The Russian and Austro-Hungarian Empires fight across open plains. The Carpathian mountains stand to the west, overlooking fields of dried grass, dotted with intermittent patches of snow. Small clusters of trees are found amongst the gently undulating terrain. Numerous clouds of smoke billow in the distance, implying the large scope of the battle.
Though mostly settled farmland, many rows of shallow trenches and a river cut through the countryside. Tall cover is sparse, with a few homes and wooden windmills offering high points. The river bends near a train track at the map center, following south in either direction, and crossed over by stone bridges. The ground is pockmarked with recent craters from artillery shells, an indication of the Russian offensive that approaches the area.
