I remember when I was a kid in the 60's my grandparents took me twice to the Atlanta Zoo and it always included a trip to the Cyclorama. That was when it would spin around. I always though that it was huge back then. Thanks Jacob for bringing back some good memoriw for me.
The original Cyclorama location near Zoo Atlanta had stadium seats that were positioned on a rotating platform. So the painting itself didn't rotate, the entire floor did. Also, thanks for stopping by :)
I grew up in Inman Park, which is shown in the Cyclorama. My father lived in Grant Park for many years, and got to see the Cyclorama there. There is a display in the museum that is all about Inman Park, and the group of people who worked together to restore the neighborhood. My parents were two of the people in that group, and the neighborhood's logo (which my father designed) is shown over and over again in it. His name is also mentioned on one of the descriptive plagues. The first time it saw it was the first and only time I've ever gotten emotional in a museum.
If you’re still in that area, the Locomotive Texas was used to chase the Locomotive General that was stolen in 1862. The General is a bit north of Atlanta in Kennesaw GA.
We went to the Cyclorama when it was in Grants Park many years ago. We were visiting Gettysburg last month and visited the Cyclorama. We hadn't seen it in many years. We enjoyed it very much. You need to visit Gettysburg and visit both The Cyclorama and the museum. Both are very interesting. The museum is huge! Thanks for showing us The Atlanta Cyclorama Jacob.
Another excellent presentation, thanks. I saw the Cyclorama as a child at the original Atlanta Zoo building. I have never forgotten it. What an experience.
I've lived in Atl. all my life and has a kid we would go there on field trips. at that time the painting till turned.I'm glad its back open I will have to go see it once again and take my kids.
There was one @ Gettysburg, Pa. I remember it. I went on a field trip in Jr. High School. That was 40 + ? years ago. We stopped in Meyersdale, Pa. for a Maple Festival & enjoyed pancakes for breakfast prior to Gettysburg. Was a really nice day. I'm not sure what changes have taken place since then.
Jacob thank you for going here, I have been to the one in Gettysburg, you should go sometime! I love when you go to historical museums/sites, I really hope you go to even more in the future. Sending praise from Chico, Ca.
Oh wow that was super cool! I live in Minnesota & had no idea it was displayed here... I would've Loved to see it. Thanks Jacob that was really cool🙂👍 much love to u & the fam & Safe travels to u Jacob.
That carpetbagger picture wasn't very accurate...no chops, no pith helmet. We all know what a real Carpetbagger looks like! Lol Thanks for another great video.
I went on school feild trips back in 1971, 1972 ,73 ,and they didn't have a revolving floor stadium seating you just walked in at same level as the figures so as being that way you could actually be like you were part of the battle ,I also went with my grandmother one time to see it which mostly was my first visit. That was at Grant park zoo in 1972 .😊 I was had to be about 10 years old then.
At one point in its history they cut out a huge section so it would fit a new venue. This piece was miraculously found and reinserted during this restoration. An excellent article about it was in Smithsonian Magazine a year or so ago.
I saw this years ago when it was by the Atlanta Zoo, glad to see that it has been preserved. I never knew about the Clark Gable figure - fascinating. Thanks to the Mayor that thought it was important to keep this part of history.
Hey Carpetbagger long time no see it's your old fan sorry my old channel got trouble so yeah here I am good job by the way with your museum Tour excellent work
First time I saw this was when I was around 10 years old, in 1975 at Grant Park. Aptly named huh? They used to have a person with a flashlight that was filtered to make it look like a pointer. they would talk about the painting while they pointed things out with this contraption. Later it was modernized. The visitors would sit on a rotating platform, it was all automated and pretty cool. I haven't seen it since they moved it. If you're really into the history thing, you do need to go check out the Gettysburg experience. We were there about 3 months ago. The museum, cyclorama, and battlefield are incredible and awe-inspiring. They have a 25 minute or so long intro movie narrated by Morgan Freeman that tells much of the REAL truth of the Civil War. I was very impressed.
I was there in 2009. It was an awesome experience. My GG Uncle served with the 121st Ohio Volunteer Infantry and fought in the entire Atlanta Campaign, Sherman's March to the sea and invasion of South and North Carolina. He was killed in the Battle Of Bentonville, N.C. His unit was on the left flank of Sherman's Army and ambushed by Joe Johnson's Confederates. By the time Sherman's main army arrived, many Union Soldiers were already dead.
Hey carpetbagger, I highly recomend you visit Andersonville ,Ga. It was a CSA prison camp holding union soldiers. It also has museum with many prison camp things very good museum to visit
It's been a long time since I've been, but when I last went, I believe the viewing area rotated to direct you towards various sections to go along with a presentation recreating the battle. Complete with little spotlights to illuminate the specific points of interest. I don't remember if there was video projected against it when I was there last, though certainly if there was, it'd have been much more primitive than what it looks like on here. Lastly, IIRC, the whole diorama came about because the area towards the bottom of the edge of the painting. had gotten damaged at some point and had to be trimmed off, so the idea came about to build the diorama to recreate the lost parts from the damage. Yes, the painting itself was at least a little bit taller.
That was really cool to see!!! Wish I'd gone there while in Atlanta instead of the Coca Cola Museum. That place wasn't enjoyable, but rather I felt like I was paying $17 for a Coca Cola ad.
On spot Jacob. The Battle of Atlanta and the March to the Sea got Lincoln reelected. Of course they let several thousand soldiers on leave to vote as well. Shermanozt his right hand man in that battle. McPherson was everything a commander should be and more. Civil War buff here.
Did u receive our comment Jacob, over there in the 🇺🇸 ,if u did not, then we just wanted to say good luck with the wrestling match on the 19th, as we grew up watching big daddy and giant haystacks, all our love from us back in 🇬🇧🏴.
Went there as a kid. It was damn well impressive. I am a huge Civil War buff and a defender of history and don't think it should be changed. I challenge any social justice warrior who wants to talk to me about it kindly.
Karin Wait what? Hell no the hell did you get that? Just like any history it shouldn’t be changed. The union won Atlanta and the war. Where did you get that? Also I don’t think we should get rid of Thomas Jefferson and General LEE. We should learn from our past. Also most consumptions about LEE was not true. He never cared about slavery. Slavery only became a thing in the war very late in the game because of ABE.
That's interesting. Seems like there use to be something like that at Stone Mountain Park years ago . Not sure it's still there or not ? It is always sad to me , but it is a part of our history .
I'd like to clear up some of the misconceptions presented in the video. The 'Texas' is one of two locomotives involved in what is famously known as 'The Great Locomotive Chase' in Civil War history. The painting itself never rotated, rather during its prior presentation guests sat on a platform which rotated to focus their view on various sections. The entire painting depicts one crucial point in time during the battle, thus it is inpossible to say who is 'winning'. The earlier repaintings performed at one time affected very small pieces of the overall painting and was done in order to pander to Southern sensibilities rather than depict a huge Southern victory. These were eventually corrected many years ago. The prior presentation focused on explaining the specifics of the battle whereas the current audio-visual presentation focuses on the painting as an artifact, with a fair dose of current political correctness thrown in. Hence the source of much confusion among visitors about the battle itself. There are no black Union soldiers present because Sherman was an avowed racist who specifcally prohibited the use of black combat troops in his army. There was no one overriding battle that decided the fate of Atlanta. The Battle of Atlanta was actually just one of several actions that took place in that struggle. It was not even the last battle for the city, in fact the issue was not decided for several more weeks afterward. Therefore it is a gross exaggeration to say the Battle of Atlanta was a 'major turning point' in the war - the real turning point was the eventual fall of Atlanta. Despite what may have been stated in the earliest advertising for the cyclorama, no one in Georgia ever believed Atlanta was a great victory. That would have been rather foolish considering that Sherman burned Atlanta and then cut a large, unopposed swath of destruction on his way to the coast. Finally, the sole 'bird' depicted in the sky is actually Old Abe, an American bald eagle who was the famous mascot of the Union 8th Wisconsin. His presence is fanciful in two ways - he never was released to soar over the battlefield (he would have simply flown away to freedom) and neither he or the 8th Wisconsin were present in the Atlanta campaign. Incidentally, Abe survived the war to a ripe old age and lives on in the insignia of the 101st Airborne.
What it really meant to be contracted as was was John Long a Yankee was running rir vive president and the paintiing was called, "Logons Battle, " to help with his political campaign, that was the original intent,
You should go to rock city in Gorgia (probably spelt it wrong but whatever) it's a really cool little walk around and is pretty fun they also have a pack which includes ruby falls which is AWESOME and the incline railway also named America's most amazing mile I think but it's pretty boring to be honest
