A big reason why Homolka only got 12 years was because she was tried before Bernardo, whose lawyer withheld video evidence that was only disclosed after Homolka entered a plea deal. When Bernardo went to trial and the video evidence came out it showed Homolka was significantly more involved in the murders than was revealed during her plea bargain. The prosecution thought she would adequately play the battered woman defence if gone to trial, and as a result went incredibly soft on a woman who premeditated her own sisters rape and murder. Bernardo was a violent criminal before he met Homolka, but only killed after they were together. She deserves to be in the exact same place he is.

Actually, they didn't destroy the tapes till after the case, the defense made sure that the tapes didn't go out into the public, made sure they knew where the tapes were and made sure no one would see them. Lots of outrage towards the defense but that is what a lawyer is supposed to do gotta defend your client. But the crown just really needed Karla's confession and wanted to use her against Paul.

It's because the police had made a plea deal with her before viewing the tapes and once they viewed the tapes they realized that it was a huge mistake and that she really was the mastermind behind the attacks. In the videos she was mostly telling Paul what to do to the girls. It's just that she made it seem like she was a battered housewife and was forced to do what her husband said when she wasn't really. He did hit her but she still wanted to do those things to the girls. They have a documentary on them on RU-vid that goes into more detail.

ebonyloveivory I feel the need to say something about this though. Before the convictions the police made a deal bargain with karla to get information. At this time the police had no idea karla took part in the murders and rapes. Unfortunately they made the plea bargain final before they found the tapes (which were found by paul's lawyer i believe, who resigned after this case due to the horrific tapes) and it was then that they found out that she was a large part of the acts. The years she got were in reflection of hiding the knowledge of the rapes and murders, not reflective of her participating in them. In canada a nickname she had was " the poster girl for the plea bargain". After the plea bargain is set in stone, there was nothing they could do about it.

Sure, I understand that. But do you realize what is "set in stone"? The fact that those girls are dead and their families tormented with the fact that they'll never have a future with them. Also, the repercussions of her past actions on her children's future, well being, etc. Does that sound right to you?

She got a deal because her lawyer obstructed justice and withheld the tapes. By the time they handed them over there was nothing they could do, the deal was done. Was a kid in Canada at the time, and it was a huge deal and even when she was released she fought tooth and nail over the restrictions they put on her no remorse at all she only cared about herself. Even now she has kids of her own and her access to there school caused a huge uproar there, she will never truly be able to walk away from this thank God. People should always know what a monster she is. As for him, that's Canada for you. Life without parole is considered cruel and unusual punishment.
