had one of these when i was a kid in 1998. would pay aaaanything to get a hold of the cassette tape recordings of beats and songs i made with this. hard to believe that this hardware is now considered vintage. amazing
This is so important for young musicians to understand-there’s so much self-understanding and value in revisiting art you made years ago. Good or bad, embarrassing or not-listening to your old music can be a wonderful experience.
I love this brick so much man. The only advantage of memory card is more space but then you get all kinds of limitations like you can't really use time/delay and also pitch doesn't work on stereo samples iirc, so there's no point of getting one for the price of 202. Quick tip - when holding cancel+rec you can set the threshold. Blessings
Yes I have seen that - thanks for the reminder. That makes sense about the memory card as well I think that’s why I didn’t bother in the end cause it didn’t seem worth it. Appreciate the info man. Thanks!
I will surely score one this week I need a cheap sampler for my next show and saw one for sale, I wasn't really into it but I decided to google it a little bit and I'm glad I did ! That low bitrate quality totally fits with the shit I do !
I can see how the 202 can really help to get samples to sit really well together. Specifically finding the right tones for drums to fit with a given sample by using the pitch and filters. Really great video, I didn’t know how useful this machine could be until now
Pretty sure I tried my 303 cards in the 202 and they didn't work. Sure someone explained why once but can't remember off the top of my head sorry mate!
Incredible devices. This thing is basically the physical form of 1 pad on a Maschine mk2 lol. But, also way cooler and intuitive as well as stand alone which is very endearing. I need one badly
Hello, I just bought an SP202 few day ago to get this pitch shifting. I already own an SP303 and the pitch shift is really bad. Can't wait to play with this beauty :)
@@Faceman005 In terms of actually finishing a full track I would definitely use a 404 100% of the time but the 202 is great for adding a lil spice to your sound.
I hate that they removed the pitch effect from the other units. It's the only think holding back the sp404. I have to use my iphone or iPad to change pitch, which adds time on the iPad which i don't like haha i wanna just use the iPad for the sample library. Really hope roland makes another sp. They have to know how well it would sell haha
Yup I have no idea why they let that one go, it was the most useful and powerful FX from that unit that should have been taken forward! I use my DAW too, but I think I could use the P0-33 or MPC 2000xl if I wasn't being lazy!
@@MK-vi2cm you better mutha fuggin believe it i did are you god damn kidding!!!!! 😂😂😂 i preordered 3 of 'em because idk which stores gonna get 'em first 😂 legit my dream came true. I'm dead. Haha
Love the videos. My roomate is a gear head, mostly into harsh noise stuff though. But he had an old Sp202 he picked up for super cheap a bunch of years ago, and he didn't even really know what it was. He was just running random samples into it. Anyway, he gave it to me suuuuuuuuuper cheap. So I got kinda lucky and was able to snag up a 202 for like 50 bucks.
not much. I got an MS-1 and thats a lot easier as you can do the sample grades as a thru fx so you don't actually have to record the samples into it - it saves a lot of time. I have been playing with the 303 a bit recently though!
Thanks! That was really cool, was wondering if you could maybe give us a preview of the reverse function? I read that it works differently to the SP404sx?
@@spvidz It is the size of a cell phone and slightly thicker than an old school gameboy. Very compact if you ask me plus it has a live multimode filter with fat resonance, can downsample your input on the fly and its pitch/scale mode sounds amazing. Well worthy of a lofi tool and cheaper than a 202 !
could i make beats on the sp202 by recording on the pc via an rca cable? using a DAW? I'm from Brazil, it is very difficult to buy any model of sp here, and even more difficult to import through ebay. The sp202 is the only model I found, I loved it, but I'm afraid I need some other equipment besides it and my pc to beat :( thanks bro, your channel is amazing.
you can definitely get sounds from your 202 with an RCA cable yes. The 202 has very limited storage space though and it quite slow to work with. As long as you are ok with that you will be able to use it to get samples though yes!
@@spvidz I am also very slow to work hahaha. The item I found comes with a memory card to improve that space. The old vibe of sp202 enchants me, I think we can get along.
Thats cool man the memory cards are super expensive. The only downside is that I think some of the FX don't work on samples stored on the card. They have to be in the internal memory
How does the pitch on the 202 stack up to the pitch stretch you can get with the PO 33? I’m sure you don’t remember, but I commented on an older vid, and said about how I went to a store to get the 303. I even had the guy call me because I asked him to if they happened to get one in. Anyway when I got there he was helping someone else and then I stumbled onto the PO33. I Bought it, and left before he was even done with the other customers. I was more than happy with my choice, but if the 202 pitch stretch is better then I’m gonna have to check it out.
Not sure between those two id say they are similar but I prefer working on the 202. I’ve not really gotten into the 33 that much yet I think I need to get a case for it and then spend some more time with it!
Total haha, It is longer if you use the different sample rates though - think it goes to about 30 seconds on the lowest rate but that really does alter the sound of the sample you've recorded in
This is interesting, since I have the descendant, SP-404SX. But, I have a suggestion on your vids. I suggest running your VOX audio through RX7 De-click (or similar) to get rid of those mouth clicks (basically tongue & spit noises). They make it hard for me to listen. Keep up the good work on the SP vidz!
Thanks man yeah I’ve noticed it myself but didn’t realise there’s a solution like that. I think I had the mic a lot closer for this video which hasn’t helped. I will look into it getting a plug-in to fix it!
spvidz Sure thing. I edit a lot of Audio-Video and ran into that issue myself. I first took each click out in Pro Tools, then I found a better way. I think iZotope is the best for me. But, Accusonus also has a lot of affordable options for audio repair.
I had one of those when they first came out. didn't really spend much time on it because I bought the Dr 202 as well.I'm kicking myself in the ass cuz I don't know what happened to it, it got away from me somehow but I still have my Dr 202 actually I guess I missed out on a good thing
damn man thats a shame! Its a fun bit of gear although the options with it are quite limited. Mine acts mainly as an 'fx pedal' now to run sounds through for more grit! Cheers for watching
This was the first sampler i ever bought, from a pawn shop and the outputs were shorted out so I returned it bc i had no knowledge of fixing such things at the time. So i got an electribe es1 mk2 on ebay and i don’t regret it
@@spvidz they are all mono. You can Sample stereo but only get a few seconds. but they sound good. Lack a high pass filter other than that I love them. Got some cool features
303 has a lot more options as it’s a big step up from the 202 but the 202 will give you a lot of nice grit and the time stretch which is awesome. It’s a tough choice!
Which one you did up getting? I’m on the same boat. I have a Korg KP3 for touch effects on the go. Have a MPC 100 just want a SP for the extra knob/modulator effects
No I’d stick with the 404sx. It’s a great sampler and a lot easier to get to grips with. I think the 202 is better as an addition to another sampler too due to the memory / restrictions. My main box is the SX and has been for years now
Like spvidz said, keep the 404. I only have the 202 but it is very limited compared to the sp’s that came after the 202(No vinyl sim compressor, limited memory, and no sequencer to name a few) I bought it for the price and i wouldnt say i regret it but just making the most out of it til it bites the dust or i can buy a 404.
You have to be careful with the 202 but I’ve learned some stuff since this video. Driving the signal in harder and having the volume lower helps and I’ve also heard running it on batteries can help. I think it’s something to do with the sockets I’m using in my house
@@spvidz I'm going to try get by on the SP202 for now... I have other samplers like the Polyend Tracker and Akai S2000, so will see how they fit in. I like the performance aspect of the SP boxes. Thanks for the vid!
@@spvidz Yeah, I am in the same boat. I have temporarily stepped away from sample-based hip hop and moved onto synth-based. When you say streaming service, which is why I asked, which ones? I assume you mean like TrackLib or something? I am hunting for options.
If you ever hit up thrift shops.. check the old digital cameras sitting around for memory cards. You can totally luck out and snag one for a few bucks.
Hey man yeah I've read that before. Looking bacl when I was thinking about hunting for one I found out there were some limitations of using the memory card so opted to just stick to the internal memory instead! Do you have a 202?
spvidz it does have it perks.. running long drum loops through it to jam over, saving a project to come back to.. but most importantly.. if you have different chops on those c/d banks.. your polyphony goes monophonic and your sample playing will automatically cut out when the next pad is pressed. Works like an MPC mute group. So much fun to turn gate/loop off, and jam.. you can get some funky stuff going on.
I've got one to play around with for a while during this Corona crisis. In a week or so I'll sell it again and buy another vintage/lofi sampler. If you're interested in buying mine, let me know. I'm from the Netherlands btw.
hey ,am i have a question about the 202 that i dont really know how to put into words in a comment! i know it sounds weird to ask this but do you have an email i can send a video question to?
