The Voidz was a blessing in disguise for The Strokes. It allowed Julian do just try whatever he wanted without sticking to a certain "sound". It helped him progress as a song writer massively!

Agree entirely! I think all of the Strokes’ members branching off and doing side projects led to the greatness that was The New Abnormal. It’s such a focused record at only 9 tracks

''One Way Trigger'' and ''Selfless'' from The Strokes ''Human Sadness'' and ''The Eternal Tao'' from The Voidz Julian uses the same chord progression on these songs (and there's more that i don't remember right now) and are basically the same song if you pay attention, he knows how to make the same chords unique enough to make them sound like different songs, that's a testament to his songwritting abilities

Tyranny is better tho. Virtue is alright, QYRUS is the best track of it. But also ALIEN CRIMELORD is a masterpiece and that's straight from TYRANNY. As somebody else put it, Tyranny is like the album you would play for a self aware robot awekening in a post apoclypse .

@@rudywilliams6538 Qyurrus is straight from Tyranny tho ..like Dare I Care, Father Electricity, Nintendo Blood. But Qyyrryus was actually a Jeff Kite song. 85% of it was made by him.. Julian just inserted the lyrics and then more effects came into it. Tyranny i think was also mainly a Jeff Kite thing too, but Human sadneses was a demo from Julian. Their next album was heavily produced.

@@chibiromano5631 Qyurryus is not straight off of tyranny lol. it's way more dancy than anything on that album. The production on virtue lets the quality of the songs shine through, and the production gets dirty when it needs to on songs like black hole and we're where we were

Thanks for bringing more exposure to them. Favorite band of all time; i started as a strokes fan ended up as a Voidz diehard. I appreciate music that's so sonically dense and expressive that you can NEVER stop listening to it, much like Tame Impala. I love how every time I revisit Tyranny I have a new favorite track, every single one has so much thought and nuanced sounds that songs line "Nintendo Blood" can go under your radar then you realize its INCREDIBLE. That song paints the picture of trying to hold back a mental breakdown and wanting to be positive but just melts into this spine chilling existential crisis by the end. This band is so special, Julian is so special, I'm so glad this band exists. It's crazy to think they've been around for 8 years!

First Impressions is 100% underrated imo, so is Phrazes for the Young, both are definitely classics that are slept on. I saw the Strokes a few nights ago, and they played a majority of songs from First Impressions and the New Abnormal, I think some of their best songs are on First Impressions and it’s flows really well, not a miss on the whole thing. It’s my favorite of their albums personally, which I know if a hot take, but I think all their albums are classics except Comedown, just a few skips that didn’t age well for me. Great video!

Honestly I feel like Comedown is slept on too. I understand why it might not be fun for a Strokes fan but if you take it in isolation as its own album separate from the rest of their discog it's such a beautiful and artistic album to me. The whole thing has an underlying lo-fi melancholy to it that resurfaces on songs like 80s Comedown Machine, Slow Animals, Chances, Call It Fate etc that I don't really find on other Strokes albums save for Angles (Life Is Simple in the Moonlight for example). I also really love how experimental they got with the production too, that really sets it apart imo

FIOE is a very significant album, I have discovered the strokes in 2007 when a friend plays Juicebox on an acoustic guitar and straightaway fell in love with the strokes! As a teenager back then, I think the strokes is the coolest band because of Juicebox, Heart in the cage & Reptilia. As time goes on, I started to appreciate and keep on coming back to their older stuffs like Hard to explain & Trying your luck. I can't never move on from those two songs.

Happy to finally see this video, as I'm a strong advocate for the Voidz, particularly their debut. As much as I love the rock fusions of Virtue, it didn't immediately captivate me to the same degree that Tyranny did. The apocalyptic motiff, distorted vocals and instrumentals, the wide variety of influences. Its such a weird, fascinating piece of experimental noise that blew me away just as much on subsequent relistens as it did that first experience. The run from opener Take Me In Your Army all the way to Father Electricity is one of the most incredible runs of music on any album I've heard the last decade. That said, it isn't necessarily the most consistent record. The tracks Johan Von Bronx and Nintendo Blood don't do it for me as much as the rest. Even if I still like those tracks, they don't compare to what comes before and after them. But the highs are unrivaled for me. Crunch Punch and Where No Eagles Fly are some of the most lyrically rich songs in Julian's discography. M.utually A.ssured D.estruction is the most powerful, even raw depiction of anger and frustration I've heard in a rock song. Father Electricity and Dare I Care have some of the most off-kilter uses of Latin/Afro inspired sounds on the whole album. And of course, Human Sadness, which I honestly could never put to justice here. Julian's best song by a mile. And again, not to desparage or undercut Virtue, as its a fantastic follow-up, and showed that the band was more than just abrasive experimentalism. But I feel like its always overshadowing Tyranny when The Voidz is the topic of discussion. Sure, Tyranny is the far more sonically demanding project, but as a result its the more interesting of the two to me. Plus, it showed me that Julian was more than just the guy that started The Strokes. And as much as I love The Strokes, seeing the experimentalism here pay off is super rewarding. Easily my favorite album from Julian across all his projects, and I'd even argue one of the better albums of the 2010s.
@drparadox1061
@drparadox1061 Год назад
I couldn't agree more about Tyranny! To me, Virtue wasn't quite as special because it was so drastically different from the grandiose, elaborate and thought-out nature of the Tyranny tracks/style. Virtue was just so varied and scattered back and forth (among the really great tunes here and there, like Pointlessness). Tyranny was simply the most definitive of The Voidz, in my opinion. It was especially groundbreaking to me, being the first time I had heard genuine experimental rock (already being a big JC and Strokes fan too). Although I would be curious to see another album from them, I would've preferred to see them following their experimental footsteps in Tyranny. But I understand it's not for everybody... it's for nobody. 😉

Julian and The Voidz came to São Paulo in 2017. It was a great show. The venue was rather small, perhaps less than 800 people there. I've seen the Strokes live multiples time, but I think I've never seen Julian so relaxed on stage. He was laughing and touching the audience, looking genuinely happy. I still can't believe I've seen one of the great personalities in the history of music in such an informal situation. Anyway, even though I don't think a lot of their songs are great, I believe the Voidz were a nice influence for Julian. They allowed him to relax, to lose the pressure of being a great rock star full of expectations and just to what the hell he wanted.

Edit: the song that got me to them was QYURRYUS, I remember saying so bad, what the fuck is this cr4p?, then it's like, I mean it's weird?, then like, it's kinda ok? I guess somebody can like it I guess?, then I found myself singing that "I LOST WHATS MINE", all along my day while playing tf2, then I loved The Voidz and Virtue + The live versions of the tracks during the Night Show Tours (Jimmy Fallon, Kimmel, and all that stuff) were so good, specially Leave It In My Dreams. I've been so much fun listening to The Voidz, I found them in the recommended songs of my favourite songs playlist on spotify and at first I didn't even realise Julian Casablancas was singing. The strokes had just become my favourite band due to comedown machine solely and thinking back I have no idea how I didn't recognize his voice. I instantly became in love with human sadness and slowly listened to the whole album. Now I most fondly remember crunch punch from tyranny. Then I started listening to virtue and at first I couldn't really get into it. Yeah, The Voidz. My favorite band atm. I was hooked the second I heard QYURRYUS for the first time. Still one of my favorites together with Human Sadness and Dare I Care. Hope they drop Voidz 3 soon but I guess this won’t happen any time soon as Julian is touring with The Strokes over the summer.

im glad Julian had another project to be able to experiment! the voidz are great , imo they could never compare to the strokes, nobody can for me, but i think he got to do some different types of stuff he wanted!

The Strokes came from priveleged backgrounds and got loaded back in the day. But you couldn't hate on them cause the songs were so tight.

HELL YES, I love The Voidz and everything that Julian Casablancas does so much Also something I find very interesting, on Julians solo album Phrases For The Young, he intentionally held himself back in fear of the album being something that people listened to once, and likely wouldn't take it seriously, so he instead sought to bridge the gap between the traditional and the overly weird music. Later he stated he wished he'd gone further with its weirdness, and (of course) a few years later was able to go more all out with The Voidz, which fell for what he was originally afraid of, with it just not being taken very seriously at all, even compared to his solo album. I very regularly listen to a playlist of every fully released song Julian Casablancas has worked on (that i can also find on spotify) and with 132 songs, I have no idea how he does it but every single one is just such a banger

Didn't even realise it was Julian Casablacas when I first started listening to them because of how different the sound was and how they used his voice on the records. Human Sadness is honestly one of the greatest songs ever made, in my opinion, and Pointlessness is a perfect album closer.

I love the Voidz. The lyrics are so much more personal to JC and meaningful to me. At first I loved the surface level tracks, but the feeling of "getting" the weirder songs is pure euphoria.

You cant really give the voidz a genre besides like experimental rock. I can’t wait for their new stuff. They made an IG post about new music coming soon so hopefully within the next two years

I remember the night "Human Sadness" dropped, and I thought to myself "Damn, this is the Bohemian Rhapsody of the modern era." And hear me out, I know that's a tall order of a compliment to leverage, but I stand by it wholeheartedly.
