The low-level jet (LLJ) is a concentrated band of fast-moving air located within the lower levels of the atmosphere. Forming primarily at night over regions like the Great Plains of the United States, the LLJ rapidly transports warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico northward. This influx of moisture and differing air masses generates instability and increases the available energy for storms.
The LLJ also influences severe weather by creating strong wind shear. Wind shear occurs when winds change speed and direction with height. This wind shear provides a key ingredient - rotation - that can eventually be tilted upwards within a storm, leading to the potential for tornado formation.
