Here's a quick comparison between the old and new Atomos Shinobi monitors. The new version is thinner, brighter, and has an improved cable position, which is a nice touch. However, I have mixed feelings about it. While the new design has its perks, I'd probably be more satisfied if my Canon C70 were compatible. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any compatibility info online, so testing it out was the only way to find out-leading to some disappointment. And despite the upgrades, the build quality still feels a bit... cheap. Watch as I break down these points and share my honest thoughts on whether the new Shinobi is worth the upgrade.

Atomos confirmed to me that it does *not* work with the R5C. So even though the C isn't in front of the name... it still doesn't work 🙄

Canon support could come with a firmware update, and the II is still a better monitor than the original, so I wouldn't return it, unless you want to buy it again in the near future.

If atomos would have said that to me I potentially would have kept it, instead they said it’s due to a completely different control protocol, and accepted my return, so I think chances are slim

I returned mine until they confirm it’s been fixed. Otherwise you risk going outside of the return window because you’re waiting for them to solve something they haven’t been able to do with any R5C to date (except their demo video? Wtf)

One other thing I liked about the Shinobi II was the PD via USB C to the camera feature. So say your using a V mount rig, you don’t need to use a cable going from the V mount to the camera. The power going into the monitor, will pass through to the camera via USB C. Likewise if you use NPF 970 batteries, you can power the camera via PD with the USB C cable (I use about 4 970 batteries in a full day with this method). Maybe that’s not enough reason to keep it if you can’t use camera control, but something to note at least on how it’s better than the mark 1 (I thought the extra 500 nits was negligible imo).

Ive seen some issues with the recording stopping if you click to view waveforms and other options so-- big firmware update is needed if they wanna sell more units, especially since its not compatible yet with these cameras as you mentioned

On the Atomos website it does not list the Sony FX6 or FX9 as being compatible either, only FX3 and FX30 as they are basically mirrorless stills cameras forced into 'cinema line' bodies and so made by the same people who make the stills cameras. For both Canon and Sony for some reason the mirrorless cameras and cinema cameras are different divisions and not made by the same people. I've had similar problems with gimbals talking to cameras, they seem to communicate way better with mirrorless cameras than they do with cinema cameras. It's weird.

Don't feel bad. The Shinobi II isn't fully compatible with the Sony A7iv. Ima keep it though. Things may change with a future firmware update on Sony's end.

Have you looked at Portkeys monitors? I have the LH5P II hooked up to my a7S III via HDMI. I also have them connected via WiFi, which allows me to control the camera settings, touch-to-focus, and to start/stop recording. And it boasts 2200nits brightness.

I have yes! Haven’t pulled the trigger to try one, I think focus control is only for Sony cameras but the second that becomes available for canon I’ll give it a try.

I bought the Atmos Shinobi two for my a74 and the only thing I can tell is that this device is not operational because it makes my camera freeze and bug. Each time I want to go in slow Mo back and forth, make it bug 😡😡😡

Interesting!! I've read some comments on my channel of Canon users having difficulty on the R5C, but didn't know it affected all the C70 line as well.. Good info! Sorry about your disappointment here...

I haven't been able to get the control features to work on my Sony ZVE10. The screen goes black when entering Control mode. I've been in contact with Atmos and Sony. Sony mentioned that the PC function, when engaged, disables some functions on my camera. If I can't get this resolved, I will be returning it. Bummed

Yeah I have one and it’s not working as far as controls. The only thing that displays accurately is shutter speed and aperture. I have r5c. The monitor is amazing and I will keep it.

Just got one and the display seems really bad? Laggy, heavy ghosting, bad colour and doesn’t look sharp? I’m I expecting too much? Had the SmallHD Action before and it was way better. Unless I had a defective unit.

Returned mine cause it didn’t work with the R5C Went with the Viltrox DCX3 which gave me hdmi/sdi in and out along with the same usb c and npf power options along with their own npf battery With the shinobi ii you only have hdmi in and that’s it lol Image quality was beyond amazing from the shinobi but not worth the trade off A bit too small too

Hi! So the image quality was better on the shinobi ii than the viltrox? I am considering a secondary light monitor and I don't care about hdmi out or sdi. I care about the picture quality on the screen.

Dude I still can't find it anywhere on the website or on BH where I purchased it. Even in the live demo they used the r5c but that's not compatible either. There's lots of others who have experienced the same thing, so yeah I made this so people know before they buy it to save them the hassle.
