Completely agree. “Hush’s” characteristics in the movie also goes against his traditional ones. Spoilers ahead: Riddler is known for wanting attention, showboating, and overall proving his superiority by telling all he is capable of committing crimes despite putting his name out there. Hush is the exact opposite, working from behind, misdirecting, and using others to accomplish his goals while keeping his identity a secret. My favorite takes on Riddler are the ones that would want everyone to know from the start it was him that was the mastermind.

Technically Riddler's obsessive need for attention is still there, with the Arthur Wynne clue and having his gang steal an armored car full of money knowing that would make Batman suspicious. Plus, Riddler unmasked in front of Catwoman, so he clearly still craved attention, but he changed his villain persona for his scheme because he knew the Riddler name had been tainted in the underworld (due to so many defeats) and assumed in order to manipulate his fellow villains he would have to pretend to be an all new, scarier/secretive villain (in the comic he was able to manipulate them without doing that). But Jeph Loeb's comic book version of Riddler (from Hush & The Long Halloween/Dark Victory/Catwoman: When in Rome) was a unique version of the character that was a cowardly but capable mastermind, and Jeph Loeb established Riddler as manipulative before writing Hush, as Riddler manipulates Catwoman in Catwoman: When in Rome, pretending to be her ally while scheming against her. And speaking of Hush, his original main characteristic was his need for revenge, so that much the movie did get right despite getting everything else wrong. But the most popular version of Hush wasn't even the original Jeph Loeb version, but instead the Paul Dini version, so I figure DC will make a Heart of Hush animated adaptation eventually, so I'm not that mad about this alternate version of Hush. Honestly I saw the original story as more of a Riddler story anyway since Tommy Elliot could not have carried out an effective revenge plot without the information and resources Riddler provided.

Honestly I've enjoyed the animated "Hush" changes from the source material way better than the extra 20 minutes *Paris Franz* + the batsex (I know that they briefly hooked up in the Batman:Beyond universe, and I wasn't a fan either)... I find The big change in that "Hush" movie is, IMHO, a pretty awesome way to spice up the DCAU univ \o/ I love Hush, I own all his stories, Heart of Hush, Hush Money, House of Hush, Hurt returns (a gem), and the BatCat pre-wedding story in which he goes after Nightwing, and reveals that he changed his face again, but to impersonate... Dick Grayson! Aaaanyway, I love this character (even if I understand why he has some detractors) but I still loved the twist in the movie; I wasn't really expecting an awesome movie, probably just a decent adaptation in which Tommy's guilt would sadly be even more obvious than in the comic because no time for subtelity. Instead I was really into the film, and even if I had guessed the new culprit At least in the animated version, there was a big dent in the Hush=Elliot theory: the fact that it was Batman who brought him into this, asking specifically for him to do his brain surgery in which he implanted a tracker. The comic explains it at the ending briefing session in the Batcave, but in the movie, nothing IIRC, and Tommy was just a giant red arrow. I guess that If you wanted this adaptaton to follow the original plot to the end, so it would fit better in the overall DCAU and in our collections, I totally understand your frustrations, but if you embrace the *twist* or watch it without knowing the real ending, you end up with a solid Riddler-driven story, and Nygma is awesome \o/ (dang it, another wall of text >< soz people...)

Hush was a bad adaptation but it was still a very fun ride. I liked the movie, but the comic was so much better and the movie could have tried to stick closer to the original or even made Batman Hush a 2 parter like The Death of Superman/Ride of the Supermen. I wouldn't call Hush as bad as The Killing Joke because TKJ had terrible animation and a useless Batgirl story before the real story that I couldn't imagine rewatching again on purpose. With Hush I'd watch it again because it was a movie where Batman fought almost every foe and had charming scenes with Selina Kyle (even though the voice actress wasn't great).

One of my biggest gripes with the DC animated movies is that most are FORCED into the New 52 timeline continuity of these films instead of being standalone movies like Under the Red Hood which means a lot of KEY characters from the comic book aren't in these films because some of them have NEVER been apart of the New 52 movies here (main one being Tim Drake)

This is a weird gripe, but I hate that people have to apologize for comparing this movie to the source material. This movie was made to be, at best, an adaptation of a prolific graphic novel for fans and, at worst, a commercial for a prolific graphic novel. I also don't understand why DC Animated Movies have been taking writing cues from the recent Disney movies by having the villain be someone was was _never set up to be the villain._ I hate bad Twist Villains, and I don't understand why this film and Gotham By Gaslight have gone out of their way to pull the wool over the eyes of its casual audience and its audience who actually read the source material. The reason why M. Night Shyamalan became a joke is because he became obsessed with writing twists with no set up or focusing too much on fooling the audience to think it was going to be one thing when it was actually another thing.

The other shocking moments in the Comic included Gordon stopping Batman from killing Joker, and Harvey Dent saving Batman from Hush. All while Luthor was President of The United States at the time. This would’ve taken that red herring in the original comic (where Clayface impersonated Todd to further mess with Batman’s mind) and made it the twist that fans probably would’ve liked more, and would also make some sense. Still, I get where you’re coming from, in the sense that having the enigmatic enemy turn out to be Todd might be a bit repetitive in the eyes of most viewers.

The creative team obviously cashed out when making the comic book to a movie. I thought the movie was odd because it was nothing new to a common movie-watcher. It had a lot of common tropes i.(Bruce has friendships before being batman and play a pivotal role later in the film) ii.(Bruce is toying with the idea of having a romantic relationship with an acquaintance but could be very dangerous for his girlfriend to be a part in his life or examining batman's and selina's lifestyles when juxtaposed together ) iii.(This film shares a universe with other heroes; Superman is here!: serves as a plot device for batman and selina ) These are the overall highlights of this movie. This was lame in comparison to Batman Vs Robin (Which i believe is far more entertaining and fascinating than this generic entertainment)

The reveal being Riddler instead of Thomas was a big disappointment because it made the whole story seem pointless. It was unexpected indeed but it makes no sense that Riddler would go through all that trouble just to have a 1 v 1 fight with Batman with a sickle cane. If all he wanted was a 1 on 1 fight then what did all the previous planning accomplish? Taking control of Superman, Thomas's murder framed on Joker and everything else for what? Why not kidnap Cat woman from the beginning and hold her hostage? And why fight with just a cane? Isn't the purpose of a plan to bring all odds in your favor? Where are the henchmen? The extra weapons? All that unfair stuff bad guys are known for?

The Riddler twist was such an incredible disappointment in an otherwise pretty enjoyable movie. I feel like the whole first 2/3rds of the movie they had the idea of keeping it Thomas Elliot, because Hush had absolutely nothing in common with Eddie Nygma at all till the very end and it felt very forced. Plus how Batman defeated Eddie at the end was painfully rushed and kind of embarrassing.

Read comic after the movie, on its own it's fine but If I would've read the comic first this might've pissed me off. It's so weird cause in the last 3rd on my first watch it felt like hush became a different person because he did. I will say though the reveal was better or at least it was a mystery. Like the moment I saw the character I said he's hush while watching the movie like the actual second he came on screen I said Tom Elliot was hush.

I think like Gotham by Gaslight(comic) the twist is less about who and more about why they're doing it. Which I like more than just twist it's this person! Cause it is very easy to work out. But Hush(film) followed in the footsteps of Gotham by Gaslight (film) and changed it for a shock reveal.

The only thing I like in the film over the comic is the way Selina and bruce break up, it really says a lot about their characters and why the relationship probably won't work. I feel like hush the character was more interesting in later appearances than the original comic so i'm nit broken up over riddler but i don't think the ending was too effective. I feel like hush the comic is great for teaching people about batman as it covers a lot of history. Here it doesn't have that and i feel like the joker moment doesn't work nearly as well because the history of what he did to bruce and Jim isn't there as Jason, Tim and Sarah don't exist in this universe.

I don’t think hush failed as a movie because it wasn’t adapted perfectly to the comic, many adaptations are better because they change the original in ways that make it better. Though I have not read the comic I do know how it ends, I cannot say if I like the comic or movie better because I didn’t read the comic. Another complaint I hear is hush’s identity, and the fact that the movie changed it. I think this is probably for the better, because if the mystery of his identity just comes down to: mysterious character not in any other comic. And a villain not in any other comic, you do see how easy that is to solve (and I do know about the plastic surgery to make his face change but if his face changes more than once he could still be anyone). It’s less of a mystery and more of a crappy riddle, so much so that a third grader could solve it. When I was watching the movie I immediately thought that Elliot was hush because he was a character unseen in any other comic or movie. But because it was the riddler no one expected it. And one more thing if your complaining about the voice acting you’re looking for flaws, more than looking for the good things about the movie

@dustinakadustin
@dustinakadustin 5 лет назад
@@billmcdermott9647 so they took an excellent short story and added in a bunch of unnecessary cameos, the story they told was nowhere near as interesting as the original. It was more focused on including other Batman characters and having a shocking twist ending than telling a good story. The Gordon twist felt insulting to his character, I know it's Elseworlds but they just turned him into a psycho who hates sex workers so he kills them. Gone is the quite frankly disturbing reason for the murders in the original story and in it's place a surprise it's a character who you'd never expect twist. If you haven't read the original the murderer is fairly obvious but the reason for his actions is more important than who it is. The art style used is terrible and barely echos Mignolas style, instead it looks very flat and they make an awesome Batsuit kinda silly looking with the overly large eyeholes, which were a bit more subtle in the comic. The animation is pretty bland too. Also in it's cameo quest they also add in another pointless romance side plot with Catwoman. Finally the ending is terrible, we get an animated series esque everything is exploding escape in the nick of time confrontation and then it's over. Gotham by Gaslight is one of my favourite Batman stories and one of the first comics I bought, I'm only recently into collecting comics. I feel the movie took a great story and tore it too shreds needlessly, they would have been better off adding a bit more Batman work, maybe an extra crime subplot to extend the run time a bit but should've kept the main story intact. I was very disappointed.

It was a good book and got me into the character but I still never got a chance to read the story where he debuted. I'll watch it on DCU when I get the chance then read it see how it holds that way for me. On a whole, it's a shame to see some of these DC animated movies not hitting the mark in these classic stories, like the original one, Doomsday (which they later remedied in the Death of and Return if Superman) and The Killing Joke. Hopefully they can find a nice middle ground or just not do them at all. Some things don't have to be or can be adapted to other media.

I re-read HUSH before watching the movie two years ago, and the story makes no sense. [SPOILERS] If Thomas Elliot is determined to kill his parents, why would he suddenly have to wait for his mother, a survivor of his attempted assassination, to die a natural death? The guy is obviously a genius, at least with superior intelligence, he just had to find another way to kill her. Poison her I don't know. It does not hold water. It would have been better for Thomas to obsessively resent Bruce for not keeping his promise, as the reader is led to assume at first.
