For me, this movie cemented the fact that Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the finest actors working today. He _becomes_ the person he is portraying. Very well done movie.
@@AdityaSingh-ej7zv tarantino is boring and irrelevant for me after his last two movies...so full of himself yet so depleted...i hope he proves me wrong
@@BeefPapa Me three. I guess its been a while now, but i used to think of Dicaprio as just another 'pretty face' male actor. The dude has good acting chops for sure. Hes an awesome actor.
Hughes literally ended Brewster's career. After this hearing, he convinced a guy to run against him in the primary, bankrolled his campaign, and watched Brewster lose the primary. He never returned to politics after being ousted from the senate.
@@williamrowlett740 so howd that disinfectant injection go willy? cleaned ya up good did it or did ya have to do that light therapy we have been hearing about?
Scorsese is known for many things, but no one talks about how he makes great courtroom scenes. This, Goodfellas, Casino and The Irishman all have great courtroom scenes
@Wes McGee Courtroom hearings and Senate hearings abide by the same set of rules. You can be indicted and sentenced if proven guilty. The only difference is most senate hearings, especially famous ones, are more open to the public. To say this is far from a courtroom is not even close to correct.
uh no sorry, there is only one good courtroom scene and that is in the film "My cousin Vinny". everything else as entertaining as it is accurate compared to my cousin vinny.
@@jon8004 This scene was really good because of the cinematography and editing. Most of them are because of the acting. The screenplay matters but not if the characters aren't believable.
@@jon8004 The shaky leg, swooping camera, angles, camera moving between the masses, the lighting, the black to white transitions even showing his skeleton for a brief moment. These are all cinematography and editing choices which make this scene what it is. If you were trying to make the case for Primal Fear or A Few Good men, then I would agree but not for this film. Robert Richardson is one of the best cinematographers ever.
I sat next to Alan Alda on our way to Beijing in 2003. We were in Business Class. He had the aisle seat, I had the window. We exchanged small talk and I told him how I watched M.A.S.H. growing up. Later I ran into him the next day at the St Regis hotel breakfast. He stopped at my table and in front of the folks I was eating with said, "Good Morning Brad, how'd you sleep." I'll never forget that. There are certain memories I will hold dear forever. I am sure he doesn't remember that, but I do.
Howard Hughes: Now I put the sweat of my life into this thing, I got my reputation all rolled up in it, and I have stated several times that if the Hercules fails to fly, I will leave this country and never come back! And I mean it!
@@Brodyjaxonthe problem with wolf of wall street was Matthew McConaughey. He was in it for 5 mins and killed everyone. Seeing Leo get outclassed like that took away his Oscar
@@cameltanker1286 Sorry bud he didn't stand up to anyone. He started immediately surrounding himself with pro Isreal swamp people and then went along with all the hype during 2020 that allowed his defeat. When we needed a leader he followed.
@@cameltanker1286 Please name one swamp person he prosecuted or even fired that is not currently back working for the government? As far as Israel. Our support of them costs us 3 billion dollars every year and we get very little if nothing valuable in return. The unseen costs are our sour relationships with middle eastern countries simply because of our support for them. This results in higher oil prices which is hard on middle class which hurts us. In fact our foreign aid to all countries needs to stop. I single out Israel because our support of them since 1947 has cost us dearly in dollars and diplomatic relationships. Our nation is broke. It is time we accept that and act accordingly.
77gravity That’s why some attorneys, cops, and soon to be federal judge hates me. Not only do I ask questions, I do it with confidence as though I am a multimillionaire. Lastly, when responding to their questions, I end it in question form.
One of my favorite pictures of all time shows an Apollo astronaut standing on the moon with the Hughes Surveyor 3 moon lander next to him and the Apollo 12 moon lander in the background. The Hughes lander went to the moon first, two years before Apollo. A magnificent accomplishment that is almost totally unknown.
@@TheSgriffith2 The incredible thing is that Pete Conrad was able to land his LM within walking distance of the Surveyor. His first words on the surface of the moon were, "Whoopee! That might have been a small step for Neil but it was a big one for me!"
that scene is fantastic, this is exactly how the world of politics works, it is not about representing the interests of the population, it is about protecting the interests of those who pay the campaign
The film is about a business man getting fucked harder than rape by the mutha fucking government and even by his closest friends. Why the fuck didn't Leo get an award? Read my comment and answer your fucking question. It's all a game and it only gets more funnier the more people it harms.
This is a True story unfortunately there are still many senator Brewster exist todays and lives in pockets of corporate America, however not that many Howard Hughes to fight, imagine if Hughes lost this battle and we would be paying toll on skies
Hughes is badass, guy overcame his OCD temporarily just to put these bastards in their place. Even touching things he'd normally wouldn't touch due to his Germ phobia when putting emphasis on words. Lord knows the guy probably went home scrubbing himself raw after that, but that doesn't make it less badass.
Not saying that his performance in The Revenant isn't Oscar worthy, but for some reason I find DiCaprio's acting much more impressive in his other nominated roles, especially This, Wolf of Wall Street, Django Unchained and Once upon a Time in Hollywood ( Even though he was nominated, I don't think it gets enough praise )
@La Onda All representative democracies can be bough out by special interests. Don't get high and mighty thinking your country is any better in that respect than America.
I don't know if this actually happened or not but I like how in this scene Howard Hughes basically makes a fool out of this Senator. I do know that in reality Hughes did have a Senate Hearing but whether or not it played out the way it does in the film is what I'm uncertain of.
The blocking and using the flashing with the lights was a great choice by Martin Scorsese, using the lights flashing for transitioning between cuts. Also to build tension
The one thing I've always been impressed by is just how talented Leo is in allowing the audience to forget it's him and become immersed in the character and story he's portraying. A great deal of actors break the 4th wall if they go overboard with method or underutilize source material as to remind us constantly that we're watching an actor performing in a film.
"No, I Don't Think I Will!" I Love This Whole Scene! Leo Played Howard To A "T"! What A Beautiful Verbal Boxing Match! Alan's Really Feeling The Heat! I Absolutely Love How Mr Hughes Went From Being The Prosecutor To Being The Accused! He Totally Owned Brewster & Had Him Tripping Over His Own Words! Howard To Brewster:" Catch Me If You Can!"
I love how on day 1 the press are staring down Hughes like he's the devil, waiting to see how he'll respond to the committee's pointed questioning. And by day 3, they're staring down the committee waiting to see what they have to say in the face of Hughes' blistering questioning.
No shit. I was watching this film at a bar a few months ago and i was like damn leo must have gotten the oscar ( I was tipsy since i knew he got the oscar for revenant) But damn
I found this movie boring when I saw it back in the day but rewatched it today and realized it was a good movie. Leo gave an Oscar-worthy performance and Scorsese did a great job👌
"Now if you believe that because of your great wealth and power, you can intimidate any member of this committee, I want to advise you that you're mistaken!" That went strong tbh.
I had always known Hughes' wooden aircraft as the "Spruce Goose," without understanding who coined the term, and that it was meant as an insult. I have, and will, until the day I die, always refer to it, under the name Hughes gave it - the Hercules. I also lived close to where his old factory was, in Culver City. His legacy was always somewhat odd, in the city he worked in. He was known as strange, but not in a derogatory way. OCD, though misunderstood until only recently, was not seen as a " commitable" condition. Hughes was an unqualified genius. Not surprised he was hamstrung by something like OCD.
Brewster's "defence" totally collapsed when he revealed that he knew Trippe and travelled around the World for PAM AM dug his own grave, fantastic by Howard Hughes for doing his homework, (How many times Brewster had been to Trippe's New York office in the last three months, knowledge of Brewster going to Peru on behalf of PAM AM). 😂😂 Brewster early in the film saying to Hughes: "We just beat Germany and Japan," "Who the hell are you?" Senate hearing: Hughes to Brewster: "Do you know who the hell I am, Senator?"
El Fenomeno Plenty of leftists are fine with Neoliberalism - they’re merely interested in being vaguely transgressive by paying lip-service to Marxian ideas, while consooming as much as the average person. Hell, Progressive Leftism wouldn’t even exist if not for 20th century global capital. Marx himself would have detested contemporary Progressivism.
Too bad Leo's vocalization of Hughes wasn't better: Howard had a much deeper voice

Senator Ralph Owen Brewster: All right, this has gone on long enough. Juan Trippe is a great American. His airline has advanced the cause of commercial aviation in this country for decades. Juan Trippe is a patriot. Juan Trippe is not a man who is interested in making money. Howard Howard: Hm. Well, I'm sure his stockholders would be happy to hear that.
This is great. The missing part is watching Juan Tripp in his office watching the hearing end... walking to his globe, pointing at all the places TWA is going to be able to fly and saying to himself "F*CK!"
I just read up on this ,after this confrontation which Hughes won ...he later paid for a challenger to take the Senator’s seat away from him ending the senator’s career. And BTW that lovely senator had connections to the Klan and Joseph McCarthy , now will someone give me a mercy thumbs up for all that history lol !
Hadn't seen this film in a while (2002) but the attention to detail is awesome. Some properly "heavy-weight" acting in this court room scene. Senator Brewster to HH "Its not me Howard, its the US government. We just beat Germany & Japan, who do you think you are?" Another great line - "Do those fellas work for me? Everyone works for you Howard!" A similar film to this for deep character acting is Bridge of Spies with Tom Hanks. Put Tom & Leo together in a film/scene like in the Aviator - and wow, light the blue touch paper & stand well back!
