Picked up a Baritone Uke about a year ago. Never had any music training or lessons and I'm far from good at it but I just wanted to say I'm a d*mned sight better because of your soprano lessons that I've been working off. You've effectively become my music teacher and just wanted to say THANK YOU!

Hello M. LYNCH, I'm French and it's been ten months since I started I learn the ukulele (concert) with your videos. A big thank you for your lessons and your explanations. I bought the same OU55CE or I put D'Addario J68 strings for information. The sound is great and I can play with different styles. I'm working on a concept to promote the baritone. The public is quite surprised of the result and the kids ask a lot of questions about this instrument. Sorry for my bad English. Sincerely. Regis.
It's technically a fourth below because the baritone is a lower pitched instrument and when you go from D to G it's just a four note span. That's how I teach it because I want them to realize where the notes on these instruments are on the piano. It leads to more knowledgeable musicianship and fewer mysteries in their world of music.
Yes you can get CGEA strings for the Baritone. . . It's personal choice of sound. . . I prefer, myself, the standard tuning strings. I've been told you can get all nylgut baritone now from Aquila. . .and Worth as well. .

If you put a capo on the fifth fret on the baritone uke you will be in the same tuning as the other size ukes. So buy a capo for ur baritone so you can change keys using the same cord shapes.
Mike - glad to see you've touched on the baritone ukulele. I thank you for all of the beginning baritone ukulele players. I think that the 5-step discussion perhaps sounds a bit scarier than it really is. There are a few nylon sets out there that are not ginormous. Worth and Aguila make full flourocarbon Low-D sets. Ken Middleton also has some High-D Living Water strings that will be popular with re-entrant tuning. These are also all flourocarbon. Jeff / Humble Baritonics.
I have some extra nylon classical guitar strings . I just got a baritone uku . I want to tune it to a . Low G CEA . I did some measuring of the strings from the classical guitar and the standard DGBE uku strings I have on it now . The classical 1st string (E) is the same size as the 2nd string of the uku's the classical 2nd string ( B) is the same size as the uku's 3rd string and the classical 3 string ( G) is the same as the uku's 4th string . So can I make the Low G CEA from the strings I have using both the uku''s I have now and the classical 3 lower nylon strings ? If I move the uku's 2nd string (B) down to the 1st string Its only a few turns down to make it a (A) . I could then use the classical's 1st string (E) which should turn to a (E) as the 2nd string on the uku . I can then use the classical 2nd string (B) and put it as the 3rd string on the uku and turn it up just a little to make it a (C) . And lastly I can use the Classical 3rd string (G) and the 4 string on the uku as the Low (G) since its all ready a (G) . What do you think ? Will I be getting the same sound and string diameter from doing this as I would If I bought the 4 strings from a dealer ? Is the Low G on the uku the same pitch as the G on a classical guitar ? Should I just move the 3rd string (G) from the uku up to the 4th string .? Will that be the same pitch as the dealer's string ? I didn't want to put more string tension than the uku was made for
D'Addario also has synthetic gut strings now, developed in cooperation with Aquila. I used 2 sets when I made my double course baritone. Thanks to these videos I hope to be able to play it soon.
I ordered some off of amazon. they're nice. I had to get another baritone for regular tuning and my old one GCEA. the aquillas have a great sound. transforms songs to hear them on the baritone with standard soprano tuning.

To be the 4th Ukulele instrument, ie a Baritone Ukulele, Chord Shapes need to be as are the previous 3 Ukuleles, using GCEA Tuning.!! ...A Baritone Uke from the seller will be tuned DGBE, Requiring Guitar Chord Shapes.!!! ...Re-Tuning to GCEA at receipt of their Baritone Ukulele will allow ALL Ukulele Players to be from the Smallest to the Baritone to use Identical Chord Shapes.!!! ...This could be good for you Michael, you may get, 4 String Guitar Players & Baritone Ukulele Players.??? ... better to just compare the baritone ukulele to a guitar and a regular ukulele is the same as a guitar with the capo on the 5th fret - 2 strings of course so the guitar on the 5th fret is a guitalele with all 6 stings in effect
This is great!! I've just started learning the baritone ukulele to get my finger more used to 4 strings, as i'm trying to learn banjo as well, and big, dumb guitar hands need to re-learn...I've just taken the top 2 strings off a small kids guitar, work pretty good 😂
Hello, Mike! I love your presentation and warmth. I just randomly inherited a pretty nice baritone ukulele from a friend that I want to play ... and I have never, ever played a musical instrument, stringed or otherwise. Do you have, or could you recommend, any training videos for the rankest of rank beginners? It seems like most videos I've found online on baritone ukes presuppose that you're coming to it from another instrument. And I know I'm kind of coming into all this at a weird angle, but everything I've found online seems to start with "obvious" givens, things that one should already know about other ukuleles' tuning, or guitar tuning, or ... uh, basic musical theory? I have this lovely instrument, and I figured out how to tune it. I guess I'm hoping for some rock-bottom, nuts'n'bolts, "Put your fingers here and we call that this note" kind of videos? (Again, like your style!)
Got a baritone uke several years ago and many (if not most) chord melody arrangements sound better (IMHO) pitched a 4th down (or a 5th up as Mike explains it) in linear tuning (low 4th string). Still my favorite instrument. I do miss Mike.

Marguerite Farrell You can use the same chords from a guitar, just keep in mind that the top two strings are excluded (E and A). I don't know too much about ukulele, but I think it'll sound deeper than the usual ukulele we know and love.
Is the only reason you don't want to use tenor strings on the baritone is that they might be to short ? Why would you end up breaking them ? Does the baritone string need to start of with a bigger diameter to get the same tuning because of the longer distance ? So if you try to tune a smaller diameter string thats on the tenor it will break before it gets to the same tone on the baritone because of the longer distance of the string ? .
Nice video. I have experience with the acoustic guitar. So, my transfer from tenor ukes that I play to the baritone uke which I am now discovering shouldn't be too overwhelming a task. But, will still take some getting used to :)
I love the sound... I play no instruments. The Baritone is the one that seems to stand alone. Should a beginner play a Baritone? Or should one of the other three?
If you are really interested in Playing Uke, I believe you should start with Concert or Tenor for ease of playing, then switch to Baritone, but if you already play guitar, you can go straight to the Baritone. I also find that it is worth the while to know how to play traditional Uke as well as baritone, I play concert,Tenor and baritone, and I play my baritone the most. You will notice as you experiment that certain keys, sound more mellow and are easier to play between different Ukes
Baritone is a great place to start. It is no harder to play so if you like the sound you should start with baritone. The smaller ukulele's are hard to play because they are tiny and often sound too brilliant. Choose by ear and what feels comfortable in your hands instead of what other people started with.
Good on you Mike! Nice to see some coverage of the Baritone uke. I hope you go on with this idea as the Baritone can be a world unto itself given its mid range sound and the possibility of bringing guitar songs into the uke world that don't quite convert to a soprano due to pitch. I am trying alternative tunings for the Baritone. I realize that's probably further advanced than what you are presenting at the moment but I would appreciate thoughts on the various options available down the track.
even though my comment is 7 years later, if you think of the standard ukulele as being 5 steps higher than the baritone, then if you put a capo on the 5th fret of the tenor you now have a standard ukulele with low G
Well explained. I have been learning playing tenor uke and have guitar. Need to practise both tenor uke and also want to practise the guitar. Want to get something portable. Not sure to get another baritone or mini guitar. What do you suggest ?
