He was the next big thing in Australian racing. But it all fell apart for gun jockey Jason Maskiell. From the first hit of ice, he was hooked.
Maskiell tested positive for the drug after a race meeting in 2011 and again in 2013.
An 18 month ban was the penalty. It almost sent him to his grave.
It was his grandfather and famed horse trainer Ken Hanson who picked him up by his bootstraps.
Ken had already lost a son - killed in a race fall in the early 80s - he was determined not to lose a grandson too. Fast forward 5 years from that second failed test and Maskiell is back in the saddle.
On Melbourne Cup day this week, he had five rides in Hobart.
Elwick Racecourse is a long way from Flemington - but it's far better than where he could have been.
