What happens when you ask a Spanish gunmaker to make a gun to an exact London spec - this!
The AYA English Game is a custom gun made exclusively for Sportarm. We went up to their store at the West London Shooting Ground to take a look and have a shoot. We were surprised to say the least!

AYA Number 1's tend to balance on the hinge pin, whereas the #53 & #56tend to be a heavier live pigeon gun that balance slightly forward of the hinge pin

I bought a (second hand) AYA #1 at SportArms WL, in fact, as I watched the video, I had to go and get my gun to make sure it wasn't *mine* you were handling (I picked mine early sept, so within a few days of you visiting); I got a round action 30" pretty much identical to the one you handled, save mine is a few years older. I think the guys are Sportarms are awesome to deal with, and the gunroom is just *sick* if you like nice guns, the range of slightly higher grade (to sickly higher grade) toys is just scary. Also, the staff is *very* knowledgeable -- I consider myself a pretty strong amateur of SxS and they didn't miss a bit on details or history. I strongly recommend a visit if you get a chance

I recently bought a mint AYA Model 25 in the Holts auction. As a smaller gent, I absolutely love it. The colour hardening is wonderful and engraving really is very nice. Of course we would all love a fine English gun, but for the money you just cannot fault what AYA do. Not sure how I missed this video, but glad I stumbled across it. Thanks guys.

What are the service pressures and proof pressures for superior and standard steel proved guns in the UK? One of guns had what appeared to be good wood-to-metal fit.

Definitely some beautiful shotguns. I'm torn though, because I can get a VERY nice Grant or Lang, or a good Purdey, Boss, or Holland for that kind of money. I see the benefit of modern proofs and better reliability than a hundred year old gun, but I like holding a piece of history.
@tgsoutdoors
@tgsoutdoors 2 года назад
It’s a hard choice to have to make. A lot of benefits to both camps, this is a great option if you require a peculiar fit and are going to be using a gun hard. The classic route does appeal, however it would be a shame to use a 100 gun to death.
@buserror
@buserror 2 года назад
You can get a much cheaper english/london or slightly more provincial sidelock for a fraction of the price, it will carry the whole history without the price tag, then get a more modern SxS to shoot more serious loads with. I got a few cheaper SxS, all of them with history, pedigree and style that I'm delighted to shoot 26g #6's with -- and I now also have a more modern #1 that is HP proofed. It's still a great gun, future proof, but now I got the choice, and I didn't spend a ton of money on a classic that migth be a doorstop in 5 years if they enforce a lead ban.

Have you ever looked over an offering from Connecticut Shotgun? I’d be interested in you take on them. Just purchased my first sxs from them and it appears to be a quality gun for a decent price point. Started hunting with my dad back in the ‘50’s and 60’s with pumps, moved to a semi and then stopped hunting because of difficulty in find hunting grounds not overrun with untrained yahoo’s. Got into sporting clays 5-6 years ago with a variety of O/U’s and a pump but was always fascinated with the sxs’s my uncles used. The transition wasn’t bad but I haven’t shot it much because of the ammo shortage (my wife shoots with me and she uses a 20 ga. too so to make sure she isn’t short changed I’ve been shooting 12 and 28 ga.)

Those guns scream pure Roger Moore , they certainly raised my eyebrow . Out of my price range at present but makes me want to take out my Spanish Essex and try to dust a few . That’s happening this Wednesday at Catton Hall . Hard plastic pad and running reloaded 26g steel 7 shot through it . Maybe a bruise or two after 100 birds , but I care not 😁

Beautiful gun! You referred to balance point on the hinge pin several times during this video. And it is a common description, if not goal for guns to balance there. But I would submit that isn’t the best way to describe a balance point. Would it not be true that the balance point of a Winchester model 21 would have a weight forward distribution in comparison to a gun with a shorter water table? Should we not then use a more universal balance description point, such as X inches forward of the trigger. The trigger is in static location in relation to our hands. I believe there would be enough to consider to make that its own episode.
@tgsoutdoors
@tgsoutdoors 2 года назад
Interesting concept. The problem there is the hinge to trigger to grip distance can change a huge amount. Certainly a good idea for a video.
@nailbenderMatt
@nailbenderMatt 2 года назад
@@tgsoutdoors My thought is: completely ignore the hinge (as it relates to the balance point). Only refer to balance in relation to trigger as that is a constant that our index finger is consistently positioned similarly to by the vast majority of shooters regardless of straight/Prince of Wales/pistol grips. As well, breach face isn’t a good reference point as a box lock vs side lock has differing distances from our back hand. I would love to hear the response to my theory from a London maker. 🤞🏽

I cannot fathom how the Italians and Spanish can make a gun of that quality when the English have to go abroad,get them made for them and then put their name on them and sell at a 'reasonable" price or else manufacture in England and have to charge a price that a millionaire winces at.😮

Why do you say that it is a gun you have shot? I have never shot a gun , however I have FIRED many. A pheasant,clay pigeon or a rabbit may be shot but a gun is only ever fired. Otherwise the only time a gun is shot is when some idiot takes a low bird and shoots his neighbour on the next peg!
