The difference is that Stephen is Audrey's first born son who was law abiding for 65 years, while Richard Hillman was Audrey' son in law (so more distant) and tried to kill Audrey and Emily for mercenary reasons not to mention that Richard's attempts to kill Audrey and Emily were premeditated and cold blooded. While yes Stephen killed Rufus in cold blood, Rufus chose to blackmail Stephen and offered Michael a job to spite Stephen while neither Emily nor Audrey behaved like that. Apart from knocking Sarah unconscious which Stephen did out of desperation, Stephen did not harm his family. Ken understands where Audrey is coming from because he protected Daniel when Daniel pushed him down the stairs (though that was heat of the moment and Daniel did initially confess to the police).

From what I understand Stephen's grandfather pressured Audrey to give Stephen up for adoption and during the time period Audrey was living in it wasn't easy for a woman/teenager to be a single parent anyway. Stephen clearly met and reconnected with Audrey, Gail etc when he was over 18 and there is no evidence that his adopted family were not kind to him. Also just because Audrey gave him up for adoption that doesn't mean she doesn't love him. Poor Audrey probably feels immense guilt that Stephen committed those terrible crimes but he had so many chances to stop everything spiralling - he could have chosen to stop drugging Carla after he accidentally drugged himself meaning Rufus would never have found out, he could have chosen not to take out a life insurance on Elaine, he could have chosen not to split Owen and Jenny up, he could have handed himself in when Leo died. @@abbieroseholden4174

While I agree that Stephen is unstable, he should have been sent to prison for his crimes and given psychiatric help for his instability. I can't agree with Peter killing him. An entire street of people thought Jenny was in danger (even though Stephen dropped the broken bottle at the last minute) and none of them tried to kill Stephen.

I thought at first it was an accident but then Peter said he accelerated because he thought Stephen was trying to kill Jenny. Besides if he was just driving normally and did not know Stephen was standing out in the road, why drive so fast?

I don't think Peter is a clown,he truly thought that Jenny's life was in danger and the Platts just stood there and didn't try to help her.Since Stephen was Sarah's uncle,I think Adam'judgement is clouded by his feelings for her as he was not supportive towards his uncle at all nor offered to defend him.
