When you run out of gas over the Atlantic Ocean, your options are pretty limited!
Full Throttle, our Top Gear-inspired series, looks at aircraft and famous flights available to everyone through flight simulators! While we don't have The Stig, we do have a German Shepard test pilot....
Also, FYI, there were only 306 people on board, not 309 like I said - but I did use 306 people at an average weight of 200lbs for the weight calculation! My mistake!

That was pretty impressive. The TBM used by the French military is a whole lot less crazy than the number of Gulfstreams that the US military operate. I tried landing a bush plane ( how unimaginative) on Half Dome and El Capitan. Doesn't work. They are not solid, merely an illusion.

Imagine the terror of those pilots. Your lives and hundreds of others are in your hands. You're in a massive hunk of metal kept afloat only on your air speed, which is now a finite, precious resource. You're landing when gravity decides, not when you decide.

You should try to recreate the gimi glider, a plane that ran out of fuel, and was too far from any active airports, but the pilot knew about a former airport in the area. As they prepared for landing, they realized they were too high up. If they continued with the decent like usual, they would overshoot. If they dove, they would pick up too much speed and not slow down in time. So the pilot entered a side slip, a manure glider pilots sometimes did to decend quickly while maintaining a lower airspeed. He had never done it in a glider, but he pulled it off in a fully loaded aircraft.

I managed to do that landing in a full A320 cockpit recreation. It was a long and scary descent to the runway. but guess what. We arrived to high and too fast. Still managed to land it fine. I have all the respect for the Pilot and copilot of that flight.
