On October 7, 1862, Maj. Gen. Don Carlos Buell's Army of the Ohio, in pursuit of Gen Braxton Bragg’s Army of Mississippi, approached the crossroads town of Perryville, Kentucky. While a tactical victory for the Confederates in the field, it resulted in the end of the Kentucky Campaign as Bragg brought his troops back into Tennessee.
Join Garry Adelman, Stuart Sanders, Taylor Bishop and Joni House from Parson's Ridge on the Perryville Battlefield for a deep-dive on all things Perryville.
Please disregard the poor audio quality as best as you can. We unfortunately had a malfunctioning microphone.
Look for our numerous videos on RU-vid over the next week, and special thanks to all the donors who helped make this trip possible!

My great great grandfather was in Company H of the 41st Georgia. This was their baptism of fire in a major engagement. I believe they were on the right flank or the end of the line. They were fortunate to be with the Tennessee regiments. At the time I visited the land of the attack was on personal property. He and two brother in laws and one cousin were in Company H. They survived this battle They laid under the guns of Parson,s Battery and charged it head on. It was incredible that they took the three ridges with minimal reinforcements. I walked this ground in awe and honor.

I went to Perryville for the first time in October of 2019. My 2nd Great Grandfather and his brother, John Henry Coker and Albert Coker, were both teenagers in the 33rd Mississippi in Wood's Brigade. I was very impressed with the battlefield and especially the open nature of the terrain. Almost like Napoleonic War battlefields in Europe.

Defence in depth on those rolling ridgelines saved the day and exhausted the Rebels. Sam Watkins said it was the toughest fight he was ever in which is significant cos he was in a lot of the battles in the West. Thanks for providing the visuals for something I'd mainly pictured from reading about the battle. Great to see wildlife thriving too.

So to summarize the Battle of Perryville: Braxton Bragg’ ”wins” a tactical victory, but loses the State of Kentucky for the confederacy. On the other hand, Don Carlos Buell “wins” a strategic victory by losing a tactical engagement, keeps the State of Kentucky for the Union for the rest of the civil war but loses his command never to be reinstated. 1862, got to love it, lose by winning and win by losing

Where did Taylor Bishop get the cool Lincoln T-Shirt he has on for the Loomis Heights presentation? Also where did Gerry Adelman get his Fedora Hat? One other suggestion, use a drone with a camera to fly over the battlefield.

I went there on September 21 of 2019 during a drought and the conditions were almost identical to the day of the battle. Doctors creek was all but dry on that day also. I cannot imagine climbing those hills in full gear with incoming cannon and musket fire in that kind of heat. I was wearing shorts and a tee-shirt and it was very tough on me just taking my time. At one point they had a grass fire start from a auto exhaust over on the hill up looking down on the old Bottom house. They had to call the fire dept. to put it out.I imagine there was alot of fires started during the battle from hot ambers and wadding burning. My great great grandfather and uncle (Johnson and Turnes Monyhan) both of the 38th Indiana Vol. Inf. fought here in their first battle. Both ended up being captured at the Battle of Chickamauga in Georgia and first imprisoned at Bell Isle , VA. And then transferred to the notorious Andersonville prison in Georgia. Both spent almost a year there and both died there and are buried there.

I'm a descendent of John Kilgore who was at the battle of Perryville Let’s Start With His Obit: “An old battle-scarred veteran passed suddenly to his reward yesterday in the person of John Kilgore. He had been living with his son, William B. Kilgore in the First Ward, and got up in the morning in good spirits and ate his usual breakfast. Half an hour later he was dead. Apoplexy seized him and the old man, past 75 years of age, yielded an easy victim. He was a character in his day and was known by everybody. He talked of the Civil War almost constantly. He was not out in the service long, but he was there long enough to prove that his courage was undaunted in the cause. He went out with the 98th Regiment of the Ohio Voluntary Infantry in the summer of ’62 and was assigned to Company G. In October of that year in the battle of Chapline Hill, near Perryville, Ky., John Kilgore received 24 bullet wounds and one shell wound. He lay in the hospital till the spring of ’63 when he received an honorable discharge and came home to get along the best he could, carrying in different parts of his body, as he believed, 14 bullets that were never found, and he died in the belief that he carried these to the grave with him.”

And here’s a bit from another newspaper report: “John Kilgore, of Co. G, was wounded five times, in the face and body four times. He continued to load and fire with the greatest coolness after he had been hit four times, and shot away all his ammunition.”

Guys, I think, I sort of know what you mean, BUT to describe a battlefield as such a "beautiful place" and "a prettier battlefield" , where men died in horrific ways - fighting furiously - losing limbs, being decapitated, receiving fascial disfigurement wounds, losing life - I think is more than a little insensitive to those who laid on that ground you'er standing on - either dead or in misery. I know you all get pretty excited about the War but you might do another take when you find yourselves getting carried away with such glowing descriptions of the solemn places you visit.

I can't wait for this reenactment the energy on the night of the 8th after the fighting will bring some spooky stuff perryville is one of the most haunted civil war battlefields the is and the audio is probably because of the wind blowing on top or the spirits on parsons ridge collecting the energy to manifest themselves
