Seminal and influential band coming out of the first wave of punk in Los Angeles. It falls for sure into my favorites of all time.
I dedicate this body of work to the greatly inspiring Alice Bag. Her ideas and feminism mean a lot to me.

Now this the sound of early punk i grew up listening to.the bags do not get enough credit.Even though they influenced many bands.The bags kick ass!! More people should check out their music!!

I just had the awesome Privilege to have a tour of Vegas punk rock museum given by Alice Bag it was so great she was so interesting and hella- kool I’ll always remember it Alice is the queen of punk rock!!!!

BDonor to be more specific, The Bags were original LA punk rock. Not SoCal hardcore. It is indeed understood that they were seminal and important. They like all of the accomplished bands in that scene had an insane work ethic, more talent and sex appeal than most. The problem is they were somehow misguided in that they did not record enough. That legacy is whats missing. Each and every member of this band carried on professional music careers or are gone RIP, except Alice and perhaps that ambivalence was at work at the time even if subconsciously.

Yeah, they were definitely first-wave L.A. punk and not hardcore, but there's no denying they had a big influence on hardcore. They were faster and more aggressive than most of the other punk bands of that time in L.A., except for the Germs and Middle Class. They helped kick hardcore into existence.

I agree partially with both. It is good because it isn't produced in a way to soften the sound. But I agree with CAKmusic. It's underproduction has softened the edges by sounding muffled.

This reminds me so much of The Consumers and early 45 Grave - the influence along with Rob Ritter's involvement with 45 Grave makes these bands essentially joined at the hip.

@@stanr8946 Jimmi and Rob played in Phx in the Exterminators, pre Sphincter and Feederz (Consumers drummer Bob R. Dog) and Paul played drums with Micheal Ochoa on keys in Victory Acres which later had Derrick and Cris from the MeatPups, Exterminators released an lp a couple of yrs ago of their songs from '78 with Cris filling in for Rob

The history of the LA punk scene is a lot more interesting than I think it gets credit for. Like the New York/CBGBs folks always sound really sour about the UK punk scene stealing their thunder (nevermind that they all ended up with major label deals) whereas there was always a bit of a bit of looking down on Los Angeles as a bunch of spoiled rich kids crashing mommy and daddy's car for rebellion. Meanwhile, most of the bands were pretty much a stones through of every major label and might as well not have existed to the A&R people at the majors, so it was a lot more DIY in that regard.

Great band! Flash back to my Jr. High days when I heard The Bags on "Decline of the Western Civilization" album and later got to see the movie. I heard Alice is back on some new venture. I heard her not too many years ago on "Pocho Hour of Power" KPFK

When i was a kid I had an older who friend put this on a cd for me, and just to mess with be he also put the Massachusetts band of the same name on there. I was so confused for so long, both bands are punk rock as hell and definitely worth checking out.

I used to go out with the drummer in this band! He was fantastic hilarious we laughed all the time! I love to see him now. I used to live in Pasadena when that was going on. Wonder how you connect back these days? He was just such a laugh and a great boyfriend 😂😂♥️🙏🏽

The Jesus ....I just heard back from Alice herself! The song you are talking about starts at 16:12. It is called "7&7 is". It is a cover though. The original was by the band "Love". The Bags never covered the weirdos's "we got the neutron bomb".

Likely they never wanted to, same with all their stable mates.They were having too good a time and it was a 'scene', not about making records. Who had the money? Or the connections.Also a point in time quickly surfaced where the major labels would not touch anything that was punk. Unless they prettied you up, gave you a skinny tie and re-labelled you as New Wave.

Reading Alice Bag’s memoir, it says that record companies would send out scouts to the Bags shows but were not signing them until Alice could prove she could sing consistently the same live. She couldn’t because of a lot of poor sound checking which made it difficult to hear herself and because she was just so naturally energetic and aggressive on stage that she was out of breath for a good amount of the performance. Also, she didn’t really care about sounding consistent because performing was about having fun and being in the moment instead of something of structure.

First wave of punk but were basically proto hardcore. Alice Bag even mentions in her memoir that when the hardcore scene was coming out that she realized the Bags and herself were basically what may have inspired hardcore
