Thank you Master Chief. My Uncle Ed was in the battle on Iwo Jima. He was a Marine. He made it through physically unscathed.

I have been to Iwo Jima 2 times. I've been ashore once. It was absolutely surreal. I still get chills sitting here writing this almost 20 years later and recalling sitting in a concrete Japanese machine gun nest over looking the beach while sailors and Marines disembarked from the LCAC's bringing us ashore. Thanks for the memory Master Chief.

My great uncle was killed on Iwo. My grandfather was in the corps & went back to get his body. While on the island he went exploring & found a cave with a desk & a rifle with the stock rotted off. He brought it back & we restored it together.

My uncle was KIA in Germany on April 1, 1945. Sadly, that was also the day that my aunt (sister) married her fiance. A few weeks later, a letter arrived in the mail to my grandparents from the Department of the Army informing them of his death. Thank you for your service, Uncle Haskell.

Watching a WWII documentary one time, they showed a video of marines walking along the beach. My dad said, "Hey, that looks like Grandpa Joe. It looks _just_ like him! What regiment did they say this was?" "Oh yeah, you didn't know? He was on Iwo Jima." That's how I learned not only did my grandpa survive incredible events and multiple famous battles in Korea, an unrelated great-grandfather did just the same in WWII. And... now I'm in the navy... Huh.

Thank you it was 76 years ago today Iwo Jima was secured. My father was there Cpl Albert Stone, radio/signalman , 14th Artillery, 4th Marine Division. He passed in August 2003 and was an active member of the Marine Corps League. Semper Fi 🇺🇸

Iwo Jima wa summed up perfectly by you. It's hot as hell, lots of artifacts and of course turkeys presented to the Emporer by the President at some point. We were told don't ever touch the turkeys or take any artifacts as it's against the law. The JMSDF galley was better than any other galley I've ever been to, and put our MS's to shame. The sulfur was ever present but made for gorgeous sunsets. It's one place most people never get the opportunity to see and glad I spend several weeks there with the air wing.

Hi Chief. As a former Marine I'd like to ask a question and perhaps see a video. I was told that Marines do not serve on Destroyers and Submarines. As they've been the sea going infantry and police on board why these two vessels (and any others of size) not be stationed aboard? I enjoy your videos and please keep 'em coming.

As a former Marine, I have read a lot of books about Iwo Jima, and seen many documentaries. On one of my documentary DVDs, "36 Days of Hell," there was a mention of army personnel on the island, but nothing was said about the unit size or its function. Since it was a regiment, it must have had a unit designation as well as a specialty. Do you have information of what that was? I have searched on line and haven't found anything. In addition to satchel charges and flame throwers, the Marines also used rocket launchers (bazookas) to attack pillboxes and caves. One of the Iwo Jima flags used to be on display at the DC Navy Yard.

THANK YOU & well done Master Chief. I'm always a gluten for U.S.Marine & any/all WW II history. Semper Fi BTW ... will you be at the launching of the new U.S.S ENTERPRISE in 2027? I've been a fan of The Enterprise since I found out my Dad's squadron VMF-323 did a tour on CVN-65 Enterprise. Turns out that VMF-323 did a tour on a different carrier. Too late for me though. I am still a huge Enterprise fan, from wooden ships till present.

Iwo would be the salvation of more airmen than were killed during the battle. B-29s and fighter escorts that were damaged would use Iwo for emergency landings. According to the Iwo Jima Fact Sheet - The National WWII Museum, 2200 B-29s with 24,000 crew members used Iwo for an emergency landing.

What are the rules and regulations about taking items off the island?
@masterchiefsseachest1983
@masterchiefsseachest1983 3 года назад
The Japan Self Defense Forces personnel on the island said that if a new tunnel was discovered to let them know so they could remove any human remains. Beyond that, they did they didn't care about anything remaining.

I went ashore on Iwo Jima in about 2002 or 03 and were told that anyone found removing artifacts would face Captain's Mast. I don't know if this was ships reg, Navy reg, or something required by the Japanese.

@@Reziac The Japanese are often not big preserving memories of battles lost Was a disgrace... A friend of my fathers , a WW2 Pacific vet. made a very serious attempt to return a surrendered sword and located the relatives but they refused the return of the sword. Surrender wasn't honorable.
