There is a town called Kilmore in my home state of Victoria. And yes there is a racetrack as well.

Great stuff chatham43, Wyndburgh National record 2nd,4th, 2nd, fell, 6th, 2nd what a trooper. Fred Winter rode a great race on the winner. Taxidermist with Lord Oaksey on board was bred by Evan Williams who had won the 1937 Grand National on Royal Mail and his son Ian Williams bred Rag Trade who won the 1976 Grand National.

To this day I feel the 1974 Whitbread was a injustice that John and Proud Tarquin lost the race in the stewards room to Ron Barry and The Dickler. Great jockey Fred Winter and a great win as he wasn't even mentioned until the close of the race. I was born on that day and my Dad had the winner. 60 years very shortly. My dad is 90 in June and shares a birthday with Sir Paul McCartney 18th June. Let's celebrate when we can in these difficult times. To the people of the Ukraine (Слава Україні!,)💔 Regards, Brendan x😎

What luck! I won ten bob on an illicit sweepstake run by the school spiv. The excitement of crowding into the school's television room and seeing Kilmore win!

Amazing how Freda's Son seems to struggle over every fence and almost falls at Canal second time and yet hangs on to the lead till very near the end. Pity didn't get in the top four. Gallant performance.

@@gregl6527 Hi Greg, I noticed that too. Momentous Grand Nationals then but sadly the race as been diluted down to O and is now a long distance N.H race. My first T.V National 1967 n say no more.!. I was hooked ' Best National jockey In my view the late Brian Fletcher a very acumlished horse man and modest too. Also this one the late Fred Winter and my late dad said he was best jockey he had ever seen and tremendous vision for the pace of a race. Kilmore wasn't mentioned until the second Becher's, but then steadily moved up until he hit the front at about the last fence.

this years race was very similar to the 1962 one. only 3 gone on first circuit , and like '62 the action also really began at the 19th fence , very similar race imo

Future winner, Team Spirit is the third unidentified faller at fence 19. Seas End is seen unseating at the rear of the field at the 19th. He's officially listed as having remounted and pulled up before jumping another fence. Carraroe falls at the 21st. Melilla drops out of picture to the rear before pulling up at the 21st. Clipador is just seen at the rear of the field coming to a stop in the last shot of second Becher's. Superfine's fall at the 26th where Taxidermist and Chavara pull up is not caught on camera. Vivant is seen approaching the penultimate flight but bypasses it out of shot.

Yes, Frenchman's Cove was a wonderful flashy chestnut. He was a very good horse in his own right. After being brought down in this Grand National, he went on just a month later to beat a very competitive field in the Whitbread Gold Cup at Sandown. Starting at 7/2 favourite he beat some very good chasers that included Carrickbeg, Springbok, Nicolaus Silver, Pas Seul and Taxidermist.

Hmm, watched a lot of the old Nationals now, didn't seem to be as many fatalities then as there are now since the fences have been 'modified'.
@MrGezz66
@MrGezz66 5 месяцев назад
I read somewhere that there was only one fatality in the whole of the 1960s. Watching that, I can see they went a sensible gallop. I think the steeplechaser breed has changed a bit since then, though - they just looked so much more robust then.

not sure even the 66 winner anglo was called flag of convenience, i suppose if your a rich business man like fred pontin anythings possible, in the 1840s there was a grey horse called peter simple who ran in quite a few nationals, then another peter simple arrived a few years later and won it twice, i dont think there are any rules about renaming so long as the other horse has retired
