In this video, Docent John Lynch tells a Museum audience how the Allies ultimately defeated the threat of German submarines in the Battle of the Atlantic, the longest campaign of World War II. The U-Boats were trying to sink convoys of ships taking desperately needed supplies to Britain and the Soviet Union. The Battle became a deadly chess game, with each side using tactics and technology to counter the other. The TBM Avenger aircraft, of which the Museum has two examples, played a role in the Battle. The background of one of the two is detailed in the video.

My own research into the development of the Patrol Craft class of vessels and the increase in available Sub Chasers, Coast Guard Cutters, effective ASW Aircraft, Patrol Frigates (Corvettes) and above all Escort Carriers and dedicated ASW attack and patrol aircraft is what led to the ultimate defeat of the U Boats. The Avenger played an important role indeed. It was one of the most versatile aircraft invented in WW2. Great presentation by Mr. Lynch.

The US Navy was terrible in their inability to stop the German U-Boat onslaught against merchant vessels off the east coast. Inexcusable.

What occurred of the east coast of the United States from 11 January until around the middle of July was a crime. The British Admiralty warned us of the imminent danger of the threat, but our naval high command did nothing to try to interdict them. Admiral King, an admitted Anglophobe, did all he could do to ignore British advice about forming convoys and providing escorts. The owners of the merchant ships, especially tankers, resisted putting their ships into convoy because they felt it risked their profits. If it wasn't for President Roosevelt intervening due to pressure from Prime Minister Churchill, than the bloodbath would have been worse. As it was, almost 400 merchant ships, many of them valuable tankers were sunk in the first 5 months of 1942 alone. The ultimate losses topped well over 500 before the end of the German onslaught.
