This scene always stuck with me because you never think of the fact that realistically batman would have to spend nearly every waking hour that he wasn't fighting crime, preparing to fight crime. But in every rendition of Bruce Wayne he's always seen bouncing around town like a rich playboy. If he's ever in the bat cave he's just sitting there usually, just staring at his computer like, "Hmm, yeah...". This is what it should really look like. Obsession, aggression, melancholy, sleep deprivation, all in the service of something that would require all of his time and give him virtually nothing in return. No praise, no glory, no satisfaction, just more wounds. It almost makes him seem kind of insane. Which is more in line with Batman's theme of just being one step above the crazies he chases around Gotham, which is also a major theme in this film. Honestly its pretty rad. People call him emo batman but I think he's more human Batman. Batman may not have powers but he still acts like a superhero most time, all noble and always saying the right thing. Here he seems unhinged and mentally ill, manically trying to overcome his trauma through pure violence and convincing himself its for a higher purpose. Even Alfred is like, "Yo wtf are doing down here all the time B? this is getting creepy..." I want more.

The absolute best approach of this movie was how little we see Bruce Wayne. It really goes to show his mental state and how careless he is with his public reputation. He’s so devoted to being The Batman he can’t even begin to act like a regular person anymore.

I saw it put best on tumblr. In most Batman adaptations no one assumes Bruce Wayne could be Batman because Bruce is such a playboy. Narrative like in the comics, year 2 and he is still in the process, like a new growing bat, not long wings, learning to fly, progress in his tech and vehicles, fight moves, gets hit and has a heart, not bitching out and holding back, improving his detective skills, i mean how can it be bad? I find it interesting that few people praise Pattinson's work for this Batman. It is extremely common for villains to be the center of attention, but this time, for the first time, the protagonist is the one who shines the most. Pattinson's performance in this film, for me, is more remarkable than Ledger himself, as the Joker. Today, without any fear, I can say that he is the actor that I like the most and that encourages me the most in future projects. As a Batman fan, I am also confident about the Matt Reeves saga, as it is a universe that is in the best hands and with complete autonomy from its creator. For many, this is already the best Batman and for others not yet or without any chance of it, but I am convinced that, in the future, it will be more remarkable than Bale himself and Nolan's trilogy.

It's honestly my favorite Batman. Actually seems like a human pushing himself to the absolute limits of his capabilities to try to take on an impossible task by himself. Bruce usually is just like, "Yeah I'm just a regular guy with no super powers whatsoever, but I can knock out Intergalactic conquerors, outsmart time lords, and keep up with the Justice League all while running my company and appearing regularly at public events. But that's just cuz I got gadgets and I only sleep 3 hours a night!" Always seemed just a little bit ridiculous to me. But this version, this is some real depth that I hope they expand on. The guy makes Bruce almost seem like a kook I love it.
@APurpleFable
@APurpleFable Год назад
On top of his depth and believability, I also love how the movie alternates between his perspective and how he's perceived. He has this aura of melancholy and hurt that makes him fascinating, a little otherwordly in some scenes. It's like, yeah, I believe that this man is Batman. I believe that he's obsessive enough to dress up in a batsuit and chase down criminals, that this whole thing is him trying to make sense of a highly traumatic event and struggling with finding a place in the world when he's not hiding behind a mask. But I also believe that others would remember him, be fascinated by him. Want to be noticed by him, and eventually fear him, too. While his broken psyche is obvious when you see him "up close", in the scenes where the camera pulls back and the movie adopts other characters' points of view, he turns into something far more ethereal. It all makes sense. This is the first movie Bruce Wayne that actually completely makes sense in my eyes.

The dark night is my favorite Batman movie and movie period. I love bales performance and think he is the best Batman, however THE BATMAN and Robert Pattinson come in a very close second place. This movie is fantastic! Matt Reeves delivered a masterpiece of a film.

Damn. My father died when I was very young, a little younger than the child in the film. that look from Pattinson crossed my heart. I loved Keaton's Batman, Bale's, but with this scene, Pattinson won me over. he's my Batman and I hope he continues like this in the saga

I wonder how this Bruce Wayne experienced his "Why bats?" moment. Maybe he wallowed in sadness and apathy in the heights of that tower following his parents' murder, obsessing over the details, forcing himself, even as a child, to relive that night. Maybe instead of rushing off in a flurry of emotion, he just quietly saunters into the elevator and takes it all the way down, unaware of what's actually at the bottom. Maybe he finds a means to explore his trauma and rage in that terminus, a place to scream where no one can hear him, a place to break things when words fail, or even just a dark expanse where he can obsess over details without interruption. And maybe, as that terminus became his sanctum of escape, he documented the behavior of the bats, how they roosted in silence away from the daylight and took off into the night on a relentless hunt. Or maybe he took literal inspiration from Dracula, a prestigious figure secluded to his castle, taking up the form of a bat in order to perpetuate an aura and embark on a mission.

I remember when I was 13 years old I was beaten up by older kids 15-16 as they were older and more fully developed as I was a defenseless child. They attacked me and battered me so I got into weights, muay Thai and combatives for civilians to fight off that pain and trauma. I transitioned to the high school campus and one day when I was attacked in middle school the high school campus went to do a sports activity with the middle school campus. There was a kid there who seemed to be going through I used to be when I was 13 and I just looked at him the same way Batman looked at the Mayor's son seeing my young self in him who I was several years ago.

Before, I said I think Bruce should put on a more relaxed façade, as his resting grim, solemn face is a giveaway for his Batman identity. However, I now change my mind - Bruce's parents were murdered, so it's understandable that he's been affected by deep, personal tragedy regarding his disposition. Also, he hasn't returned after a seven year absence like in "Batman Begins", so there's not a more obvious suspicion that he could be Batman.

That monologue changed EVERYTHING, Mr. Reeves did a perfect investigation job through material sources (comics, graphic novels, etc), he saw what the other directors ignored: the first person dialogues. And that kind of narrative IS essential for an introspective and tormented character like Batman. Well played Mr Reeves, brilliant move. We just hope that Warner don't screw everything cancelling your Batman projects.
