On the contrary, there has been a 'fatwa' order vs. Rushdie by Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran since 1989 and he was well aware of it. He let his guard down and this happened. He perfectly knew what he was dealing with, being an Indian Muslim himself.

He's right to say this. This was hours after. There would be no point in not noting that the motivation could have been personal, random, etc. But he then goes on to make the exact point you're making, so why quibble?

When JK Rowling posted about her horror at the attack on Rushdie someone told her she was next. To even defend or support someone accused of blasphemy of Islam can be dangerous. Getting slapped because you pissed Will Smith off is one thing, but Chris Rock doesn't have to look over his shoulder for the rest of his life or live in constant fear over it.

Someone in another post was blaming the trooper that was there for security but it sounded like the managers wanted security to be purposely light and unobtrusive...no bag checks or metal detectors, etc., so the trooper may not have been in a position to intervene immediately. If that's the case we can't really blame him since he would have had to have been literally in between Rushdie and the attacker or within a few feet of them to stop the attack. In many venues someone can rush the stage and be on it in seconds and the speaker, managers and audience don't want security standing right by or in front of the speaker. Without several security people spread out between the crowd and the speaker, security standing right by the speaker or a physical barrier of some sort it's very difficult to stop someone from rushing the stage.
