Dancer In The Dark performed in full, with drums, for the first time at the 2021 May camp since the victory run of the only dci show to have every judge award first place.
I'm so old that I remember when TV football and Super bowl half time shows were drum corps and marching band performances. I always thought they were so much fun and enjoyable to watch.
If they actually had that during the super bowl half-time I'd watch it. I haven't even watched the game in recent years, let alone the 'show.' This performance was great. I am always amazed at the synchronicity of it all. Just blows me away.
There’s simply nothing like the feeling you get from everyone working together to play music with as much soul, emotion, technique and heart that you can give. It sends chills down my spine-remembering that feeling of utter unity and togetherness, as your body feels itself playing and your ears hear the resulting beauty. My years in band and drum corps were so incredibly special, and you NEVER FORGET the magic.
Yes, I’m a violinist that ended up doing band because my school didn’t have an orchestra and I wanted to compete with violin. I did pit percussion because my mom thought I was too “pale and tragic” to march in 100 degree June Memphis heat. I had no idea what was going on behind me. But we always watched the footage back the weekend after our competitions, and the first time I saw us, it took my breath away and gave me chills! We did Candide, Make Our Garden Grow, and West Side Story that year (Leonard Bernstein). These guys are amazing!😍
Never had the patience it takes to play at this level, but you hit the nail on the head. All parts coming together as one is the reason I love music in almost every style. More importantly is the kid repping the U, props fellow Utah Man!
Yes. Hardest place i played at was the Indianapolis Hoosier Dome back in the early 90's. Standing five feet away from somebody, you pretty much have to shout to be heard. My best advice to any director trying to prepare for a performance in a dome is to make the kids wear earplugs while rehearsing. Worked well for us. I marched with George Rogers Clark H.S. from KY. G.N. finalist from 1988-92. Small band with about 40 or so total brass. If you wanna check out an old school crowd pleaser, look up GRC band 1992. Music of Blood Sweat and Tears. 6th place 89.45
The young woman directing is EXCELLENT at it! I'm so used to seeing the teachers doing the directing - it's wonderful to see such a young person doing it!
When my daughter was in high school, the lead director was a professional, but on the field and in the classroom their band was directed by students. They won many state championships and were considered one of the top five bands in the state of Tennessee. This doesn’t surprise me at all.
The drum majors are almost always students or recent alumni. The bad directors don't march or stand up on ladders to direct in marching band and drumlines.
I marched four years at The University of Texas. My time spent playing and performing on the field are some of my best memories. Thanks for sharing. I will always miss it.
While most of us are sitting down watching some TV or your head is in your phone, THESE Amazing Talents are in the studio PRACTICING TO BE THE BEST THERE EVER WAS!!! That's why no other can do it!!! NYC🤘
This is spring ensemble and listen to the detail already in place. This was an outstanding symphonic sound so balanced. Yes there was click bait, and I bit. Having been in a small corps in 1982, I can truly relate to this work. This kids in corps are truly talented. I remember the drum line instructor wrote something technical for a local HS to execute. 2 weeks and they couldn't get it. He was frustrated and wanted to know if it was too difficult. So the drum line, took the piece studied and discussed it for 5 minutes, and made a tape that was flawless for the local hs school to learn from. The oldest corps member was 15, youngest 12. Their statement was, hey that was fun, what else you got? Those were the days.
I have a phone with a cracked screen, and its a phone that seems to think it's fun to switch letters, add words, drop letters, and switch words without my input or consent. I also have one eye that doesn't work, and another that's acting up painfully, so proof reading everything that's typed, is not plausible. Your lucky there was only one typo.
That was just plain special. We don't really have drum corps in Australia, but when you see good music well played, it doesn't matter where it came from. I would have loved to see the final product. I am in total awe of these young people being able to play so well while doing drill as well. Every person in that group has good reason to be nothing but proud of themselves.
I am a drum corp fanatic, this is BEAUTIFUL. I remember going to a DCI show when I was a freshman or sophomore in high school. It rained so bad that they had to stand in place, but I was so moved by the music
The conductor did a magnificent job CONDUCTING and LEADING this piece. Thank you for showing that we are not just metronomes out there. Bravo, and BRAVO corps.
Marching and playing with a high school band and drum corps for over 50 years; I miss the competitions and sitting in the stands hearing a group on the field play Star Wars and someone near me saying if our corps was playing it you would seeing stars. Brought such a good feeling. At my last competition in a junior corps we played a new song to our opening drill. While marching onto the field the crowd roared with cheers. At the start of our performance we played one note and paused. The crowd thought we made a terrible boo boo! But about maybe 7-10 seconds later we played two notes and paused; the crowd then burst into cheers for they understood what we were playing; the theme song from Jaws. That was one of my greatest memories of a junior corps and you’ll never experience that feeling again. Love watching them online. Enjoy and have fun!
Marched 3 years and watched a large portion of DCI corps and I can say that this is magnificent!!! The arrangement and conducting is astounding, I can't wait for my senior year, and possibly pursuing a higher level of music.
This brings back so many memories, I wasn't a drummer but I played a woodwind instrument, this gave me the chills, great job y'all, much love from a former marching band player class of 04, Chesapeake Virginia
I didn't know a thing about indoor drumline until 2014 when my grandson started in this. I was so enthralled by their performances and went to as many as possible! Now I am hooked on percussion! These kids are amazing!
My daughter plays French horn, having begun in high school with orchestra and marching band now plays in a symphony orchestra. Somewhere along the line her dad and I listened to her with her band at Carnegie Hall. I enjoy telling people that she went from sounding like a sick cow to being able to play at Carnegie Hall.
@@lyndavonkanel8603 Most commendable.... and impressive. I started on trumpet at 9, and tortured my family learning to make something coherent come out of it. In sixth grade I was encouraged to try French Horn by my teacher. I was reluctant based on the size and awkwardness of the case (Really). But I came to the notion that I made the right move in switching. I certainly don't regret it now. I would encourage your daughter to persist with her horn. Music is an entree to so much more than simply an opportunity to perform with others. I've never regretted the time or energy expended to become proficient. And can honestly say that D&B Corp was among the most rewarding experiences of my life.
I was in blue stars in '21 and I just gotta say that hearing this ballad being played in person in the tunnel was so unreal, just an absolute classic drum corp piece
As a previous USMC D&B Corps and USMC Band drummer I must say Kudos to ya'll. So few can appreciate the dedication, the sweat and hours you all put into this. Bravo!
Nothing in the whole world can beat the feeling when making music together. It’s a universal language that reaches everyone in the soul. No other art form has ever achieved that.
I played flute in symphonic band in my early years and this brought me back... What a fantastic display of musicianship, collaboration at its best, and a clear love of making music. Congratulations!
I will never forget sitting on the curb in Allentown in '05 listening to the hornline run through this piece. Still one of my favorite memories of tour that didn't involve my corps. Its right up there with sitting in the parking lot at Broken Arrow, OK listening to SCV play "Music of the NIght" and right as they got to the big hit there was a lightning flash in the distance, and pretty much any time I got to hear Cavs play "Over the Rainbow" or Phantom play "Elsa's."
did this as a ballad this year in fall marching band as a guard member, the visuals and silks and everything were just amazing and so were the band members
My ONLY complaint is that you didn't record the sound LOUDER. I wish I could have heard it at the full volume it achieved in the auditorium. I probably would have blown my mother board (as I did when watching another loud musical performance), but it would have been SO totally worth it! This was so incredibly awesome! These kids were so totally well-tuned and synchronized to produce an awesome sound experience.
I do not know Dancer In The Dark... but this was pretty awesome. Aside from the music the graceful movements of the various players was pretty cool and impressive.
After work I would slip into the marching band room. They would goof of til Mr Lane came in and got them together. Nothing like seeing them go from that stage to being the smallest band even invited to March in the main street parade from the Castle to downtown!! Made working so many nights at the concession stand worth it!!!
This makes me even more excited for DCI this year! As someone who just made it into a corps, I’m so excited to see all the other corps and what they’ll bring this year!
I miss marching band. ‘86 grad. Hearing/seeing videos like this make me sentimental. These kids are good. Would have truly enjoyed this live on the field.
When I was in junior high school (1966), most of us brought our own instruments [budget & etc.] Our director was stuck with five snare drums and six tubas. Plus the usual wind instruments & strings. He chose for us to perform the Hogan’s Heroes theme as our performance opener. He was very disappointed at our rendition. He went to the back of the orchestra, and took over two snare drums. He hit them so hard, I expected him to break the skins on each. He did not. He said, “There. That is how I want you all to play this music.” So we did. I was Clarinet, and never realized how loud I could make my instrument. At performance, the audience was so breathless, they did not applaud. For about 15 seconds. The only standing ovation I ever received. I believe The Cadets have the instruments to do another justice to the Hogan’s Heroes Theme.
on Australia we really don't have a strength in this area, all I can say as a jazz person I really enjoyed this feed thank you so much and as you grow enjoy what you have been part of God bless to all
Met an elderly man it was a January first morning he proudly said he blew bone it the rose parade , He was looking at one of those life milestones. Nothing makes you a better athlete marching, coordinating, hearing, breathing, tuning sound of instrument, looking good while wearing ridiculous hat...So you are getting low class comments? Wish the world grows up. Amen
Funny how I stumbled upon this video and just happened to see your comment. Then I instantly remembered you from 2008. My dad was the left end snare in the cac888 show (the one with the long hair😂) Just had to say hello haha😊
Many hours working together to get the sound, balance and blend, on top of the hours of personal practice to get the music, movement, posture, et al, correct. Bravo from a retired educator who is now adjudicating on a regular basis. Lovely work tutti! Thank you for sharing.
Absolutely incredible!!! It takes a lot of talent and time and practice to be able for a group to accomplish something like that!!! As a music lover, I am in live with this performance!!
It sounded great to me. If I could do any one of those instruments, I'd be excited to had been a part of something that sounded so wonderful. It gave me goosebumps.
