How can we look at the speech given by Starmer which (rightly) points at the last 14yrs of immense Tory failure, but whose only prescription for said failings is to offer the very same - more austerity - cure the Tories prescribed for 14yrs?
It didn’t work for Osborne ,it won’t work for Labour. Austerity is a lie . Progressive economists believe that it shrinks the economy thereby making government debt actually bigger as a percentage of GDP which is self defeating .The only limits are high inflation and spooking the money markets ala Truss. We built the NHS and huge amounts of housing after the war when government debt was high. What we need is government investment to grow the economy .
Disappointed in James... we've heard this speech before, coming out of the mouths of David Cameron and George Osbourne. Keir Starmer is as much a Tory as they were. We've heard plans to grow the economy through efficiencies whilst cutting spending, we've heard the "those with the broadest shoulders will take the heaviest burden" - that's almost identical to what George Osbourne said in a speech. We were told 14 years ago that difficult decisions need to be made in order for a brighter future, here we are 14 years later and a Labour government is saying the same things and doing the same things, promising yet again things will be better one day at some indeterminate date. 14 years we have heard the same speech, it's just coming from a red instead of a blue. All Labour are offering is more of the same, more pain, no solutions. I was expecting this prior to the election, but I'd expected you, James, to call it out with Labour just like you did with the Tories.
If everything is broken, it must be put right, otherwise you will get another 14 years of looking after shareholders and the stinking rich . Tory's made great play on the minimum wage, to create a low wage economy with sky high prices . I will be watching like everyone else to see how things go, but I am prepared to give them time . I will also be watching for prosecutions of certain officials who have robbed the public purse .
Not instantly of course 🤪. By the end of a term, more likely to see the direction of travel. By the end of a second, doing great but then get distracted by a war or something.
The view from France. Here the man on the Cherbourg omnibus is as interested in Brexit and Britain's interests as he is in British cuisine ( though haggis has a growing following). You hardly ever hear the French mention Brexit--that boat sailed long ago and when the topic is raised which happens rarely, the attitude is 'they made their bed etc'' and "they blew their chances and what right have they to expect better treatment than other non EU States?'' "and 'if we make concessions to the UK won't all third countries expect them too?' For most Frenchmen the EU is big enough as it is and the concept of letting the UK back in is anathema. What's in it for the EU to reopen a relationship with the UK when Rees -Mogg and others have abolished or mauled so many EU rules and regulations that the UK helped make?. That said, most EU States would be happy for the Erasmus + scheme to be reinstated and find it hard to credit the UK's opposition to bringing back youth exchanges. In short, the French are not averse to some minor tinkering in order to fill gaps or improve perceived shortfalls, but only so far and no further. Travel to France from November with the need for photo id and fingerprinting and the endless queues will make us relive the damage that Messrs Farage, Johnson and Rees-Mogg visited upon us in 2016. And we let them get away with it Scot-free in order to fly by private jet and bank their ill-gotten millions in untouchable tax havens.
The broadest shoulders will hire accountants to avoid it. So this will fall yet again on those who have long disproportionately paid for the Govt. and services - the middle classes. That is by no sane measure “fair”. That said, this conversation should have happened 14 years ago. Cameron was indeed “heir to Blair”, and Brown had really messed up the economy. Shame on the Tories for it being a Labour Govt (a LABOUR GOVERNMENT! - Neil Kinnock voice) that has had to pull on the long trousers. I do not believe for a second that Labour did not know this before the election, but then again who did admit to it? Final note: funny that Labour now says we tighten after it has paid off the public sector. I await next year and see how well they do in controlling expectations.

I really am hopeful. This will take effort on the part of Labour in order to get things back on track. My personal experience has been that the Tories completely obliterated our country. I had to watch from the outside as I was born and lived abroad until 5 years ago, as it consistently got worse. Now that we have Starmer, I truly hope he can do this. His Labour needs to reduce the burden on the working and middle class and raise taxes on the richest in society. Make people’s lives better. 5 years is not long - but I believe that they can fix the country and we can catch up to our European peers. I doubt Brexit will be reversed, but we need to push for rejoining the single market to get rid of the Brexit red tape, and give our economy fuel to grow further, which I hope will be on the table in the near future.
