The Batman and X-Men Weddings Bother Me 

The reasonings for both weddings not going through were both trash. "I can't marry you, because I love you too much" "I can't marry you, because you can't be happy" *lame*

Bruce getting married to Selina was the kinda push of character development he needed. The idea that Bruce needs to be unhappy is such an awful way of thinking.

"Hey boss, let's make these lovers finally warm the hearts of their fans..." *"Eh sure why not."* "...by making them married!" *"ARE YOU INSANE?! COMIC BOOK CHARACTERS CAN'T GET MARRIED OR ELSE WE CAN'T RANDOMLY PAIR THEM WITH OTHER CHARACTERS IN THE FUTURE! Can't ever have real long term character development can we.

These are giving me PTSD flashbacks from "One More Day". What the hell is wrong with the comic book industry and the concept of... heck, not even marriage, but long-term stable relationships? Besides the BS hack excuse of "they're boring", I mean.

The fact Selina and Bruce drifted away was such an awful decision. Selina's reasoning was also a stupid. This was a major cop-out, but I hope they get back together since the series is 100 issues apparently.

While I love Batman as a character having him get married and tring balance family life with his duties plus having a new partner to fight alongside would've have been one of the most unique and fascinating thing any writer has ever done for him. They wasted the opportunity, hope Tom King makes up for it later.

What really upsets me is that Tom King said he did the ending like that because he wanted to do something original that hasn’t been done in the Batman mythos. Like dude, if you didn’t want to change the status quo just say it because “wanting to do something original” Batman being married/engage and that falling off THAT HAS LITERALLY HAPPEN TWICE AT LEAST. Not getting them together it’s literally the most unoriginal boring thing you could have done. Would marrying them have made things better or worse? I don’t know. But it would have been original and new, which is something we haven’t had in a long time.

It's almost as if Kitty and Piotr were an intentional fake out, to mess with DC and Rogue & Gambit tying the knot was the actual planned story.

And speaking of the ending of the issue wtf is flashpoint Batman doing with bane? He died and how’d bane know about flashpoint Batman he wasn’t there he couldn’t have known about his adventure with flash going and why is Gotham girl there?

This is another bad result of the status quo in comic books. No matter how much effort is put into characters growing, maturing, and evolving, something is going to happen that will revert everything back to the status quo. Just like how Spider-Man always has financial and relationship problems & mutants still face discrimination with little improvements over the past few decades, Batman can't get to keep that one true love he damn well deserves by now because the status quo is god and will never allow the comics to evolve.

I absolutely agree. I feel like marriage is a way for characters to really feel like they're progressing in life to "toughen up" the guys. You know what's strong? Faith and love. Caring for others. If they have kids, learning to be there. Call me SJW or whatever, but this isn't a form of masculinity we get to experience without it being toxic. Batman and the Robins is an example of the love he has. And I agree that the "show don't tell" is more important, to let characters realize the problems and emotionally go through an arc rather than a stop.

This is why I stopped buying Spider-man. Character growth once again takes a back seat to marketing. Maybe Catwoman bought into the reasoning behind eliminating the Parker-Watson marriage.

DC and Marvel tried to stir controversy with these stories. But they failed. *Miserably*. The true controversial thing, would have been to let these characters get married and let it stick. Try to write stories based on letting their characters grow and change due to this event, instead of finding -new- boring and -creative- contrived ways to let the status quo reign supreme. So, breaking up Batman's marriage was a masterstroke in Bane's ultimate plan? What is he now, an evil matchmaker? Way to go King. You took one of my favorite villians and made him a a bigger joke than Killer Moth with how assinine that last page reveal was. What DC and Marvel did, wasn't innovative and new, it didn't draw in new readers, it didn't make me (a long time reader) excited to read their stories, it didn't make me want to recomend these books to my friends and it certainly didn't make me want to continue buying the issues. It was just the same old shit that comic books have been doing forever. It's sad that we have gotten to the point where something mundane happening in the characters lives is more exciting and interesting than any clones/mindcontrol/eviltwins/evil plots by meglomaniacs/deaths/ressurections/reboots/ could ever be. It didn't help that during that same Wednesday, _bendis_ decides to wipe Superman's family away with the most lazy plot device I have ever read, because he can't be arsed to write Superman with actual character growth or nuance. He might as well have brought Mephisto along with him from Marvel to sell Superman's marriage and son, with how poorly written his shit was. Fuck him. Fuck King. And Fuck The Status Quo.

I don't know why the brides being influenced by their friends and not by their one reasonings seems so off for me (it would have made sense for Seline not wanting to settle down just yet being so used to her independence for a long time). I feel like that might make them seem a bit more fickle in their own decisions.

It really pissed me off that Batman and Catwoman didn't get married after all that build up.Not to mention the fact DC told the New York Times about the outcome of the wedding to spoil the story for their customers. I started buying the Batman comics because of the wedding and since there wasn't a wedding I'm going to stop buying the Batman comics.

I agree with everything you said, especially in regards to Batman’s happiness and the Robins. To me Batman represents beating your inner demons and rising above them, finding happiness and family along the way, so Tom King’s run and especially issue 50 felt like a slap on the face to me

I will never understand comic’s mixed feelings on marriage. With some exceptions it always feels like a tease when ever it happens or is about to happen. Why create something that you’re not going to go through with(drama is not a good answer)?

Batman's wedding, at least, was just a stupid cash-grab. A publicity stunt. The character needs to move forward or the comic will stagnate/regress/devolve just like eeeeeeeeevery other damn DC/Marvel character in recent years.

Often when a "friend plants seeds of doubt" in the bride, it would be because they're only pointing something out that they see the bride herself already knows and feels, and needs someone to validate for them. Which in writing would be okay if only beforehand, the bride was already shown contemplating her doubts but just pushing it aside, with her friend only giving the last push she needed to jump. But if the bride never questioned or had any sort of red flags or jitters before, and then a friend swoops in with a conversation while watching the stars, then what the hell.

It's implied within the story that marriage to Catwoman could be a good thing for Batman. Catwoman was manipulated into believing the opposite as part of Bane's plan to break the Bat, not fix him.

Superhero weddings in the modern age are as meaningful as one of them dying and the coming back...and then dying again.

All superheroes relationships/weddings are just redundant. Whenever I hear about one happening I say:start the countdown to a) divorce b) death treats and or deaths c)in fighting d) infidelity e) all of the above. I can really only think of two sets of heroes that make it work. Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. Mid nighter and his husband.

The fact that Selena was willing to leave Bruce at the altar because “He can’t be happy and Batman” proves that she DOESN’T DESERVE HIM ANYWAYS. She thinks that 1. All his friends and family don’t already make him happy 2. It proves that she doesn’t even want to TRY and help him improve his ability to be a married man and Batman at the same time. Honestly they just proved to me that she doesn’t really deserve to be his most consistent girlfriend. Just. Someone else be his main girlfriend.

What bugs me about the assumption that Bruce can't be Batman without misery is that it undermines his initial commitment to justice: he was spurred by misery (the loss of his parents), but it's the desire to prevent that sort of misery for others that really drives him; the ones that just want to make things better for others are always the most hopeful of characters. It also reveals a massive flaw in modern portrayals of Batman--that stoicism, conviction and introversion are synonymous with misery. Regarding X-Men... I dunno, I can't decide if it felt forced or not. But Rogue and Gambit deserve a win.

and this is why i don't read either marvel or DC.... because they are obsessed with going back to the status quo. wether it's with all the reboots of DC or with one more day and all new all different for marvel.... seriously screw the status quo if it ruins all the big moments of a comics series... i'd rather have a story where the story always progresses, with legacy characters to take back the protagonist role and always break any form of status quo.... like jojo's bizarre adventure did with it's story... or with savage dragon for image comics. seriously screw marvel if they can't handle long term change.

This decision is bullshit. I always thought that batman and catwoman would always end up together. To me selina was bruce waynes true love. Bruce would finnally be happy he could still be batman as well as being happy. This idea that batman has to be miserable is bullshit. Superman and lois lane are or were a couple and he was still able to be superman. The flash barry allen is married to iris west. Wally wests flash is married. Batman has friends he gets on well with nightwing, the robins etc and the justice league.

These two books have proven a point I've made for years: ongoing superhero comics are soap operas with capes, the fact that they've done these massive multipart stories to lead up to a wedding with a dramatic twist, hammers that in. And I'm not saying that to put down superhero comics, I love them and have no problem with soap operas, which can be a compelling form of storytelling (Heck I'm not ashamed to admit that while it was on the air i was a fan of One Life to Live). But what I'm saying is just a objectively true appraisal of the medium. Both feature ongoing going, continuity focused stories that have no complete definitive end, yet do have smaller story arcs. Rely on human melodrama and tend to avoid massive changes to the status quo. And Character death is rarely something to worry about. Superhero comics are soap operas with capes.

Thank you, I'm not alone here...I kinda got into Batman and DC in general with Tom Kings run, which I found fascinating at first, but...yeah, the wedding taking over kinda made everything go slower. I loved the Poison Ivy-Story, because there was a clear problem and Antagonist, and Batman needed to outsmart Ivy with the help of Catwoman, to solve it. But then it went downhill... The Booster Gold-Story was slightly infuriating, in how it tried to hammer in "Bruce needs to be tortured for Batman", and how it kinda derailed Bruce Wayne as a character. Then there was the Joker-Story...and the entire Miniseries of villaisn fighting Bat-Family characters all worked up to...the Joker just killing a efw people in a church to draw out Batman and simply brawl with him. I expected it to be some kind of climax to the wedding-saga, but it really just was...boring. Don't get me wrong, #49 with Catwoman and Joker both bleeding, and just talking, was nice, but everything was still just underwhelming. Issue #50 was extremely annoying. On one hand, there was this beautiful idea of giving all these old Batman Writers/Artists a page to draw out both characters, and poetic narration to explain their love...and then the marriage is just: "You know what? Let's just get married in two hours on this rooftop" 'K", followed by Catwoman busting out an old girlfriend from Arkham as her witness, who then throws in some small words to make her get cold feet. What a low ending. I can't say anything about the other weddings, because...well, they were kinda spoiled to me now. I'm reading with Marvel Unlimited, so I'm half a year back. Both proposals are a surprise to me, and I'm especially shocked by Rogue and Gambit actually succeeding in getting married. I loved the Left Field-Attempt of getting Deadpool and Rouge together, and always felt bringing back Gambit was just the same "We want everything to be like it was 20 years ago" I've grown to hate about current Marvel...

While Kitty Pryde is one of my favourite characters ever and I really like Colossus also but I am very glad that they didn't get married. The way their relationship started when she was 13 and he was an adult really ruined their romantic relationship for me. Plus the fact that writers like Claremont and others have hinted at Kitty's bisexuality, I would much prefer to see writers explore that avenue more. If they paired Kitty with Illyana romantically I think that would retrospectively make the wedding make much more sense from both sides as well.

The Batman wedding thing was one of the stupidest comics I've read. I stopped reading Batman after that and have been trying to sell my Tom King Batman comics leading up to that ever since. Nobody wants them! (50 bucks for 50 comics, not a bad deal I thought) I generally either really enjoy the comics I buy or at least feel indifferent. Rarely do I think they are as bad as Tom King's Batman. The art was fantastic though. Batman needing to be unhappy was the biggest load of garbage

Another set of stories that hint at breaking the status quo in exchange for far more interesting stories and then choke at the last minute. At least Gambit and Rogue finally happened. I'm not the only one whose seen that ship as Cannon in all but name tell now, right?

I think my biggest frustration is that one of my favorite characters, Holly Robinson, hadn't been seen since pre-flashpoint and was a deep an complex character. She was so traumatized by killing one person to save Selina that she became a drug addict. Tom King decided that Holly not only killed 200+ people, but she also blamed Selina and ended the wedding. Tom said he wants to finish his run at 100, so I'm sure the wedding will happen, but it just feels like a cheap plot device to throw Holly under the bus, when she previously had been nothing but loyal.

This is why i stoped reading American comics they never end so no character development really happons because theirs so much of it so it never ends but i love manga because they do end nothing wrong with liking comics just i like to know i get to witness the end of a character

On DC and Tom King’s part, the whole wedding was more of a marketing stunt despite the character growth that it took up until issue 50, which was then discarded like it never happened. I feel more bad for retailers and local comic book stores who had to order so many copies since this was treated as DC’s biggest event yet. Honestly at the very least they should apologize to their readers, considering that they’re the ones paying $3.99 a month for a single issue.

To explain the “marriage to Selina is him being happy”, it’s not that other things don’t make him happy, those are just individual times he’s happy, in spite of himself. He doesn’t think he can be happy. However, the marriage is him finally accepting that he can be happy and still be Batman.

I’m glad you agree with me. I often joke that Batman is secretly the most popular and loved comic character, he’s probably the happiest and most proud and content comic character, and he even gets to keep his cool loner brooding reputation too! Batman is basically the Logan Wolverine of DC because he’s on like 12 different super teams, he has his own whole family of crime fighters and sidekicks. He has a whole family full of love and respect, he has a bunch of amazing sons that make him proud and give him purpose and happiness. He has friends he can truly trust because they’re literally nearly infallible gods and the best of not only humanity but several other species as well.. he knows if he ever truly needs help the most powerful people on the planet are a call away. I think Batman just pretends like he’s a loner because he knows it makes him seem even cooler and more mysterious! Haha He’s actually that cool kid on campus who always walks alone but knows everyone in the school, has a dozen different awesome secret handshakes with people, he’s a member of a bunch of different clubs and out of nowhere you notice he’s also a male cheerleader too and you realize that he makes it fucking awesome… you look over and he’s casually tossing beautiful women in the air with one hand and doing sick flips and hanging out with all of the women you dream about… Dude is just seriously awesome yet somehow has the reputation of a loner. That’s Batman. The guy who you see picking up his little brother from school on his awesome motorcycle and realize he’s also a super good brother too… wtf?! Is there anything this dude can’t do?! So you start to hate him and decide to join those angry ICP kids and become a Juggalo and start wearing clown makeup and decide to pick a fight with him and get your ass kicked in fabulous fashion by the awesome male cheerleader loner who leaves you bleeding on the floor while everyone in the school comes by to ask if HE’S okay and all of the cheerleaders line up to offer to take care of him while stepping over your broken body to assist a man without a scratch on him. Selina didn't just abandon Bruce because he can't be Batman if he's happy, it was also about her not being able to pick between being a hero or a villain, her loved grey area would be gone. And that's something else that I had a great problem with. Like "woman, do I really have to believe you didn't talk about that already when you were superhero-ing together for a while?". Seriously...the entire wedding event was a bunch of false advertisement, poor planning and poor planting. And yet a majority of people still kiss Tom King's ass. (Yeah, I haven't been liking the Batman comic already from the "I am Bane" arc and it just gradually got worst to the point of being vexing for me, yet I see everybody being so forgiving of him even though he does the same things over and over despite pretending they're entirely new. DId anybody ever read New Earth? I am not saying Earth-Two and Earth-One, but New Earth? like from the '85 and forward to be precise. He's more preoccupied with making something sound cool than actually thinking if what he's doing is original or makes sense or not.)

Marvel needs to stop flogging the dead horse that is the Kitty and Colossus relationship; let them move on already. Batman and Catwoman, however...that wedding issue was disappointing, but I'm sure they'll get hitched by #100 or so.

The problem is just that comic book writers just don't like marriage. Basically absolutely everything surrounding the Spider Marriage culminating in One More Day and what they did to Lois and Clark's marriage before this basically made them doing this a complete non-surprise. I think they think Comic book readers are all single and therefore superheroes being married makes them harder for the audience to identify with.

I have to drive an hour out of town to get my new comics and I don't like reading what I'm going to buy online before I buy it so it took me a few days before I picked up the wedding issue of X-Gold. Problem was my sister came out to visit having already had it spoiled for her she assumed I'd read it already and asked me how I felt about both of the twists. Unfortunate. But actually reading them I really enjoyed them despite having it spoiled. And I already had a feeling it wasn't going to work out anyways.

Peter Parker was (and still is) relatively around the age of 28 when the wedding was happening (it is ambiguous now because it is vaguely hinted at that Peter is only “mid twenties" in the current book but still let's use 28 to maximize Piotr and Kitty's ages as much as we can) Kitty was introduced in 1980, approximately 14 with her birthday being shown a few years later *real time, not comic time* Piotr Rasputin, was similarly, 18. Now the “it would've already happened" point is already LARGELY invalid given that their relationship never took a romantic turn until Kitty was much older than she was, but my real kicker and overall point is, Peter Parker was only about 23 in 1980 TWENTY FREAKING THREE. Meaning only five years have passed in the Marvel universe since the introduction of Kitty Pryde. She's freaking 19 years old or barely 20. and Colossus is about 23. So literally, wtf was Illyana talking about? Her dumb little observation is baseless and makes no sense whatsoever. She's basically saying her brother should've knocked boots with a fifteen year old girl; “boo if it was real love he would've already got you pregnant in your sophomore year of HS" like seriously wtf.

The DC situation felt poorly thought out. A weird extension of the idea of a woman fixing a man, oh she can't marry him because that'll magically completely change him despite all the other important relationships he has, no no she'll fix him too much. As for the Xmen one I can't really say a ton about it since I'm literally about to start reading X-Men this week😂 literally have the Uncanny Xmen omnibus to start off, but I will say based off what I've heard/read online about that ship I'm not exactly bummed it didn't work out. Unless I'm wrong that ship just sounded like an excuse to justify a pedophilic-like relationship and that's always bothered me in comics. (Note: Spoilers for the current Bat Comics) Update on the Bat Family: Batwoman and Batman are about to try and kill reach other, Azrael is in space, Red Hood's been kicked out of Gotham for shooting Penguin, Damian is going through a teenaged rebellion stage and taking advice from Red Hood and basically going "Screw you, Dad!", Barbara is having trouble with the chip letting her walk fizzing out so she's got her own mess, Tim's absolutely nowhere to be seen until YJ starts, Dick Grayson has freaking AMNESIA and wants nothing to do with the Family, and of course, the whole Catwoman thing. It's only a matter of time until something happens to Alfred. DC is literally trying to take away every single part of Batman's support structure as they can. They even admitted outright in one of their DC Nation magazines. This scares me, in so many ways.

I really feel like Batman being happy and stable in his personal life would make him more efficient as Batman. I'm no expert, but generally the times where he is going through a rough patch are when he start slipping into dangerous places. heck, that's the whole reason Tim Drake volunteered to become Robin after figuring out that Batman was becoming unstable after losing Robin. Not to mention, it would also make his efforts to fix Gotham as Bruce Wayne more efficient. That's one aspect of the situation to keep in mind, punching Super-vilains and criminals is only one aspect of fighting the sickness that plague Gotham.

The Bat-Cat wedding was ok its cool i dont really care about their relationship so it doesnt bother me tho i can see why people are annoyed because it did take over. However. HOWever. HOWEVER. HOW-FUCKING-EVER. Colosuss and Kitty??? I fucking love those two. They are such a great couple. I love their dynamics and both of them are great solo characters but together oh my fuck are they good. We so rarely get happy endings in comics but if anyone deserved it these two did. FUCK. The decades their relationship has spanned through, the reboots and alternate universes and the phoenix five thing and everything i just wanted them both to be married. And ye sure it probably wouldve ended in tears with someone dying cus comics but damn cmon. No amount of artistry can excuse this yes this was the best way she could call it off but that never shouldve been into question. Id rather that she died than jib him. FUCK. Having said all that the Gambit and Rogue thing does console me.

Here's a thought: does Gotham really need Bruce Wayne? Or at least a full time Bruce Wayne? We have a hyper extended BatFamily to take care of crime, on top of an international group of metahumans who will probably drop whatever their doing to help freaking Batman if he needs it. Also Superman. Speaking of which: DC evidently decided Clark doesn't need to be a brooding wreck to be a superhero, why does Bruce... AAAaahh

Me too. Pisses me off. Everyone says it’s only 50 half way through the story. Well King better Fucking have them married at the end of his run or I’m going to burn all 100 of his issues. It’s so stupid. I hate what King has done. It’s stupid that they think Bruce can’t be happy and be Batman. If he doesn’t make this better by the end of his run I may be done with buying “products” from DC and Marvel and buy real “Stories” from the independent comic companies who are telling stories and aren’t just selling shit. I Prefered Kitty and Star Lord. Some of the Relationships that did happen were too unique to destroy for the classic couples. I feel like DC and Marvel shouldn't Make everything the way it was a few years back. For Example, Jane foster as thor, Don't see why she was retired.
