As someone who's just starting to really play Tekken, unfamiliarity has been the biggest issue. I'm sure that sounds obvious but it's on a whole other level compared to when I started out with Street Fighter. Most of my online matches in Tekken have thus far consisted of my opponents just hitting buttons in my face as I try to guess what's going to happen next and I usually just end up eating a bunch of damage. These videos are really helping me a lot though. They are truly appreciated.

Well, I was playing Thrill Kill before trying to actually get into Tekken. It's good to play a game where I actually have to think about what I am doing, rather than spamming buttons and hoping something effective happens. Even if I have to break a habit or two, just to enjoy it. I feel like the Seventh game tries to mash all the great elements from various fighting games and make it Tekken-viable.

To sum it up, experience is key. Don't think you're going to just pick up a game and all of a sudden be ready for EVO...there's levels to this shit. For some they pick up on stuff quicker than others but you still have to put the work if you wanna get good

Good vid bro and I totally agree with ur point about knowledge. It's truly a double edged sword - its amazing that u can discover new things or even just play new characters (cause there are so many) but on the other hand, unless ur name is JDCR or something like that, u are gonna get hit by a move, that u were unfamiliar with. Not because of ur lack of skill or something like that, but simply because u didnt know any better, and that can be truly frustrating.

To people saying this would intimidate new players: anyone who doesn't want to know this stuff will eventually quit the game anyway. They'll spend a couple of weeks in ranked, spamming unsafe moves and braindead shit, maybe get to green ranks, get destroyed, and never play the game again. Despite T7's new popularity, it's still a niche game, it does not give instant gratification, or reward short term thinking. In the case of new players, let them be intimidated, the ones that stick will push forward and improve.

i havent played sine 99. i really killed it with paul, yosemitsu, king, hwoarang and bryan (in order). and then there wasnt any guides online to folow! I think you should be able to know every characters move if you want to destroy them easier. Is there any of the players in T7 you would recommend playing or should i play the ones i mastered best in T1-3? or should i stick with my theory to get good at every player? I think i have a chance to get good again with some practice :)

Don't think Kaz has any options aside from block on the wall horsetamer setup, nor can Lars cockscrew it. I'm almost sure only parrys & reversals are the only other option. There may be there are a few low profile stance(s) or evasive move/attack(s) at best. Still a great risk/reward for Wang. And if you can buffer in a chicken on the characters that you can, imagine the mindfuck.

(5 minutes in) Just what I needed. I wanna get into Tekken but there's no opposition here in Japan outside of arcades. In any case; yesterday I managed to get one match after about an hour of searching online. This Bruce player put me in the corner and kept kneeing me over and over and I just thought to myself "I have absolutely no clue what to do in this situation". All my go-to options such as sidestep, backdash, jab, low/high-crush and counter were shut down by these repeated mid hitting knees. There's probably some obvious solution to this that I just couldn't think of because of my inexperience.

Nah. After the second hit of the string he'd always be just outside of grab range, or at least that's what I thought at the time. Same reason a jab wouldn't have worked.

Just a little hint. You shouldn't tell new players they will only ever be good at Tekken after they familiarize every single detail a fighter has to offer. It destroys their drive to even try, as it seems they will never be able to win against someone with more experience. Someone who understands his character might be able to beat some other guy he's never played before, just on his own merits. I understand what you're getting at, but experience plays into every single thing one does. Framedata and all the minor specifics which play into the game will not interest new players. If I were to take a look at another fighter, I wouldn't wanna know that Ryu's Shoryuken is -17 on block or whatever. I would want to get a feel of the game and what make's it differentiate from the rest. People who just start out will not have a major advantage if I tell them Kings Giant Swing is applicable in 1 frame after another move. But tell them he is a grappler and has a weak low-play and they might understand his basics and what to watch out for. On the other hand, if these tutorials are meant to be for people who already play tekken and are starting out to get on the higher levels of play, then consider this little wall of text as void :P Anyway, I really appreciate what you do, Aris. Keep having fun and the people watching you will enjoy themselves. That didn't sound as creepy when I thought it...

DimebagVision its the GODDAMN truth. i know because of Street fighter V, I still get fucked up by the online, but at least now I know: this shit works against me but is unsafe as shit and will get punished against other players, or this guy is good, he plays like its supposed to. however, I prefer watching fighting games nowadays lol

Reptile4077 you're selling newcomers short a bit, I think. I'm sure a lot of people would find this information quite encouraging and helpful. Also, if you're the type of person who DOES find the notion of extensive research discouraging, fighting games are not for you. That wouldn't be Aris' fault :p

I am pretty new to playing Tekken properly and I understand everything he is saying. I think you're referring to people who can't play/understand video games in general. Aris even says himself plenty of times, these are all simple concepts.

@MannyBiggz

Actually, this is very much a part of Tekken's basics. The fact that it comes off as such an advanced tactic is kind of an issue for newcomers to the competitive side of the series. Aris touched on that in the last tutorial before this one.

Assuming Bandai Namco knows how complicated Tekken is, why - oh why - do they insist adding so many characters? If there were half of them I would be happy. But there's just way too many for a pretty casual player like me to learn all of them.
