In 1946 returning World War II veterans ran a slate of candidates against the McMinn County, Tennessee political machine. On election night the bad blood between the two groups escalated into a gun battle on the streets of Athens.
Today we tell that story.

I did not know this had happen in our country. I have always said, the police and the soldiers are American citizens and should be always on the side of the people not on the side of the politicians. I am a veteran and if I have to take up arms against our government to save our country, I will do so. The government has no right to take away our guns. That is our priviledge and our right to bare arms. The reason, in case the government, like it is happening today, gets too big for it's britches. God bless us all.

my grandfather was in the jail when this took place and hes the one that got the guards to let them out so they wouldnt be shot

This leaves out a lot of details. Like the man that was shot by the corupt police. And how they beat people that didn't pay there fees. It was a lot worse than depicted here

For someone not from USA, a YT short on a colorised photo of the ex-GIs, got me to this extraordinary event in the post-war history of American democracy. In my nation, election rigging of ballot-boxes has been eliminated through use of electronic voting machines. However, in the recently concluded national elections, there is still a lingering suspicion on the neutrality of the election process and the federal Election Commission. I believe that such public vigilance should be a safeguard for democracy everywhere.
