I’ve been doing a lot of research on mice and i’ve made many lists and drawings of my plan and this video was very helpful for extra tips! Could you do a video on how to convince your parents to let you get mice? (for me and any other viewers that still live with their parents)
@@lilyjones4289 Yeah my mom said she hated hamsters and when I got mine she fell in love. I’m positive the same thing will happen with mice but I haven’t found a way to convince her yet. I have a plan on everything I need to buy/make now I just need her onboard to help me make the cage and take me out to buy the proper supplies.
I made a hole list, every thing I would need to buy were it was from and how much it cost. I then set a budget mine was 300$ for cage stuff, the cage, wheels and a water bottle. Then I put my 300$ in an envelope to prove u could pay for these mice on my own. I put an extra 50 to prove I could pay for bedding and food for a while. I’m not some overly spoiled kid this was my money from like three Christmas and birthdays and I rarely buy things for my self so that’s how I saved up this much. It also really helped because I had my mom on board so we just had to convince my dad. Hope this helps!
I have 1 male mouse that was bred as a feeder mouse for reptiles, my cousin was picking up snake food for me and when I saw him I just couldn't do it. He is now my little desk buddy, he does live alone but I interact with him every day. His cage is only 200 square inches right now but I do plan to upgrade him, and he does have 2 hide houses, a 6.5" wheel, chews, and a tube to run in around in. I have had him a month and a half now and he is such a sweetheart. 🤍 I know he may not live long because he was meant to be a feeder mouse but I want to give him a good life while I can 🤍
@Xmas_Soph_Ofc🎄 lol there are thousands of feeder mice out there, a snake won't die because it missed a feeding anyway. Frozen mice are better to feed snakes and reptiles anyway
@@burntbeansoup it should really become standard practice for breeders to keep their snakes on frozen because the new owners may have trouble finding live feeders, and they can be dangerous as well
I feed my mice a mix of lab pellets, (for nutrients) and birdseed, mealworms, pasta, and Cheerios (for enrichment) and I scatter feed them, and when possible I hide it in like tubes for them to have to hunt for it.
VERY useful, thank you! We have wild mice in our house and we had an exterminator come and seal all around the house so they wont come in anymore, but they also wanted an extra 300 to poison the ones inside. I wasn’t too keen on it, and decided this was the perfect opportunity to show our kid what it is to have a pet (I had always refused, by principle) without having to buy one from stores or breeders, and without capturing one from the wild. This way, we keep these alive and will release them in nature when spring comes (Canada is cold in the winter) andin the meantime, our kid can learn and enjoy a rare chance to have a pet, even though it is temporary. I also won’t feel bad releasing them in nature, as this is where they actually come from!! (Unlike pet store or breeder ones). Win-win ! So thanks for your amazing tips and we’ll do our best to follow them. I don’t think we’ll have the chance to handle them though… they are very skittish, being truly wild ones. But that’s ok.
Another great informative, interesting, and awesome video! I really appreciate all your effort to spread correct care information, and SO many mice future and present will benefit from this.
Thank you for the video. I got very excited when you said you were going to include a list of mice-safe foods in the description (sadly it wasn't there). I would really appreciate a good source on this since it has been hard to determine what is safe for them. My mice didn't really like the regular carrots and broccoli options, so I have been looking for different foods to try. PS: they are lab rescues so maybe they are just not very used to fresh fruits and veggies.
i love your videos so much! i used to have a bin cage that was a little less than minimum for my two mice, but i got a 55 gallon tank for my birthday just because i started watching your videos!! 😊😊❤️
Hello from Portland Oregon, USA! I recentley bought two male mice and lucky for me I pretty much already set up their home the way you described in your video. Thank-you so much for all the great info and I look for to watching more of your videos! Cheers!
This was very helpful, thanks! I just got a couple of female mice and you've given me a few good ideas for toys and such to keep them occupied while I work.
With an 18 minute video no wonder you're exhausted, I'll bet that took like two hours to film! I recently did a long video myself (13 mins) and that was a whole hour and half just on filming A-roll, oh the joys of making content 😅 your video turned out great though! This will be a great starter resource for new mice owners, so it was definitely energy well spent ☺️
Currently watching this while holding and snuggling one of my mice who was recently diagnosed with lymphoma. Health problems are no joke with mice and sometimes its the sweetest ones who are affected 😢 She's taking steroids for it though and they have helped a lot
I just found a small decently young mouse, I saved it from my cat but it was really little and didn’t seem too old so I picked it up and now it’s in a make-shift habitat for the night, I will try to raise it until I can release it in the wild since it is a wild mouse.
When I got my first mouse I was a little afraid of them. (long story why I ended up wanting them) when I went to the pet store and picked her out, the pet store worker tried to pick her up by her tail! Even though I didn't know much about them I knew this was bad, like obviously! It's a pet of their spine! So even though I never held a mouse before when I saw him reach for the tail I just scooped her up myself. Fell in love with her immediately. Haven't bonded much with her tank mate yet but she is super friendly. That's a great example of how some are handleable and some are not ya know?
I own snakes and recently got a BP from a breeder who fed live, he wasn’t transferring to frozen thawed so after abt a month I had to purchase a live mouse for him. He refused to eat that as well lol so I was left with a pet mouse! Once I realized little dude was here to stay I ordered him so much stuff, and now aside from needing more mice for company I’m proud to say his living conditions are supreme and he is very loved lol😅
So I just got a baby fancy mouse from Craigslist he is a baby I'm not sure how old tho, he is very shy and is always hiding I want to bound with him but he is always hiding and I don't want to bug him, do you have any tips?
My mice are 2 sisters. I got them back in August. Bambi and bamboo are spottet fancy mice and live in Ikea's biggest bin. I think it's 80x50cm? They have 20 cm of bedding a 30 cm wheel, sprays and lots of different treats yet so far they like the mealworm the best. They eat half rat pellets and half mouse seed mix. They are both in the recommend fat, fiber and protein. I give lots of hanging houses and ropes but I find that they don't like hammocks so I remove them since the cage ain't that bit. Bambi and bamboo are my first mice, I still live with my parents so I cant do everything since I already have 3 other hamsters with big enclosures aswell.
Hi! i have a question: i have had a lot of rats in the past few years. But now i'm looking at the animal shelter website and i came upon 4 male mice that need a home. I do not have as much time as i had when i still had rats, so do these animals need a lot of socialisation? and how long would you say they need playpin time?
Thank you soooooo much my birthday is next week and thank to you I’ll be able to get rats with all the research I’ve done and what and what not to do thank you so much because you’re my main research supplier thank you
My cat was playing with a baby mouse yesterday i saved him intime and kept him alive all night if he makea it till Thursday im buying mice stuff and not just the basic i have
For a different substrate can I use succulent dirt? I’m planning on using kiln dried pine shavings and toilet paper as the main substrate and I want to make a dig box with dirt but I don’t know which dirt is safe for them. An answer from anyone (not just Emiology) would be very helpful ❤️
Sorry I don’t know enough about succulent soil. You can either use coco fibre or topsoil that has no extras added to it like fertilisers etc make sure it’s completely organic.
@@lilyjones4289 Where I live kiln dried pine is my only option. There is not 1 store that sells paper based bedding. I follow this youtube of someone that lives in Brazil (like me) and she uses safe wood shavings and toilet paper as the bedding. I though it was fine if I didn’t have anything else to use. (I’m the original commenter this is just my other account)
So I have about 13 mice now before you say it I didn't buy them or let them into my home lol yep they wild mice I have caught as my landlord put down poison and I just can't let them die such a horrible death so I caught them via a mouse trap I have a 10inch tank I got and the wood shavings and I'm getting some hampster wood stuff lol but what else should I do for them till summer when I will be releasing them near the river in hopes they will be able survive its winter now need some help I won't be handling them other then with a glove on when I have to clean out there poop lol
I'm super lucky that my vet gives over the phone insight because my lone guy Beans has a peanut allergy of all things hahaha! Poor baby he loves them but can't have them or he breaks out in hot spots!
Hi I just bought 2 baby female mice and I have a temporary cage whilst they are so young but want to upgrade to a bigger one! I’m worried now though, they are from the same litter and were sold to me as a pair but is it kinder for me to introduce and add another female mouse? Also they are so cute, inquisitive as well! Great video thanks
It’s okay but it does dry out very quickly which can be irritating to their respiratory systems. It’s also not the best for odour control. I’d give them it as a digging box instead of the main bedding 😊
Hi! I have a question, you mentioned a dig box, and I have tried this twice with coco soil (not sure what it's called, it's originally for reptiles) and it went moldy after like two days both times. Is this normal? Is there a way to avoid this? Thanks!
If anyone can help me, please do. My cat brought me a mouse that was still alive and I don't want to kill it. It's a house mouse, and I don't know what to do.
please can u advise a substrate to use, we currently use tiny friends eco bedding as they didnt like the stay fresh, but its smelly and has bad reviews on pets at home so looking for what i can use. they like the consistency of the tiny friends for digging
soooo... i ab-tamed three maybe more wild field mice and one is around a mouth ish old and every time i try to anything like give them new food or water it trys to get into my hand with full commitment. its adorable and i kinda thinking i might be able to train it but then again i dont want to get too attached... which seems impossible with the amount of trust this WILD mouse has given me. ive got two others that just hang out but they are around 3- maybe 7 months. they are a little less want to be handled witch is why im confused why this little one trusts me so. meh
how can I tell the difference between a neutered and un neutered male mouse? I have searched high and low to see what the difference is It kinda sounds silly that I don't know the difference 😅 but I am just curious!
Just wanted to add on, neutering is the act of removing the testes so that animals 1. Can’t reproduce 2. Have less aggression that may be caused by hormones and pheromones. Not all vets do it on small animals because it is risky putting them under sometimes since they’re so tiny (age also affects how dangerous it could be). It can still be done though, and sometimes shelters or rescues will neuter/spay animals before they let you adopt them. Usually any mice coming from pet stores/breeders/rescues will be intact and not neutered.
*"Me watching this video only moments after i rescued a mouse from my cat"* I just want to give it enough food & care before i release him/her into a far away place. Any tips?
I am help healing a hurt deer mouse or grasshopper mouse I'm trying to find the right care for him while he heals edit: but I'm pretty sure his two back legs are paralyzed
Hi I got two mice in October as youngsters but one of them was grey with a pink nose and has now changed fur colour is this normal she is now a like a sand colour with black fur around her nose and legs a lot like a Siamese cat. Is this normal I’m a bit worried?
That’s nothing to worry about and normal for Siamese or colourpoint beige mice. They’ll start out usually a solid colour as babies and then when they’re adults they will get their darker points in around the nose and feet. Their coats will also look different shades in winter and summer so don’t worry if it appears darker based on the seasons too ☺️
Hi, maybe nobody's going to respond to this but i was wondering if you could put 2 females in a 29 gallon tank with essentials so my point is can I ONLY put 2 females?
I'm way too late to this video, but I entered into a partnership to co-own a reptile shop and we breed mice and rats. Keeping them in racks has been a necessary evil but we try and give them daily interaction and different enrichments. We only keep trios in each bin and rotate males. We also change 100% of their bedding and scrub their tubs religiously once a week. Now to the question. My partner has always used pine. There is one whole rat that is being effected by it and I've convinced him to change one bin to Aspen for them but we cant afford to keep them all on Aspen. Heat treated and dust extracted pine is the option hes been going with. Is there another option that is still cost effective in bulk that is safe for mice and rats? Hes not opposed to switching if I can find something but no luck so far. Does anyone one left in here have any suggestions? I know they're feeders, but I want to respect their lives while they're here.
Dust extracted and kiln dried shavings are fine for rats and mice ☺️ However those that don’t have the best genetics / health can be a lot more sensitive to it especially if they can’t get away from it. Aspen is probably the best bet I would recommend hemp however I’ve found that to be quite dusty recently
@@Emiology thank you so much for your advice! We try to keep our genes pretty varied so we dont have many issues but that one albino rat is just so gooey eyed. Luckily, my partner cares just as much for them as I do, so we try to keep the door open to improve our husbandry when we can. I've been working on breeding projects to make sure they're also pet quality, so we can offer them for pets if someone is interested. (Especially the rats. They're one of my favorite animals, period) I think its important that we treat all our animals lives with respect, even our feeders, so we want to try to do our best for them. Thank you so much!
I just wanted to say that this Christmas I got rats and rats are my dream pet and I literally got rats and one of them is named crumble and the other one's name is Jack Frost
What if I got a group of four girl mice and one by one they have been dying due to old age (I have had them for almost 2 and a half years). I have two left and it seems like the brown one is losing a lot of energy. My black mice is super energetic still. Since they are all so old it has me too scarred to introduce more mice in fear they hurt my older ones. I want to make sure that when one passes the other isn't all alone and by herself but am scared of how the young mice will treat the older mice.
The stress from being a lone mouse for however long is more prolonged than a few days of stress from intros. Most elderly mice unless they’re seriously ill enough that they don’t have any qhwalitt of life and should probably be pts are fine during intros, if you get young 8 week old babies they won’t pose much of a risk and they’ll have each other to play with and annoy. Older company is also an option as they may be calmer but as they’re bigger it may be more stressful. If the two you have left and one is looking like they may last a bit longer I think they’ll be fine, the best you can do is try it and take it really slow ☺️
I've tried 3 times to bond my mouse, and shes just so aggressive towards other mice, I had one successful bonding just to find out the pet store gave me a boy and he got my mouse pregnant and she nearly died from it because one of the fetuses got stuck in her birth canal, I rubbed her belly and around her hips and it came right out, unfortunately none of her babies survived but I'm just so glad I didn't lose her😢 it was terrifying seeing her like that, pink stuff was coming out of her eyes and there was some sort of fluid, could be the amniotic fluid but I wasn't 100% sure leaking out of her, I sat on my bed with her on a towel sitting in my lap, rubbing her head and belly and she is still here and she's almost 3❤️ this happened about a year ago
And the store where I got what I thought was a her came from a local breeder so it was really frustrating to find out he was a boy but it was meant to be and I love him😂❤️
Does anybody know about mouse body language? I've had my gorgeous boy a few weeks now and he is so friendly and comes to his name, has been crawling over my hand since week 1, seems really happy. The only thing I'm confused by is a few times when I've been talking to him and had my hand in his cage his tail has vibrated. I looked online and it said this was a sign of annoyance but he hasn't shown even an ounce of even attempting to be aggressive, he's super friendly. I haven't owned mice since I was at school so any advice would be appreciated x
It’s a sign of annoyance / aggressive telling you to back off. Males will often do it in their space and cage as they’re quite territorial so just be careful not to push him too much when he does this
@@Emiology Thank you for your response. Just seemed strange cos he generally seems happy to see me, but I'll definitely give him space if I see his tail vibrating
I don’t want to make you mad or anything. I doubt I’ll ever get mice though. But I don’t have that kinda $$ anyway because I’m 10. I do have like 40 rats though as I breed them for reptile food. I hope that doesn’t offend you or anything. We also have a ton of snakes so they need to eat to.
Mice are such funny creatures, but I think the biggest issue for me will be keeping mice while having a snake that eats mice. I feed him frozen thawed stuff, but like it would be weird to consider some mice more valuable because they're pets than the ones I feed my snake. So, like it's kinda weird.
My mouse keeps eating her group mates. She is fed daily and shouldnt be canablising them. I'm afraid of adding mice to her cage again because shes done this twice (there was a year gap between these occurrences) over 5 mice died at her claws. I know shes depressed, she tries to get out of her cage everyday but im afraid she'll just keep eating them.
2:55 I don't understand very well this point, you need to give your last mouse to someone that has already a group of them wtf or to live with someone that also has another group of mouses but in a different cage ? I mean, it's not really possible for most people, if i'm a solitary person or even if i live in a collocation i can't just change home or ask my colloc to adopt mouses so my mouse keep having social interactions, a move of house isn't a casual thing.
Im not sure what there is to misunderstand? If you have a single mouse you need to either get more more or rehome the mouse to be introduced into another group of mice. If you don’t think that will be possible I recommend not getting mice to begin with
Yo I watch this when I captured a mouse and she talked for so long it chewed through the cage I had to use a red Solo cup and a Rick and Morty poster to get it and hade to put it out side it's name was merey Jane 😢
Although I have a massive problem with keeping any animals captured or caged, I think you are bring great education and value to these tiny creatures fir the public. So good for you. I just believe all animals like us deserve freedom 😔
I have 2 female mice and I feel like a bad owner because I didn’t know they needed so much enrichment. I need a new everything and need to stop feeding them from a bowl. But can you please have a list of what they can or cannot eat!?
I’ve always housed my mice (I have 3) in seprate cages due to me having 2 males and a female as I am deathly afriaid of them dying. And they are happy and healthy this way.
@@Emiology woah woah woah I don’t want to fight. And btw, I just rescued this mouse from a horrible home and she’s still settling in. She’s always been alone. I may get another one for her but idk if they will fight or not and I can’t afford another habitat if they do
Hi! I do agree with Emi you should probably get another female for your mouse so she can have a friend. If you are worried about not having enough space in the cage for 2 mice I recommend getting a bin from walmart. I got my bin for around 30$ and used wire on the top for air. Just make sure the wire is spaced close enough so they can't squeeze through. As for introducing a new mouse to your current mouse im no expert, as I just got my mice a month or 2 ago. But please please get her a friend she'll be much happier since mice are social creatures. I hope everything is well with your lil friends (:
My sister in law rescued a mouse being sold as snake feed from Facebook market place and gave it to my daughter and I to keep and love. Never had a mouse before and have been doing lots of research. I found your video very helpful. Thank you so much for your channel.
@@TeelDove777 I've got my girls from local breeders, mainly found through mouse chat groups. As for the sex, adult mice are pretty easy to tell apart (male mice have, umm, rather large balls) but when they're still young, you really need someone experienced to tell the difference.
I can't remember if I've commented this on your videos before, but a neat little puzzle box you can make yourself is from cheese triangles boxes... cut out a couple of random size/shape holes and put the treats inside... the cardboard will mulch down after they've finished with the puzzle.
