The Battle of Diu occurred on February 3, 1509.
The Portuguese wanted a slice of the pie when it came to the Asia-European spice trade. In doing so, they would come into direct conflict with the Republic of Venice, the Egyptian Mamluk Sultanate, and local Indian monarchs.
The resulting battle over spice routes would be a decisive one, and set the stage for European dominance in Asia for centuries.
