THE BATTLE FOR SUPER STOCK/A-stick AT INDY

The Super Stock/A division was at one time was the top of the line for the then factory hot rods. It was an A-classed car, with a manual transmission which meant the level of badassery was at a premium to race with this group. Over the years, such programs as the the merger with with Modified Eliminator in 1982, and later the Dodge Hemi Shootout, and the addition of the Factory Stock classifications took some of the luster off of the old meat eaters. But for three diehard Super Stock racers, the breed is still lurking in the staging lanes and ready to devour the competition.

We raced these old 427 FE motors back in the mid 1970’s and thought we were really do something when we ran some 9.70’s with them in a 1967 Mustang. I watch Ray’s 1964 Thunderbolt run mid and low 8’s is absolutely amazing to me with 57 year engine design. We didn’t have the hand make 2 x 4 intake which I’m sure boost the power quite a bit and we didn’t have the clutch less transmission. But even if we did that may of got us in the 9.20 range which would still be way behind Ray’s car. He talks about shifting at 9,200 RPMs we never went over 8,000 but our engines where old Ford LeMans steel rods and TRW pistons so we had some rotating mass.

@@ricklodestein1101 because they did not have a chance to win so NHRA did not want them to get their feelings hurt and made the Hemis only run against each other . @@EvansBrosRacing not true....nascar allowed dodge to run the 426 Hemi in 1964 even though it wasn't a production engine at the time...so ford introduced the 427 Cammer in 1965 and it was banned right along with the 426 Hemi but in 66 dodge was allowed to run the Hemi but Nascar banned the Cammer once again and at this time in Nascar if you weren't driving a Hemi powered Mopar or 427 Tunnel port Ford or Mercury you wasn't winning much of anything....anyways the Hemi was a force to be reckoned with but Ford was developing the Boss 429 to compete and unveil in the 1969 season but initially the Boss 429 and 426 Hemi were banned but eventually they both were approved by Nascar and in 69 the Boss 429 in the Aero Fords and Mercurys pulled the King Richard petty from Mopar and he joined the Ford camp because the Mopar cars wasn't as aero and sleek as the Ford/Mercurys and then Mopar built the Superbird and Daytonas and Nascar banned the Mopar and Fords/Mercurys because they were becoming dangerously fast....Anyways i looked up and researched what i just said in this text and between the 60-1970 seasons manufacturer wins are as follows... Ford and Mercury> Wins 215 Dodge and Plymouth>Wins 195 Chevy and The rest of GM> Wins 54 and most of these came in the very early 60s before Ford unleashed the 427 tunnel ports and Mopar unleashed the 426 Hemi and these two companies battle ferociously until Nascar once again banned the fastest cars Ford and Mopar....So in closing the Hemi remains the engines with the most wins for Mopar in Nascar and one of the winninest engines in drag racing history and of course everyone knows if its Top Fuel its got a Hemi.....Long Live American Muscle!

@@kx454 Do the stats numbers that were made comparison to Chivvies or Plymiths ,,Olds, Pontiacs etc. , a lot of them went to the grave due to their design was not perfected as could have been. and many owners didn’t spend money in the right places to make them strong to Live. Like the connecting rods were good not great and most died due to that part. Later on most guys figured it our what made them live longer , only after many funerals of them. I had one once that was a rod blown victim. After a while the Guys w fords were sick and tired of the chivvy favored nhra and left it altogether, like I did. nhra is just another club of bigots against others they don’t WANT to compete with for classical ignorance arrogant excuses they fabricated to justify their stupidity. its a chivvy based organization “crowd” favoring outlet. Go look at ANY GM car in it. Over decades of time and today. literally nothing on any GM car is a real GM OEM part, NOTHING!!! So there ya go, an facade of fraudulent chivvy advertisements under the GM banner. the phony gimmicks they played on others. We ALL got sick of their idiotic deceptive-favoritism games. Fords were the First A-stock cars to break the 10’s . Took EVERYONE a decade to do that! Jim Waldo 67 fairlane did it. They redesigned the Mod production class all together due to few guys ran the Cleveland style engine and NONE of the others guy could get Near them.. So of course nhra bastards declassified it all together. Its a fools game they played like a clown show, lying about things, changing the rules at a whim, chronically to disadvantage ppl especially Fords engines. I couldn’t care less if they went completely out of existence because as far as Many of us are concerned they will NOT ever see us or our money or input for their chivvy biased industry again! GUARANTEED! BTW, ppl are what it work, like Bob Glidden did the exact same thing with a Plymouth one year the Ford the very next!~ If he picked up a pontiac then would be no different! Its the Guy whom makes it work, the MFG isn’t so much the big factor.. except the HEMI, everything else is just a block of Iron! In the last 15-20 years they have about all together shriveled up TO nothing. Outside a big nitro race, typically the races bleacher stands are almost always empty except the racers pit crews of parents watching them. I’m surprised they haven gone under yet.

@@ashqelon7267 You have to remember that Chevy quite racing all together in '63...which hurt their development immensely in prime time racing. Fords never had it on the street, and that is a fact. Fully prepped race cars are different, people with $$$ can make anything work, and they obviously did. You claim that there is nothing "Chevy" in a racecar....Same goes for the Fords and Mopars what is your point? A Thunderbolt was a purpose built car...not even a street title. People build Chevy's because they make big power cheap. If Ford was in the same boat...people would be using them. I've got a 394 Olds in a Willys...I know the struggle of building parts (engine uses BBC rods as Olds stuff is very expensive).
