This is an episode from the third season of The Baseball Bunch in 1983 featuring recently-retired Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Fame first baseman Willie Stargell. This episode shows the proper way for a first baseman to cut off or let go throws from right field, as well as a segment of Stargell taking batting practice and discussing finding a comfortable rhythm at the plate. Stargell also gives out some of his famous hat stars and shows why he is one of the most universally beloved baseball heroes of his era.....Starring Johnny Bench and The Famous Chicken. Also includes Tommy Lasorda as "The Dugout Wizard." This was recorded off ESPN in the late 1980s.......

This show was awesome. Taught the fundamentals of the game and promoted teamwork. It was a good show to teach kids something special.

Can you imagine being an 8 year old boy and being next to Johnny Bench and Willie Stargell? IT IS LIKE RECEIVING SANTA CLAUS!

Two great players. The CRACK of Willlie's bat on the ball, loudest I ever heard and the towering shots. You just had to be there (Roberto, Willie and the Cobra), miss those days.

Possibly my first baseball game I went to , 1980 or so , I remember seeing Stargell hit a single off the wall at Riverfront. He hit it so hard it was bouncing off the wall before he even got out of the batters box. He was big and slow but I don't think Rickey Henderson could have gotten 2 out of that hit. Tom Seaver started for the Reds and I don't remember who started for Pittsburg but I recall Kent Tekulve came into the game eventually and I was happy to see him in person after watching him on TWiB. I tried to pitch that way after watching him but I couldn't throw straight !

He was! that windmill warmup swings was so unique and cool. He backed it up with tremendous power, hit for high average and was an above average defensive player. Never in my wildest imagination would I think the lumber co. Pirates would fall to such mediocrity. Jim nutting is the pirate owner. Joke in Pittsburgh is: PAY NUTTING...GET NUTTING. That's the pirates...worst team in the entire league.

The crack of his bat on the ball best sound in sports.

I did. It was everything you likely imagine it to be. Also, he was a hell of a nice man, period.

Man, the world was different. Everyone who became captain on my baseball team was just the best player, or most popular teamate. Certainly never the player who holds the interest of the team up the highest, sets the example for work ethic.... none of that crap.

Wish the grown-ass Yankees could have gotten Johnny out, in '76! Oh, wait! Cincinnati had an entire grown-ass Red Machine!

Did he teach the kids how to properly peddle drugs to your teammates and visiting players while appearing to be a sweet lovable teddy bear ?
