i was at mountain jam about a month after levon died... i was vending and we served some burritos to the ramblers, and i cant begin to tell you how broken up they were over his death... the guitarist told me levon was like a father to him
@sa65cn1 - this had been in the Band's repertoire before the Who recorded it. It was recorded by Marvin Gaye in 1964 and was written by Holland-Dozier-Holland. That's were the Band and the Who got if from.
I was at this show also! I remember thinking, when The Band opened with this, "holy shit, the Dead are gonna have to play their asses off" They did. It was a great show!!
Holy buckets this is a great song. Didn't you LOVE the way Levon would turn his head to the side to sing? Idk why it blew me away that the drummer would sing - whoo hoo thanks for posting this
My heart breaks for the music that died when Levon died, and passed into the eternal afterlife. I am sure he is now again making music on a grand scale, we not yet dead could never understand until we ourselves die and pass on to that spiritual realm.
@leeharveyosmosis Yeah, admittedly but it was different times too. The Band would not get on mainstream media nowadays - just look at the likes of Wilco. It just grates me that on every other classic rock video some 15 year old starts ranting about how they were born in the wrong era and stuff when there's really some excellent artists out there nowadays, they just have to look a little bit harder.
@taojjbtcrf108 The band, talking heads, pixies... are all bands who were NOT mainstream in their time but gained critical recognition. Similarly there are bands out there nowadays who are not mainstream but making wonderful music. You just have to know where to look. In 20 years time, kids will say I wish I was born in the 2000s to enjoy grizzly bear.
@iangcunningham I'm sure Grizzly Bear has quite a few multi instrumentalists. Older bands were certainly more technically gifted, people had lesser variety of recrational activities - no internet, no youtube :) So they rehearsed and played in their free time. But that doesn't mean, musicians, artists nowadays are any less passionate about what they do.
@psirou You nailed it, psirou.... totally nailed it. There are sooo many incredible bands out there today who don't fit into the "pop" mold and therefore will never be heard by the masses. Oh, well, their loss as far as I'm concerned. I'd even take it a step further, though, and recommend people take a closer look at the LOCAL talent wherever they happen to live. The most often played tracks on my ipod are from bands from within 50 miles of my front door.
@bucks1955mjm you rock old top!!!! god bless the fatman and garth for giving the gift of music not only to members of their respective projects but to the whole universe as well!!!! never saw the band but have at least 70 some odd dead shows under the belt..SPAC 1984 1st Shoreline1995
a superior talent indeed with the good fortune to surround himself within an unlikely eclectic group of musicians who made music history. there's absolutely not a chance in hell that The Band will ever happen again. thank heavens for all their recordings and The Last Waltz.
taojjbtcrf108 you have me listening to the pixies! I was born in 1955 but still never heard or listened until you said in your comment that you liked "The Band" along with "The Pixies" so I had to see why you put the pixies in same category as the band. By the way, you did miss seeing live the band, but you are able to see their recordings and experience somewhat the same thing as live.
