Has The Battle Royale Genre Gotten Worse?

I wouldn't say that respawn shooters like Halo and Battlefield are more niche now. I think the recent entries of the franchises have just been so bad no one wants to play them.

Are you familiar with Farlight 84? On the first death, you respawn automatically. After that your teammates have to revive you and the initial respawns expire after a while too even if you don't get killed.

The games would be more popular if they weren't broken on release, or cost you a small fortune for any skin

Battle Royals do not appeal to me whatsoever. Arena shooters are way more fun in my opinion. I definitely enjoy a more casual experience instead of the all or nothing thing.

I also never got into the Battle Royale scene. Not my cup of tea

I honestly like the fact that the very beginning of the match doesn't matter that much anymore as the beginning always has the most amount of random variables. It's frustrating loading into a server and land only for someone to beam me down with a rifle simply because they got lucky and landed on a rifle while I still only have my pistol.

I don't know about you guys, but I don't have the patience to sit through and grind a game of BR, especially extraction shooters these days. I got burnt out on it after the pandemic. I'm sticking around playing Halo these days. But I hope arena style shooters can come back again with Quake 6, Tribes 3 and Valhalla coming out on the Horizon.

Not respawning and having to queue again because someone finished me instead of fighting my teammates was one of the reasons I absolutely hated battle royale games, to be honest.

Modern respawn shooters struggle now days because they're all trash. Literally all your examples are games that should be top notch, but the Devs behind the game would rather sniff their own farts than actually balance or fix their games. There is still thriving communities for older shooters out there that you just don't hear much about because they want to keep their community pure and running for themselves, the fans of a series, than to just let loose the gates to try and get as many brain rotted folks to come drown their beloved games with garbage takes that plague so many modern shooters.

I HATE people who don't actually work towards the objective - always have, always will. You can be a primary slayer on a team working towards an objective, but your kills should be meaningful towards that objective

I'm only on fortnite playing it's dead campaign mode i love the new br features they added but oh how im over the genre I'll switch to creative mode once in a while and play festival or LEGO (mostly festival as i grew up on guitar hero and rock band) as for shooters I'll play halo every once in a while would play it more if the servers were finally patched but im not dealing with that headache.

Cod rides the respawn trend more than anyone apex wasn't that bad till after season 6 or 8

in Fortnite it isn't as easy to respawn

Respawn shooters are simply not as fun as BRs. I love mw3 this year but I’d still rather play WZ3. And you’re just wrong about resurgence… theres still stakes like getting team wiped. Anyways the same way you could spend 20 mins looting just to die, still a thing!!

I'm proudly not a fan of battle Royale. At best, maybe Apex & Hunt Showdown. But nothing beats a Deathmatch game or a large combined arms comquest/rush

I didn’t play warzone for too long but I remember the jail break thing being neat because it was never done before I think. It felt cool that they were doing something different. It added a whole different layer of fear at the end game. Apex won’t be the same 😭 I swear I’ve never sweated more sitting in one place in those earlier seasons 🤣 banger video!

I see it as like you say telling a story, games that have quick ttk and a traditional shooter with respawns feels like practice.
