A new study put Baryonyx and Ceratosuchops through a micro-CT scanner to look at their braincases. And they found some interesting things in comparison to other theropods, and to other spinosaurids.

I dig the low music you have, the mixing is perfect. I also really appreciate how you make a clear distinction between study results and discussion/speculation. We need more of that distinction in science media.

Baryonyx is my favorite dinosaur, so nice to see it getting attention!

The brain will repurpose before it changes. We didn't grow a new chunk of brain for the new emotion of disgust, we just slapped it with the physical reaction. It is distinct and then again it is not.

Okay science nerds, keep ramming skulls though a scanner ; you're onto something

Realize that the difference of 2k and 3k Hz isn't much; in the scope of audio response that's only half an octave. Audio frequency response is logarithmic, and audio pressure (ie volume) is also logarithmic.

Irritator comes from a pterosaur rich formation from the same state where Tapejara (not pronounced tapeHara) comes from, Ceará. And we do have direct evidence of them eating pterosaurs, even though it's still uncertain whether it was hunted or scavenged. But their aptitude to lock on target could be useful for that as well as for fishing

Wow, this is a prey I'd never considered. Thanks for sharing that info!

I am very very certain that they did not hunt pterosaurs on a regular basis.

We have wading birds like cranes who have that type water hunting life style. Has any compared terrestrial cranes hunters with those that are aquatic hunters to see if this architectural follows through to same architectural out come due to environmental situations. It would go a long way to support this idea of water hunting in this study having that effect in this species is correct.

At least some of the musculature is similar. Bird brains though have a very different shape from other dinosaurs, so it's not quite as straightforward of a comparison.

Would it be possible to compare this with modern birds? Storches etc.

Bird brains (lol) have a unique shape which seems to have developed after flight. So animals super closely related to birds have closer to the ancestral dinosaur brain, but birds did their own unique thing.

Thumbs down. I listened through 5:20 and still no "bombshell".
