Paul Dano as the Riddler was amazing. His characters have always been complicated and "weird," and I can't think of anyone who could have brought the Riddler with this complexity.
Hey I haven’t seen the movie but what happens with salena and Bruce? Are they a couple? Do they like make out? Do they continue being enemies? It’s weird in the comics but what about the movie?
Excellent breakdown! I saw a lot of people saying that they didn't like that there was no clear distinction between batman and Bruce Wayne... But I think thats the point. He hasn't grown into that distinction yet. But by the end of this movie, he realizes he has to use Bruce Wayne as a tool to rebuild and give back to the city in a way that his parents didn't. I just appreciate the clear growth it sets up in the character for the next movie. He'll be more polished as Bruce, and that's exciting to think about.
He literally tells Alfred that he doesn’t care about that line or maintaining a facade for the Wayne’s. It was an important moment in the film I think people glossed over.
I'm waiting for the other Super Hero movies to take on this same route, with different genre's. Like I would love a superhero movie that is a horror. Like a Batman Scarecrow movie could be a horror
Bruce actually stood his hand for the mayor, looking at her, but the kid was the first to accept and trust Batman, he wasn’t even in the frame, he appeared from behind the debris
I hope he doesn’t become robin unless he’s Tim drake. And I hope if he is Tim, that dick has already grown up and Jason is ‘dead’ pre-red hood. I’m all for a fresh take, but I feel that the source material shouldn’t be ignored, and there’s certain aspects that shouldn’t be messed with.
I loved this take on Batman and Gotham specifically. Noir detective Batman was long overdue on the big screen. Can’t wait to see where they go in the future.

we had so many movies about batman the superhero, this is the first movie about the batman from detective comics. the first movie about the real riddler, finally, and the best Gotham we ever got until now. Reeves gets it and deserves a ton of praises for this new direction - we just wanted a 'good' movie, he delivered the best batman adaptation. Now can we get a Robin please?
I'd like to see Robin too, but not until the 3rd or 4th film. He's just beginning to be Batman. He needs some time to grow into the savvy hero we all know and love first.
During the ending when Batman is leading the citizens out of the stadium, he is holding the the flare which makes the water red almost eluding to a Moses-like figure leading his people through the Red Sea to a new world. At this point I feel like Bruce recognizes his role within Gotham as a leader/keeper of peace rather than a symbol of vengeance
Also I think him falling into the water right before that scene represents baptism. And the flood waters coming into the city represented judgment like the flood.
@@TheCrazyCloon it's fine if you disagree with someones possible take in the symbolism in the movie but Christianity is at the foundation of western culture. So people are going to potentially write it into movies/story's and see it in movies and stories whether you think it's a thing people should be doing or not.
I liked the fact that when the man off the train was saved, he was just as terrified of Batman as the clown gang was. The city at this point doesn’t know if Batman is a good guy or bad guy or a bit of both.
I caught that too but he’s really one bad day away from becoming the ppl he stops he’s basically unhinged with a moral compass so it’s understandable lol
I think the most fascinating thing about the movie was when we saw Bruce interact with the same people Batman does and how differently people react to each. Every other Batman flick has a Batman plot and a Bruce plot but there isn't much overlap.
I really loved this movie, and your breakdown is spot on. I'll definitely be going back for a second viewing. The music was beautiful, really dark, tense, and even hopeful in some parts. Like Joker(2019), the score is integral in driving the story.
@@BubbleyBlue3 I was already tired when I watched it, and nearly did fall asleep in the first hour. I'll give it another chance when it comes digital. I didn't not like it, but right now I sure wish they would of cut at least an hour out of it.
I actually thought it was the weakest part of the film. Great during the car chase but really boring and emotionless at times. Fucking loved the film though. Going again tomorrow.
Think they may have hinted through Alfred being targeted. Riddler only targeted corrupt for the first 2 acts. Knew that Alfred was a Wayne (Wayne eyes only) and Bruce identity/he was at orphanage. Maybe Riddler knew more than he lead on
@@smoothbrainjones riddler knew who Bruce was. The bomb went off when he was at the orphanage Alfred was part of the Wayne family and probably knew he'd open it. Also he wanted Batman/Bruce to solve history of his father's past
@@e3vL1 Riddler did not know Batman’s identity. They definitely imply it, but the final conversation the Riddler will make distinction between Bruce Wayne and Batman, he talks about them as separate people. He refers to Bruce as “him” and and makes a comment about being upset “they” couldn’t kill him as he literally believed Batman was working along side him
@@smoothbrainjones Riddler's was self absorbed and wanted to tell Batman his motivation and that he knew his identity. He noticed Batman wasn't paying attention looking at the security cam so he switched his tone (speaking in riddles) so Batman could step up and listen
Probably my fav besides The Dark Knight. I liked the one with Jack Nicholson a lot too, but it just doesn’t pack the same punch when you watch it these days. The animated show I watched as a kid in the 90s was for sure one of my favs too.
I was actually a little disappointed right after seeing the movie, but after some thought and this breakdown I can confidently say it’s pretty great. Not only is this Batman not as skilled as we’d expect, he’s also struggling mentally, he doesn’t fully understand the path he’s on. When the Riddler follower used his line while endangering innocent people, Bruce knew he had to become something else. A symbol of hope instead of a symbol of fear. Quite the reversal of the ending of the dark knight, where Batman positions himself as the enemy of the people to take the heat off actual criminals like Dent. It’s just really good character development
Yeah honestly the ending kind of annoyed me because I know there’s going to be a better Batman movie continuing from this and I’m going to wait some years but still a great film
It was only his second year as batman. He's very inexperienced. That's how he missed some of the major clues. Why Penguin crowned him as "world's greatest detectives". Despite his accomplishments by the gadgets he's acquired, he's still getting his feet wet.
I understood the interrogation scene to be some form of a mirror. Seeing each other’s similarities and what they could’ve become. Also “Vengeance “ pummels victims’ head the same way as The Riddler.
I thought Batman's identity was revealed because Riddler kept emphasizing Bruce Wayne when they met. There were even clues in his apartment. Turns out it was only because he's the only target he didn't get? Man, such a plot twist.
@@dzhops7316 It may be up to interpretation but here's my take on how riddler knew 1. Riddler's was self absorbed and wanted to tell Batman his motivation and that he knew his identity. He noticed Batman wasn't paying attention looking at the red blinking security cam so he switched his tone so Batman could step up and listen 2. The news article ' who is the Batman?' clearly had Bruce's picture right next to it. 3. If he didn't know he was Bruce; After Alfred was hospitalized, there was a huge gap in time where he could have sniped or snuck up and attacked Bruce especially before Bruce went to meet with falcone Guess we'll know for sure if riddler show up in the future, or if there's an interview
Did anyone else get a strong Darth Vader vibe from Batman at times? His walk and brutality have a very Vader feel, and then even the music that played while he was fighting the gang at the beginning (I think that’s when it was) sounded a lot like the Imperial March!
Because there’s so many aspects in this film, there are so many different ways and lenses you can watch this film in. You can watch it as a detective Se7en/Zodiac movie. Or as a Saw horror film. Or as a complex mob epic. Or as a character study/ psychological thriller. Or even, as the ending proved, a somewhat tragic love story. And it’s amazing that they fit all of these into one three hour epic.
People are allowed to feel how they want to feel about The Batman. The only thing i hate is that people keep comparing it to The Dark Knight, when the goal should have never been for it to be better. TDK is a SEQUEL to Batman Begins. Let’s compare The Batman to Batman Begins; surely it is a much better film. The Batman sets up a great universe with the possibility of an EVEN BETTER sequel. I am betting that Battinson’s trilogy will be the best trilogy of Batman films we’ve seen.
To be honest neither _Batman Begins_ nor _The Dark Knight_ were in my consciousness the entire time I watched _The Batman._ I came to see if Battinson could pull it off, and boy did he ever. I can't wait for the next two movies.
The movie even compares itself to the Dark Knight when you see how the Joker is portrayed 😂 what people need is a Hugo/freeze working for the Court of Owls in a 2 volume set. Since modern cinema is written for adult children I don't think that will happen anytime soon.
Riddler doesn't know batman' identity lot of people misunderstood that scene because it's subtle but, in fact he doesn't care about who's behind the mask, its just a misunderstanding to create tension for batman, and of course for us.
@@cameronhounslow351 he sent a bomb to Bruce, intending to kill him while leaving another clue for Batman to follow "their" plan. This implies that Riddler does indeed not know that Bruce is Batman.
The bomb was supposed to blow up Bruce. And then the package was there for Batman to see. He doesn't know Bruce is Batman. He's hoping to kill Bruce but then leave the fireproof package for Batman to read.
@@pillar81 I know I just mean like i didn’t get bored at all and when I thought it was almost over and got bummed I looked at my clock and saw there was still like 40 mins and enjoyed it even more the story never got boring
give Paul Dano all the oscars bro. that shit was magnificent i’m so happy we FINALLY got a maniacal calculating genius riddler portrayal. I love the lore of Gotham being explored in such great detail it’s not just a faceless backdrop for Batman to exist in, it’s a living breathing incubator that creates monsters. ugh. just everything about it was flawless.
Well, except when he was an idiot...that's my only issue with the script. Batman became smart or dumb depending on what the script needed him to do. There are two points in particular that he just flat out misses stuff that are trivial compared to other stuff he catches...and there's debatably a 3rd thing that he should have noticed before it happened but was too late. That's always a danger in any film with a super detective character though.
@@andrewshandle Kind of realistic if you ask me. I'm a detective of sorts and simple things are sometimes harder to catch depending on how complex your thinking is.
@@mkdub9600 Well, not really. It's not based on realism, it used as a tool to force the action in the movie, which is fine of course, but it's shows problems with the writing. If the only way for the movie to go forward is for Batman and/or the Riddler make silly mistakes or it'd end, it means something is happening purely because the script demands it, because other parts of the movie requires him to figure a bunch of stuff out or, again the movie doesn't move forward. One example is the car chase scene. In the scope of the movie it _never_ should have happened yet it was needed because they'd already hinted the Batmobile, so they found a way for it to happen. It's not the most egregious example of course, but I want to keep this spoiler free. There are a lot of single points of failure in this movie where he literally has to messed up what he messes up, or has to solve what he solves all at the exact same time he solves/doesn't solve them or the movie doesn't happen.
I just got out from watching the film. Mind blown and this movie did it for me. Been seeing alot of dumb comments about the film. And everything you just said was literally everything I thought and saw in the film thanks for helping project my thoughts. if you don't see this in this film idk what to tell you guys. This was art.
This is absolutely brilliant and makes me love the movie even more. Finally a superhero film that is actual cinema! Though you could say this is almost closer to an antihero film. Phenomenal analysis!
I see why they called it The Batman, it was a Batman movie and not a Bruce Wayne movie. I could care less about another Bruce Wayne movie. Either Matt Reeves is a legit Batman fan or he just studied the source material before production. So many pulls from different stories…..I am assuming that was venom he injected at the end. It didn’t feel crowded at all with all the characters that were in it and it really felt like an established setting we were just dropped in the middle of.
Matt Reeves based this off a 22 year old comic written by Darwyn Cooke. Darwyn Cooke passed away in 2016 from lung cancer at 53. The comic is called Batman Ego.
Ryan is subscribing to the theory that the reporter, Edward Elliot, who was killed by Falcone 20 years ago, is the Riddler’s father. Others are theorizing that the slain reporter had a different son, named Thomas, who will show up as Hush in a sequel. Finally, some are combining these theories into one that the Riddler is actually Thomas Elliot in this reality, and may take on the name Hush in a sequel.
Was the green stuff that Batman injected into himself “venom?” The same stuff that the original Bane would use to pump himself up to wreak havoc? It was bright green and Jim Gordon looked freaked out seeing Batman beat up that guy in that way.
seemed like a adrenaline shot, but would be interesting if Bane shows up and Bruce realizes the venom is very similar to what he's been using it could be a cool character development
@@theshaggydogg2867 I think it would be an interesting back story if young Batman beat Bane by using some of the venom and then getting hooked on it. Or venom is made by Wayne industries and some of it got leaked onto the streets. Showing a younger flawed Bruce can make these films more interesting.
Fun fact: Robert Pattinson said that this Batman was inspired by elements in Mask of Phantasm. I noticed when Batman was spying on Catwoman it was very similarly shot how Batman was spying on his Andrea in MOP. Really cool stuff.
I thought that the edward elliot scene was definitely setup for later. Gives clear reason on why thomas elliot AKA Hush would hate bruce wayne so much. The riddler is confirmed to be edward nashton though, one of the cops said so when they were searching his apartment
In a way I was disappointed that it wasn’t hush. Movie was still good but when I heard that there was a “twist”… I expected something more than what we got
@@SolidPain6624 personally im happy with riddler, I hate when a “twist” like oh character A turns out to be character B. Like in arkham origins when black mask turned out to be joker. Each of the villains in Batmans rouge gallery is interesting enough on their own without having to rely on the element of subverting expectations
I didn't think the reporter was Riddler's father. Riddler says he was there that day when Bruce's father announced his campaign and promised to help them (orphans) through the renewal project. To me that meant that Riddler was already an orphan and had no connection to the reporter. The movie also starts around the anniversary of Thomas's death which was near election day toward the end of the campaign and around the time the reporter was killed. The GCPD also find Riddler's apartment full of ledgers and they reveal that he was a forensic accountant. I thought that implied that he discovered the city's corruption by doing the numbers.
Great breakdown! This movie had a clear and loud message: you can have the best of the intentions, but you must be careful about what you actually do, because those actions will certainly have implications and lead to more violence, if the way you chose is violence. I loved the idea of a young Batman, who is in the process of understanding that Vengeance is not the way, he must become something else. Beautifully portraied by Pattinson! The final twist was incredible! You SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER believe Riddler is provoking Batman, instead he is just inviting him to help! Crazy! Also that moment "he knows who I am" was pure thrill!
I felt like the message was a direct mirror of current-day politics in every major city. It is often the people who pay off the media to get the most public support that is robbing blind to your face, but so long as they simply "say" the right things, it's okay.
Really good points as always. This movie really brought an almost fresh take on the old Batman origin story by focusing on Bruce coming into his own and growing into a hero and a symbol of hope for the people of Gotham. These are themes also touched on during the Nolan trilogy, but dare I say, I think this movie actually nails it. The character growth and performances all around just great. The twist where Riddler realizes Batman wasn’t on his side the whole time was also really well executed
@screencrush Just my quick thought: I think the movie hinted that if batman spent more time as bruce maybe, maybe things could of been prevented. Alfred said that bruce need to spend more time as bruce at start of the film. Bruce wanted to blow off the meeting with the accountant. Later in the film when selena has the croocked cop, the cop said that the renewal fund was taken advantage of (all that money with no over sight). I think you can see it in batmans face. If he spent more time as bruce and gone to some meetings (like the accountant) maybe he could of notice the misuse of $. Perhaps solving the events of the film sooner. In other words, gotham needs bruce and batman
Incredible breakdown, I didn't think about the symbolisms about the plot much but I focused more on why his personality was so different from the other live action displays of Batman/Bruce Wayne. Thank you for this, I do hope Matt Reeves continue the aesthetic cinematography of this film to the coming sequels because even though Rob Pat's Batman/Bruce Wayne is still an amateur he does have a lot in his plate like from being the Bruce Wayne his father wanted and embrace the playboy billionaire persona to lure more information from the people of Gotham.
It seems the sequel will be going in a Court of Owls and No Man's Land type direction which is fuhhhhhhhhhhking AWESOME. This film was incredible and Battinson was absolutely amazing and totally carried the film with his "less is more" approach.

I like it how this batman is so human, immatured, not that strong buff and choreographed action hero with best gadgets.. And he didnt have that sore throat...
My initial reaction coming out of the theater was amazed, yet somewhat let down. Hear me out. Maybe I was coming in with too much Se7en expectancy, with all these secrets and clues culminating in one huge reveal at the end. But that never came in the movie. However, the more I think about it hours later, I think that huge moment was supposed to be when Riddler reveals that Batman has essentially been doing all the work for him. So in a sense, they were both partners with the same end goal, and Batman pretty much got played. I thought the ending to flood the city was a bit out of left field as there were no hints or lead up to it. But the fact that Riddler inspired people to rise up like him ,does make sense for his character. And I love how just like Batman and Riddler are essentially two sides of the same coin, the vengeance that Batman stands for can be interpreted in different ways, as we saw in the Riddler followers.
The flood made more sense when you considered the use of explosive with the DA, the forcing rats through a maze of the police commissioner, and the shooting of Falcone from above after he was lead into the firing area. So smaller seperate versions and "test runs" of what would become a meta-plan. It was se7en-esque in that the riddler got batman to fulfil his plan the same way John Doe set up Mills to become part of his orchestration. The ending didn't quite work for me tonally despite seperate well done pieces.
@@notmyrealpseudonym6702 Agreed. Just saw it a second time and it works much better when you know it’s coming. Now it makes more sense why they did that. Riddler’s plan was to essentially expose Gotham and then cleanse it. There’s also so many ways and different lenses that you could look at this film through.
I know the person who plays joker is amazingly talented but he’s just NOT IT for the movie not only was the voice so bad that people in the theater where I watched verbally asked “ 2 face” out loud before the AWFUL cringe worthy attempt of an laugh. The laugh is so bad that In the end when both riddler and joker are laughing you can’t tell who’s who in the end. It’s just not it felt forced like how someone who isn’t crazy thinks how a crazy person acts unlike when watching other jokers it just feels like your watching or hearing a crazy person each word you can hear in the jokers voice that the direction of the conversation or even sentence can go anywhere a sense of suspense and chaos on each word you don’t feel that here it just feel poorly casted. 🤷🏽♂️
I understand what you saying and I felt similar in the first viewing but when i saw it the second time it felt different.give it another try it might change your opinion about it.
The least believe part of the movie was that Gotham PD brought an unconscious Batman all the way over from the church that was the center of a hostage turned bomb explosion and into the police station headquarters only to then try to unmask him right as he is awakes. They could have unmasked him right at the church!
@@manyobidnazz No. Tell your source they're wrong. They drove away via motorcycle at fork in road: Catwoman goes up north to steal from rich people, and Batman stays in flooded Gotham
You know what I loved about this movie that no one is mentioning. This movie did not end with Bruce's love interest finding out he is the Batman. He is so eager to tell anyone he is the Batman in Christopher Nolan's version's. Tim Burtons Batman I mean come on he is sleeping upside down when Vicki Vale wakes up and then 2nd one Catwoman figures it out. So refreshing to have this Batman still be a mystery to Catwoman at the end even when she asks him to leave with her.
Anyone else kinda blasé at the Joker tease, I love the joker and all but we don’t need another version of Joker. We already got Leto’s and Phoenix, the latter having the been the best in recent years. Also I really think Matt Reeves needs to avoid using the joker and focus on the other batman villains. Mr Freeze would make an excellent opposite for this batman. I just don’t think a joker would fit in with this trilogy.
THANK YOUUUU NOT ONLY the tease for BANE with the boost batman takes in the end and now that water is everywhere Mr freeze, penguin, the crow but not only is it ok not having joker even though I’ll take it but the CASTING WAS WEAK not only did the actor who did the role not sound like him at all his laugh was pretty weak and not convincing
Speak for yourself guys. A lot us love the joker. Mind you, not everyone loves y’all’s little joker movie that DC made cuz they were backed in a corner. Myself and alot of people, don’t watch “made up origin stories” for example, “Venom, Gotham tv show, the Flash tv show and Critically acclaimed Joker movie”. I respect that it won an Oscar, but still not for me. This was the best batman movie ever, and it needs his joker. Robert Pattinson was perfect casting as Batman.
When the Riddler follower says "I AM VENGEANCE"., Bruce Wayne realizes he needs to be a beacon of hope, he becomes the hero that Gotham needs, not the one it deserves. He becomes THE DARK KNIGHT!!
i thought going into this. I bet it’s going to be dope. No way it’s better than dark Knight though. About half way through the movie I knew this was my new favorite super hero movie. Walking to the car I realized that might be the best theatrical experience of my life. It was amazing. My theater was fun. People yelled and laughed. Wow. No spoilers The movie at one point feels like it’s wrapping up then BOOM like a 4th act AND IT WAS AWESOME. This movie just kept piling on awesome. Great pace Great cinematography Great acting by literally everybody The riddler was fantastic I didn’t doubt Patterson before the movie but he even blew me away. That scene where he screams!!!!! THATS MY BATMAN I’m definitely going to go see this a few more times in theater.
I got the impression that the riddler was the only one who called him batman and he told everyone to call him vengeance. People took his catchphrase "I am vengeance" literally and took that as his identity.
agreed, didn’t it seem like his plan randomly turned from an expose to a mass murder plot? or maybe i’m missing something, this movie is way too detailed and meticulous to have a weird transition like that for no reason
Good thesis. I think the final break from vengeance to hero was when Batman risked his life cutting the electrically charged jumbotron before it hit the flood water.
Bruce Wayne also wears the same brand of sunglasses al Falconne (Persol). Bruce's are the new model (and of course, in black), while Falconne's are vintage tortoise shell.
Good job!! You mentioned a few things I find t pick up on...I'm older & have watched Batman since the TV show....this movie was excellent...the Riddler was amazing. I'm going to see it again this weekend.
