The war in the Pacific is in its final stages.
The US army, after a series of successes, has shrunk Japan's sphere of influence and is getting closer to Tokyo.
The mighty United States are about to attack Iwo Jima and a fleet of more than 500 ships is sailing there to launch a decisive strike.
Its the first time that the Japanese forces are called to defend the sacred land of their homeland and have an obligation to not allow the enemy take it, but on the small volcanic island they can not defend in depth and its loss is a matter of time.
General Kuribayashi is well aware that the Japanese forces cannot hold the island and his plan is to inflict heavy casualties and discourage an invasion of the mainland. This is the reason that the defense was not set up on the beaches around the island but would let the American troops gather on the beach before attacking them en masse.
Every soldier was expected not only to die defending his homeland, but to take at least 10 enemies with him.
