Raccoons are always fun to watch, and these animals in Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in Florida's Big Cypress Swamp certainly entertained - one on the heavily protected bird feeders (pah, what protection!) and the other behaving naturally looking for underwater treats such as crayfish to eat.
Although this raccoon didn't catch anything while we were watching there is an aspect of raccoon behaviour that gives it part of the scientific name, Procyon lotor; lotor is Latin for 'washer'. They often pick up the food item with their front paws to examine it and rub the item, sometimes to remove unwanted parts. This gives the appearance of the raccoon "washing" the food. The tactile sensitivity of raccoons' paws is increased if this rubbing action is performed underwater, as the water softens the hard layer covering the paws.
Florida has the four smallest sub-species of raccoon found throughout the Americas.
