The B-52's - 52 Girls
Recorded Live: 11/7/1980 - Capitol Theatre - Passaic, NJ
More The B-52's at Music Vault: www.musicvault.com
Subscribe to Music Vault on RU-vid: goo.gl/DUzpUF
Personnel:
Fred Schneider - vocals, keyboards, glockenspiel, various toys
Cindy Wilson - vocals, percussion
Ricky Wilson - guitar
Kate Pierson - vocals, keyboards, bass
Keith Strickland - drums
Summary:
This is a terrific document of the group shortly after the 2nd album release. They play the 2nd album in it's entirety as well as most of the first album. It's b&w, but well lit, good audio and every second of it is here. The original lineup (they look so young!) bursting with creativity on their first tour as headliners.

Kind of sad they lost their original sound so early. They had it in the first 2 albums but as soon as they got famous they were told "Move to New York, nobody could work in Athens" so they did and both Keith and either Fred or Cindy have since said "That was terrible advice." Why? Their whole sound was BASED in Athens! As soon as they left, there came Mesopotamia (which wasn't half bad) and Whammy (which, let's face it, isn't the original sound at all though it has elements.) Bouncing Off The Satellites is OK but the original sound is nearly completely dead at that point; Ricky was dying of AIDS while he was recording it. Ricky was integral to the band's original sound, he and Keith played music for years before the formation of The B-52s. You know what else? Ricky may have not died in 1985 if they hadn't moved to New York. I somehow feel as though he didn't catch AIDS until 1979-1980 or 1981.

Definitely. One must realize what the music scene was like in 1980 Billboard hot 100 : All Out of Love by Air Supply Still by Commodores We Don't Talk by Cliff Richard. It's no wonder they had a difficult time getting any traction at least in the US even though Rock Lobster was a cult hit

I saw them here in Cleveland, Ohio, in...1979? 1980? They were the headline act at some venue on the west side. I was struck by how polished and confident they were. And just the nicest people you could ever want to meet. After the concert they talked with everybody who wanted to talk. There were only about 25 people there. I remember some pushy woman from something called Bikini Girl magazine trying to monopolize their time. I've always thought "52 Girls" was their best song. The version on the single. And of course these raw, fast, pristine live versions from 1978-80. Just perfect! And I love the black & white. Makes it look somehow more....historic. What a wonderful group.

@@DerEchteBold It is what Punk was was all about, after bands like Rush and Yes and Genesis, rock became elitist and impossible to play for the beginner or even average musician, rock n roll lost its spirit and Punk/New Wave rekindled it. You can hear the passion, the energy and that is what makes it outstanding.
@DerEchteBold
@DerEchteBold Год назад
@@lennypatierno Well, I can understand when people say this has a Punk influence but to me, as a Punk/Metal/Hardcore guy from the 80s/90s, they always were a Pop band ; ) Anyways, that's not what someone usually means when they're calling a performance on some instrument outstanding, but yeah, I can accept the explanation. Btw, I like highly technical as well as down-to-earth raw playing, do you know Amyl and the Sniffers, for many people they rekindled the spirit of Punk just recently.
@lennypatierno
@lennypatierno Год назад
@@DerEchteBold I am talking the pre-MTV days, 79--80 when this video was made. They were not hardcore punk, they were new wave which did have its roots in punk in that it was simple drums, guitar, bass, and an amp, and originality and not a lot of production. What I consider pop from that era was ABBA, or the Bee Gees. But after MTV launched they certainly turned into pop as they gained popularity. I want to the University of Ga during that time, it was magic, and if you go there today, the kids fill the dance floor when they put on the 52s, I am seeing them Friday night and I'll be there for their last show in Athens next week.....I will check out Amyl and the Sniffers for sure.
