The BASSO Venta - A perfect frameset to upgrade

Start with a great frame, upgrade as you can. This is the bike for that mantra. The frame represents a great quality platform for upgrading wheels, tyres, etc, knowing you are building upon a bike with great characteristics, and precision. We think this could be the best value road bike on the market right now, for those looking for race like handling in a more cosy fit.
We got this bike from the UK distributors, Chicken Cycle Kit. We got the wheels from Upgrade Bikes. They had no knowledge this review was being done. The build was for a customer of ours who commissioned a bike with a tight budget.
The Build:
Basso Venta 105
105 Disc Groupset
Reynolds ARX41 Wheelset
Pirelli P-Zero TLR tyres 30c
Filmed in the Longsleddale Valley, Cumbria.

Hi I really appreciate these videos ! After doing extensive research on your and hambinis channels I have completely lost my desire to throw money on a BMC bike and rather give my money for a brand who actually takes bike building more seriously and get equal or better bike for much less money.

Good to see a real bike review with pros and cons... and not just another marketing and sales appraisal why you should buy this bike at any cost. I am looking at exactly this blue model at the moment, trying to hit the BUY button, but now I am hesitating because of the heavy stock wheels. Didn't know that from the Basso homepage. Thanks for the good review!

My Basso Palta frameset arrived, and though it is very nice, it isn't totally without issues. The angled upper headset bearing seat isn't flat enough and needs to be surfaced. The bearing can rock slightly in one direction. Also the derailleur tab, which is removable, uses three bolts which are slightly misaligned. Bolting down all three carelessly would be a bad idea.

Paul, great to see this. Properly finished frame combined with a set of lighter wheels as the first and most important upgrade. As you often point out that’s the heart of a bike, all else are tweaks in comparison. Great to see Basso, originally highly regarded for their steel frames, now being carried through to their carbon frames. Much to be said for Italian SME’s that do take pride in their output. ‘Big enough to nail it and small enough to care’. Great show case where it’s deserved. Sure your customer will be delighted. Proper Job 👍👏……… Edit since posting interesting to see the wider experience of others so I guess the jury’s out. I don’t believe 100% perfect should be a unicorn, rather a minimum industry standard (well 99. Something of the time) and that’s why these vids play such an important part in independently informing potential customers and cajoling the wider industry to get its collective finger out. Cheers Paul 👍
@Mapdec

Thank you. I am really starting to feel that somehow we need to get attention to the SMEs actually making frames, rather than the ones strapping parts onto a repainted frame from a catalogue.

Coming from recumbent cycling I bought a Basso Venta last October. Having no experience of upright bikes I don’t know if my opinion is worth much but I found this bike lovely to cycle. From the first day on my new Basso Venta I was cycling with my usual 26km/ph club group that I usually cycled my recumbent. I took to it very well on the flats and uphills, I was a bit wobbly on the downhills but that was more me than the bike, I soon got used to it. One of the things that attracted me to Basso was the fact that they make their own frames in their own factory in Italy unlike a lot of brands. The only thing was that I felt the reach was very slightly to long so I decided to have a bike fit which confirmed it was only very slightly to big for me. In all honesty it was fine but to satisfy my curiosity I bought a Look 765 Optimum+ in a size small, only picked it up yesterday so I have to try it out yet. I would highly recommend the Basso brand. I also must add that anytime I contacted Basso before and after I bought their bike their customer service was excellent. Thank you for your excellence video again.

I absolutely totally agree with your review. I’m 60 and 92 kgs at 6 foot. Still active and I too ride a motorcycle 🤣. I love the venta. I have the matt silver 56inch frame. Spent my money on Ultegra Dgi and Mira TC37 rims on cinturato Pirelli tyres. I fitted Disc brakes too. Also using superzero carbon handlebars and sitting on a SMP dynamic seat. Bloody comfortable riding for an active old fart and it’s an easy geometry/frame to live with at my age, but I still give it a bit of heave to help my cardiovascular health. Well done on a very honest review. I’ve had my venta for about 4 years now and no problems and still enjoy my riding time. Definitely worth a look. It’s something different and made in Italy. Great value for money👍

Interested in your analysis of the Basso Venta . I have been riding a Basso Astra for the past year or so . Beautifully finished . SRAM Rival groupset works well . In house carbon wheels as is the carbon frame . Generally handles extremely well but a bit twitchy up front in a cross wind . Hardly anyone seems to know about Basso compared to the other famous Italian brands. It is good to have a small company who manufacture most things on the bike bar the groupset and tires .

I suppose I am an American MAMIL. I'm turning 63 in two weeks, 182cm and 74Kg. Though my reconstructed ankle can handle running just fine, I can no longer run pain free due to having little cartilage left in my knees and a mildly impinged hip. So I've returned to cycling. My preferred steed is Italian steel, an Offician Battaglin San Luca with full Campy Potenza, Deda post, stem and bars, and Ursus Ivar wheels. TThe San Luca rides and handles very much like the Basso described here. It is a rim brake frame, so I've stuck with aluminum wheels. For my riding style, quick but rarely over 50 Kph, this bike is ideal. I can understand what this customer is after, and I hope the Basso delivers.

Fitted with basso carbon seat post (comes with substantial aluminium one) , carbon one piece bars and stem (Handsling), carbon railed Fizik saddle, Adey Dent 50mm carbon wheels c xray spokes (you should check them out!). Carbon bottle cages. Ultegra groupset mechanical. Total weight 7.5kg. Thats 1kg lighter than my 15 year old pinarello fp quattro. Which incidentally had its 1st new bottom bracket this year!!!. Basso feels much faster and snappier than pinarello. Thinking of getting a disc version.

Not saying it's a bad bike, just moaning about the state of the industry as a whole. Bonkers. Hey Paul, with all due respect, why are we so concerned about spacers under the handlebar stem? It sounds like one of those silly "unwritten rules" that has infested the cycling community. I wish we could all graduate from grade school and stop obsessing over how I wear my sunglasses, how tall my socks are, and how many spacers I have. These comments are not directed at you, but generally.
@Mapdec
@Mapdec Год назад
It’s a great question. Fewer spacers will eliminate a fair bit of flex and torsion. It’s also important to balance the front/rear weight distribution. Putting the load of the riders weight closer to the fulcrum of the top headset bearing can really improve front wheel tracking. The heavier the rider the more noticeable this is. This is actually a pretty good subject for a vid. The compromise between fit and handling.

Sorry, what? A full carbon (!) non-aero bike with 105 - with upgraded carbon (!) wheels - that weighs 8.6 kg???!!! And costs 2.900 £, without the new wheels? So the same weight as an Aluminium (!) Van Rysel EDR AF ULTEGRA with Aluminium (!) wheels from Decathlon for 1.399 EUR? What the hell did Basso do with this frame? Is it solid carbon? Is the paint 5 mm thick? Sorry, but not even disc brakes excuse this weight... The Van Rysel with some better wheels will be lighter and probably faster and you'd still have 1.000 £ left... The Decathlon equivalent to this bike would be the EDR CF 105 Disc which weighs in at 8.2 kg with Aluminium wheels from Fulcrum for 2.149 EUR, so you'll get that easily under 8 kg with some proper wheels. I fail to see the point to buy this bike in the fist place, let alone spend money to upgrade it...
@Mapdec
@Mapdec Год назад
That’s ok. You go and play on your shaky, flexy, wonky Decathlon bike being used to hang a more expensive groupset from to help it sell. You can easily make things light. It’s making them stiff and confidence inspiring that brings speed and fun. You’ll get it when you ride them.
@christianb.1028
@christianb.1028 Год назад
@@Mapdec There's no doubt you know way more about bikes than me, that's a fact, but have you ever actually ridden one of those better specced Decathlon bikes? I had the Van Rysel in the 105 version, which is the same frame as the Ultegra, for 2 years (still lighter than the Basso with the stock wheels...) and put thousands of km on it, so I'm not talking out of my ass here. There is nothing shaky or flexy about that frame at all, on the contrary, it's rather stiff. Wheels and tires are crap (just like with the Basso...), which I replaced, but the frame and the rest of the bike is absolutely indestructible (Alumium handle bars, seatpost ect., all rather on the heavy side). It's probably being sold in the tens-of-thousands and you get a life time (!) warranty on it. That said I have way more confidence in Decathlon QC than in Basso's... But don't just believe me: Your fellow RU-vid-colleague Francis Cade, who is no doubt a very experienced cyclist, rode an even cheaper version from Decathlon and had nothing but praise for it for the price point. He certainly didn't complain about it being flexy. And as a matter of fact, I do know nicer bikes (nothing really fancy, but still). Right now I ride a Giant TCR Advanced 1 (rim brake) from 2018 with Winspace wheels (7,3 kg without pedals...). The Giant feels allround better than the Van Rysel, no doubt, but it's certainly not stiffer... And I very much doubt that the Basso Venta differs much in terms of quality from the Giant TCR (if so, please elaborate), it being pretty much the same price point. I'm a slow descender, because I don't want to die, but I've done over 70 km/h on both and there was no significant difference in confidence. The bike was never the limiting factor, that was always me. If an aero bike is heavy, fine. I've gotten used to that. But an allround race bike? I'm not saying it's "bad", I'm sure you wouldn't praise it if it was, but it is still damn heavy. And if I have to spend an extra 1.000 £ for wheels just to get my already expensive carbon race bike under 9 kg then I think this is not acceptable. There are full on gravel bikes lighter than this thing.

There is a lot here. Much of it answered in previous vids. Keep watching. I had a good look round the Van Rysal stand at the 312. All looks very standard. I have ridden most CAAD models from the caad 4 so I am well versed in aluminium. Alu can be light and stiff, but it’s also harsh. They make good Crit bikes. When you have a bike that glides and feels sturdy it makes a huge difference. It’s like driving fast in a motorway in an old Corsa compared to cruising in an X5.

@@Mapdec Thank you for the reply, I appreciate it! I have no doubt the Venta will be the nicer ride. The alumnium Van Rysels are a lot of things, but subtle is certainly not one of them. I used an alu seat post with no setback, so I know... But still: When modern full carbon bikes weigh close to 90s steel bikes bikes, then I think there's something wrong... But that's my opinion, to each their own.

@@christianb.1028 it’s ok. Weight is a relatively small element of a bikes speed and handling these days.

He is about 180cm. Was riding with him today. He flew down the descents like a lunatic.
