The glory days of the 70's miniseries and the forging of America collide in this adaptation of John Jakes's pot-boiling bestseller. Bosoms heave! Family fortunes are found and lost! Beloved character actors wear ridiculous wigs! Hands are mutilated and hearts are broken in "The Bastard"!

Stuck in quarantine for over a month and desperately searching for something to watch because I've seen everything and then I find...The Bastard! I avidly read the whole series when I was a teenager and then enjoyed the movies and guess what? Now I get to enjoy it again! Thanks for making my day, Jill. As a true child of the 70's, there is nothing I love more than finding some wonderful teenage TV/movie memories. Yay!

Thank you so much, Jill, for posting these late 70s miniseries. As I watched I was 15 again with a huge crush on Phillipe, aka Andrew Stevens. I think I had good taste in men even at 15! I even still have my paperback copy of The Bastard which I re-read a couple of summers ago. Anyway, I loved these when they first came on and spent the Fourth of July watching. I do recall not liking The Rebels as much (probably because Andrew Stevens wasn't in it), but I will watch just to complete the series. A huge thank you again!!!

I actually found the second part called The Rebels on RU-vid first and watched it prior to finding the first part called The Bastard. I am 67 yet do not remember ever seeing this movie back in 1979. I recongnize so many actors from TV shows and movies from that time in this movie. Sometimes it is easy to forget the U.S. started from people of England and other parts of Euope having a grievance with their country and hoping for something better when crossing the ocean. That contunes to be the case to this day but from other lands. I think what is also forgotten is the amazing story of how a young Lafayette first on his own came here from France because he believed in the Revolution and how this Revolution would have not been pulled off without his military help and eventually France. I have read Lafayette returned to the U.S. in 1824 and received the reception of a rock star. Certainly in my city there are numerous places given the name of Lafayette.

I just happened upon this by chance, and am 54, and recognize the faces as they come into the movie. I met William Shatter as a youngster, about this time at my Cousin's. He was the Chiropractor for the National Ballet in Toronto, and had a large home in Cabbagetown where he let a floor of the house to prima ballerina Karen Kain who was dating William Shattner, who is Canadian. He was a very nice man, as I recall, who had his start in Shakespearean theater here, and that is where he met Christopher Plumber, and they have done much work together in theater, (Stratford) and remain friends to this day. Otherwise, I recognized the actor from MASH, the one from Bonanza, the Tom Bosley from Happy Days, and the older man who played a detective (I forget the show's name). Thank you for mentioning there is a sequel, The Rebel. I hope I can find it. This is a part of history I am unfamiliar with. Thank you for the upload, Jill, and for the poster's comment.

Thanks for the mention of the Rebels......it is up next. So now I know to watch it. This time in history is strange to me because I had my DNA ancestry done and I am 47% French, 27% Ojibwa and 21% English and 5% from the east coast of Canada. I feel like I was there for the wars of that time.
@larryloveless2967
@larryloveless2967 3 года назад
@@murieltainter5936 That's really good how you got your ancestry done. That mix sure shows going back to that time. My Dad actually was able to complete a family tree likely from so many years his family staying in the same part of Ohio but traced it back to the 1700s with a man who came from England but first started off in the very western part of Virginia. If accurate according to Revolutionary War benefits my Dad found he was captured and later exchanged for other prisoners with the British in a fort by Detroit. I'm sure my Dad's side has a big mix from that time on. My mom should be pretty much all German as her mom and dad came over to the U.S. around 1900 and settled where I live in St. Louis. Glad you now know about The Rebels. I liked seeing all the many actors that I remember and it is more like a soap opera version, but that helped keep the interest instead of just fighting.

Patricia Neal is the mother. She's fantastic in "Hud", and a less well-known movie she did with Gary Cooper called "Bright Leaf" about tobacco tycoons at the turn of the 20th century. Not as highly praised as she should be these days because a stroke derailed her later career, and her romantic life often overshadowed her work.

I remember this. The commercials started weeks before it aired. They counted down the weeks then days to the premiere. It was so well hyped that at the age of 12 I actually watched this. It wasn't what I normally watched back then. I was mainly Sci fi and action movies. I didn't have patience for dramas. Or so I thought. I enjoyed this film immensely. After this I included dramas and period pieces.

@@bluecollarlit Carson I like the way in which you said that. I tend to have the habit of looking at the scenery, and the details on clothes: and chuckling when a character returns in the same storyline but they diligently have something different ie: a female character only has 1 earring on whereas before she had 2.

The excitement and anticipation for these made-for-tv miniseries are a thing of the past. The family used to gear up for the Saturday/Sunday night feature with a big bowl of popcorn and enjoy. So sad movies like this are no longer a part of our culture. Reminds me of the North and the South *sigh* oh well, now we have Netflix, Hulu etc. etc. etc.

There is so much left out of John Jakes book that I will go back and read them again! Nice effort in making this series but the book is so much better!

John Jakes would get surprisingly graphic with his sex scenes. They kept them nice and tame for network TV!

I was a high school student when this aired, but for some unknown reason, I didn't see it, or I don't remember viewing it. I do remember reading the books, however. I'm so glad I came across the miniseries now, at the age of 54, having studied much history in college and graduate school. I have an M.A. in history, emphasizing American and Native American history.
