Set on a remote island off the west coast of Ireland, THE BANSHEES OF INISHERIN follows lifelong friends Pádraic (Colin Farrell) and Colm (Brendan Gleeson), who find themselves at an impasse when Colm unexpectedly puts an end to their friendship. A stunned Pádraic, aided by his sister Siobhán (Kerry Condon) and troubled young islander Dominic (Barry Keoghan), endeavours to repair the relationship, refusing to take no for an answer. But Pádraic's repeated efforts only strengthen his former friend’s resolve and when Colm delivers a desperate ultimatum, events swiftly escalate, with shocking consequences.

It's funny at first until you realize how heartbreaking of a statement it really is. Friends insult each other all the time but there is probably nothing worse than telling someone you've known for a long time that you simply don't like the person they are.

@@helvete_ingres4717 yes, but I suppose it's different when you live on an island. Everyone knows everyone and there's not that many people to talk to. So telling your best friend you don't want to talk to them anymore on an isolated island can make them go depressed and extremely lonely

I had a friend for my entire life tell me in February that I'm a wasted potential and he doesn't respect me. Not exactly in a nice way. Haven't spoken to him since, since I have no idea really how to talk to someone who I liked and never said anything this bad to, ever, who just threw this in my face. When I was actually rather worn out and tired and exhausted from work and other things.

FIlms have for years covered the heartbreak of romantic relationships ending and the normality of feeling hurt but friendships ending can also be just as bad. It was nice to see that depicted in a movie for once.

I love that at 00:35 there is one single shot that tilts up to reveal more sky from a lower angle. It's the moment you see Padraic's relief that his friend might still like him. Absolutely fucking murders me. The audience knows better than its characters, but when you see that extra bit of sky you feel the same glimmer of hope as Padraic that maybe the plot will go in a different direction. Then Colm gives a crushing blow, and the camera goes right back to its original angle at 00:42.

"I thought you did." Wow! Such a short dialogue, but so to the point. How many of us had thought that "that other person" did like us, or did love us, in all probability without ever hearing such words from "that other person'. We all are victims of our imagination/fantasies/expectations/thoughts at least once in our lives. Ah.. the first disappointment, the first heartbreak. It is always life-changing. Hold on and pray. It'll be ok again someday. Not like before, but you'll feel less pain.

At first I was mad, sad, hurt, and depressed but then I thought of how happy he must be right now. And how even as kids he was always conflicted internally. I can understand not relating to someone, but to call them your friend for decades and then one day decide you’ve had enough of them is a godawful thing to do. The whole point of Farrell’s character is that he’s a simple guy who is content with his life; he’s a decent if unambitious person. I can understand why it may be hard to relate to someone like that, but I would never act like I’m someone’s friend if I didn’t forgive their character flaws. These are insanely unreasonable people. It’s not a coincidence that the backdrop is a civil war taking place within earshot of the characters. The characters in the movie are symbols of the cruelty, misunderstandings and even desolation that leads people to be at war with each other. The innocent ones including the donkey and the sister are the victims of dumb people who just can’t let things go and get along. As nice and lovable as Collin Ferrell is-he still should have left that insane maniac alone after he cut off his first finger. That said, the movie is well written, well acted, tragic, comic and haunting. WAR IS FUTILE.

What makes this film so brilliant is it covers a topic so rarely discussed on film - the end of friendships. Specifically an intentional end of a friendship. I've once as an adult had to end a friendship with a friend and it also was kind of a "I just don't like you no more" moment and realization and a lot of the dynamics of this movie resonated so much with me what it was like to "break up" with a friend. Sometimes there is no big argument or blow up, sometimes you just simply stop liking a friend and they just don't get it. It's hard on them for sure but it also isn't even having to tell someone you just... Don't want to talk to or see a person socially anymore as an adult.

Friendship breakups are, in my opinion, a lot more sad than a romantic one. Friends are (at least they’re supposed to be) so non-transactional. It’s solely on the agreement of wanting and liking each others company and nothing else. Nothing more involved and nothing less. Nothing about looks, status, sex, etc. Just enjoying that person in your life. I think we can all unfortunately relate to a breakup with a friend which is what makes this movie so potent. The setting makes it harder too. This is in 1923 on a small island outside of Ireland. Your friends are your friends and that’s it. There aren’t new people to meet. Padraic is truly alone when Colm decided he just doesn’t like him anymore.

I swear this movie has career best performances from both Farrell and Gleeson. All the stuff they do is so subtle but so precise.

Booked a ticket before I even watched the trailer. These three reuniting is absolute heaven for me. And after I watched the trailer I was not only excited, I was intrigued. We can all relate to losing a friend. But someone saying they don't like you anymore and has no justifiable reason for it! Is much less common. I felt Colin Farrell's heart break when he said it! I bloody saw it and it hurt me too which is just a testament to the acting talent we have on display here.

@makeitthrough_ I posted this over a year ago. I've seen this movie 20 times since then so calm your ass down. 😆 But if I were to entertain your point! It's very clear from both characters point of view I believe.

My best friend did this to me yesterday after 27 years friendship. I don’t know what I did or said wrong. A month ago out of the blue she said not to contact her unless it was life or death. I left it and contacted her to see what was wrong yesterday. She said she just needs a break. Then you tube recommended me this video. Nearly exactly how confused I am.

Reading comments, and I dont think a lot of people understood what really happened, lol. He didn't stop being friends with him because he stopped liking him ... He said that to him because he was angry at himself. He now realized that he's towards the end of his life. And he feels like a failure. He feels like he hung out with his buddy too much and didn't do anything to help change the world. Leave something behind. Accomplish something. That's why he starts teaching music and trying to write a song. All the people here sharing their stories on how a friend just randomly dropped them with no explanation, it was most likely not you. They're upset with themselves. People can grow apart, not saying it isn't possible. But theres reasons why that happens. No one drops someone else for no reason.
