This is probably fun but it's not a "format," it's a different game. But the first line of playing only with basic lands is a legitimately good format.
I agree it’s a different game. Also I had the same thought that this was going to be “only basic lands” commander which I also like the idea of considering my current pod plays high power / CEDH all the time. A change in pace would be nice
Lol I was thinking about this. I do wish they'd errata Wastes to have a basic land type, but I suppose it'd make too many waves towards cards that care about "each basic land type"
As a non-MTG player but a card game enjoyer, I'd love to see a format where instead of using basic lands, you charged mana the same way the Dragonball Super TCG works. Any card in your deck can be played as energy/mana in your mana zone upside down. It counts as the color of the card. No more worry of bricky hands, but maybe forces you to use cards you don't want to use just to stay on curve
There is an idea ive been thinking up along the lines of basic mtg. The idea is that any cards with miltiple text abilities are banned. E.g. a creature with "trample" is fine but a card with "when this card etb...." is banned. Not sure how non creature spells would work though.
I think for both creatures and non-creatures, you'd basically need to limit each card to a single sentence of text. So something like Cancel (Counter target spell.) would be fine, but Absorb (Counter target spell. You gain 3 life.) wouldn't be. That should cover most of the complex spells in the game, though it does leave some edge cases. A card like Opt (Scy1. Draw a card.) would be banned, but a card like Deliberate (Scry 2, then draw a card) wouldn't. The simplest answer there would probably be to get rid of any cards with commas, since those tend to wrap up multiple effects into a single sentence. That isn't always true, but without judging on a case-by-case basis I think it's the simplest way to account for as many as possible. There are still some combined effects that slip through, such as Overrun, but unless you ban cards that use 'and' there isn't a way around that. Banning 'and' and 'then' might functionally accomplish the same thing as banning commas, though runs into similar case-by-case issues. I'd also note that Auras and Equipment are pretty much entirely absent in such a format, since they require multiple lines of rules text simply to have their Enchant X and Equip abilities listed. Planeswalkers are obviously out, as are the vast majority of Lands. Though only allowing basic lands in a basic format is pretty suitable. It's an interesting idea though, since it does really trim down how many effects a card can have. The best spells are those that do the most with the fewest words possible, rather than those that have multiple modes or are just keyword soup. It'd be ideal as a format for beginners, since each card would be very easy to parse and would only ever really do one thing.
Very rarely is going for 5 of any land without playing other lands the correct play. The idea is turn 1 non plain and then to blink it with each of the 5 plains you play to keep your opponent from developing their board.
I like it, but as usual I can't resist the urge to mess with the rules. This is basically Magic gin-rummy, so I'd rather have it be 10 lands and/or monocolored permanents. The blue/Island should be Boomerang, not FoW. And the black/Swamp is Coercion, not Thoughtseize.
There's more than one set of rules out there. After looking over both, my preferred effects are: Plains: draw a card; Island: bounce target permanent; Swamp: target player discards a card; Mountain: destroy target land; Forest; return target card from your graveyard to your hand. The Plains and Forest effects could be swapped (and are in the other rules set), but regrowth is more green while resurrection is more white, and draw cantrips exist in all colors. If Wastes were going to be added in, I think they should get a tap effect rather than an ETB: Tap two Wastes to play an additional land this turn.
Thought for sure this was a Lost in the Woods centric joke format. On that note: if you ever need to teach someone the importance of removal, build a deck that is 99 forests and 1 Lost in the Woods. Start with only LitW in your hand and let them go first. After they deck themselves, show/give them cards that they can add to their deck that could have let them easily beat the deck (so many are commons).
This is gonna have to be tweaked. One of the lands is gonna have to create actual card advantage. I can already tell by turn 7 or 8 its both players are gonna be in top deck mode with 0 or 1 cards in hand.
grabbed a bunch of basics from my cube and played a multiplayer version of this with a communal deck and graveyard with my wife, my brother, and his girlfriend. we all really enjoyed that! but I am curious to see how the 1v1 version plays
Can we add a rule where wastes have the ability to be every basic land type but not have the other type’s effects? Or an upkeep trigger where you can choose what basic type they are? So they don’t get the ETB affect like the others but they can help forward the board state. The wastes could also be used to discard them and change an opponents land type
My play group has also been throwing this idea around; to make wastes the "Uno's Wild Card" of this format. However, I like the idea that, because wastes produce colorless mana, and aren't a color, that they'd work more like a Skip your turn card, where instead of playing the waste, you give it to another player. On that player's turn, if they have another player's waste in their hand, they have to play that waste on it's owner's board, effectively "wasting" their turn and you get a delayed land drop, so you could effectively win by having 5 wastes
I think the flash speed is confusing a little bit. So is island the only, flash speed land drop? So someone plays a land, you discard 1 and play island to counter, which acts as your land drop on your opponents turn?? Or does that count as you immediately passing your turn back to them? Then if plains is also flash speed, I feel like it would get really complicated. Or is everything flash speed??? Could there be one big stack? Lol. Also what about colorless basic lands kinda sad they weren't included
Suppose you have a mono-island deck. You draw 1 card each turn, plus 2 from playing an island. You start with 5 or 6 islands in your hand (depending on whether you started or your opponent did). You can discard 2 islands to counter your opponent's land, then essentially draw 3 cards for turn and play 1. That means your opponent cannot play a single card while you maintain your hand size, so you will win unless your opponent also plays islands! Turns out all it takes to break the format is 1 card... Island is truly the most broken card
Did you literally not watch the video? All decks are the exact same. He explains that it's a 50 card deck with 10 lands of each type... why are you trying to meta game when it's an alternate game mode based on basic lands?
Why not add 10 wastes as well? Wastes do not count towards domain and you do not win with 5 wastes. You may treat any 3 wastes as any 1 basic land type to fulfill your win condition. Wastes have cascade, a player can not cascade more than once a turn, and if you resolve the cascade trigger the next land trigger you control can’t be countered this turn. Also I would add the rule if playing a land would result in a trigger fizzling for plains, forest, mountain, swamp, or wastes you may put a card from your hand on the bottom of your deck and draw a card. You may still draw this card even if you have no cards in hand to put on the bottom your deck. Lastly I would add snow lands by replacing 5 of each basic with its snow counterpart. Snow lands enter tapped and as a result they have no land triggers. However on any of your other turns you may untap the snow land before your land drop for that turn, doing so will trigger the snow land’s ability that turn. Tapped snow lands will also have their abilities triggered if destroyed by a mountain and snow lands can enter tapped or untapped if blinked by a plains. Plains can also blink enemy tapped snow lands, doing so will have the snow land enter untapped without their ability triggering. If your opponent blinks one of your tapped snow lands you may treat it as a fizzled land trigger by putting a card from your hand on the bottom of your library to draw a card. (You may still draw a card even if you don’t have a card in hand to put on the bottom of your library.)
@@robertherbst9487 If you do test it, please let me know how it affects the game and if there are any game modifications you make to remedy any potential balance issues that come up.
Can we get a basic land commander format goin? Call it commoner your deck is 50 cards like in video but u pick one common rarity creature as your commander. Same goal jus adds one common of choice in a command zone to spice things up.
Back when I use to make youtube videos, I was actually thinking about making a video protesting basic islands being banned in Pauper by having myself and 3 other players playing a mock game with just basic lands as our Pauper decks. So this is nothing new to me.
destroying lands is always a yes yes , why white was and is second only to blue. Balance Armageddon! free tip, hold lands! insert trippy Joel, epiphany emoji Booooosh
I feel like you could add some spice by giving the hand the "Exodia" win, one of each land in hand you also win. This game seems too annoying to remember though.
i find it amazing that there is no other spell that can allow targeting to discard a basic land. Feels weird that the basic lands only do one thing except blue, each color should have a "cylcing" effect along with an ETB. This feels like "copium." Just play a different game with different cards.
I disagree with the voting banner splashed before the video... i believe it is irresponsible to vote unless you are keeping up with the issues, if you do not pay attention (or much attention) you should abstain...
What relevance does this comment have to the voting banner? Are you the police on who is fit to vote or not? Did someone suggest voting ignorantly? Just how sure are you of your OWN knowledge, concerning the election? Are people voting differently than you automatically uneducated and, therefore, shouldn’t vote? Stop making something out of nothing. Enjoy the video. 🙄🙄🙄
@@elorrambasdo5233 Yeah, she's the right choice if you want more wars, violence in the streets, rising food costs, rising inflation, government crack downs on free speech, etc. 🙄
Some people don't have the luxury of sitting around in front of a computer screen getting spooned political opinions. Some of us grind to keep.our families afloat. I have every right to vote as much as you. Not being able to follow the discussion 100% of the time doesn't mean our lives are inconsequential or that the matters being voted on don't affect us.
Are people really willing to do this over proxying cards like people are willing to waste their time going down this road of playing this type of game because they are so brainwashed by capitalism that they won't go print their own cards so they can unlock the rest of Commander that's out there they've become so sanitized to the idea that you're only allowed to play with what you have paid for that we're making up stuff like this? It's because of these formats is the reason we have Commander now because we got so tired of 60 card magic.
