform, after the fall of Atlanta. I am not certain what he would have done if the there was still a stalemate in March 1865. Or how much encouragement the South would have received and the Lincoln's defeat, an election widely seen as a referendum on the war itself. I think the fall of Atlanta was decisive. Holds, the South wins. Falls, the South loses. It was that important.

Basically, Johnson managed to do in Georgia about as well as Lee did in Virginia. Get maneuvered back by an enemy twice as numerous back to the city they were defending. Lee managed to inflict casualties at a 2 to 1 ratio while Johnson was only able to manage a 1 to 1 casualty ratio, which was not too good for the Confederates. But, on the whole, he was doing reasonably well. If President Davis just left things well enough alone, likely by the November 1864 elections, both Grant and Sherman would still be stalled outside of the trenches of Richmond/Petersburg and Atlanta, Lincoln would lose the 1864 Presidential election and the South would have won the war. Replacing Johnson with Hood just snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. While Hood was an excellent commander at the brigade, division and corp levels, as army commander he was no good, because he never saw a proposed attack plan that he didn't like. A classic example of the Peter principle.l Why did the South lose the war? I would put the superiority of Lincoln over Davis as a Presidential war commander pretty high on my list. Major Davis blunders: 1. Attack Fort Sumter. Let the North make the first move. This mistake was probably based on the fear that the North might not attack at all and the South would lose the glory the South would gain by a repulse of a Northern invasion, like the glory the founding fathers gained by the repulse of the British invasion. 2. Not ordering his commanders to not enter Kentucky first, no matter what happened. This caused Kentucky to fight for the Union instead of the Confederacy. Getting Kentucky to join the Confederacy should have been an automatic since the North has to pass through Kentucky to reach rebellious area of the South. What effect did this have? After firing on Fort Sumter, the South just had to hold the core of the South until November 1864, for the Presidential election. That is for 43 months. They successfully did so for 41 months. It is hard to imagine that having Kentucky on their side, and not on the Union side, would have easily gained them an extra two months. 3. Replacing Johnson with Hood.
