Brian has schizophrenia. I don’t believe he has dementia, but his brain has been messed up for years. I met him in 1985 and he had it then. He took way too many LSD trips in the 1960’s and it fried his brain. So sad. He was also abused by his father
I agree with you! It’s very sad that Brian lose Melinda and now having dementia. It’s crazy because I worked with an individual at my job. That had the same diagnosis as Brian Wilson. Though the person I was taking care of Had more bitterness in him. Brian at least tried finding positive aspects because people life his brother Carl, Al, I’m sure Dennis, and Melinda in his life were looking out for him, except for Eugene Landy, who was a terrible person and psychologist to Brian. God only knows what’s going on with Brian. I’m keeping him in prayers but it’s amazing how Brian went through a lot and he still is around.
@@retronostalgiafan8635 I firmly believe that his creativity is what has continually propelled him forward through thick and thin after all these years. Brain power rules!!
I agree. Watching Mike/Bruce calling themselves the “beach boys” feels like an interview with Jimmie Nicol and Nicky Hopkins calling themselves the Beatles.
What's amazing and been said numerous times is the generations of people the music has touched once a Beach Boys fan always a Beach Boys the love never dies
The Beach Boys are the Best. I first saw them in 1979 when I was 19 years old and loved it. Since then I have seen them 45 times. I’ve seen the original lineup, then the group without Brian, the 50th anniversary tour, Mike & Bruce’s Beach Boys, and Brian’s Tour. These concerts are what summer is all about and they keep the “endless summer” going. I have met Mike and Bruce, talked with them a bit, got their autographs as well as a picture with them, and to tell you, Mike was the opposite of what people say about him. He was cool, down to earth and an OK guy. Bruce is so laid back and cool. Every time I hear “In my Room”, it brings me back to the days of hanging my feet out of my bedroom window after long little league game and listening to the BB’s on the radio. Summer would not be summer without Beach Boys songs!!!!
Great !!!! I first saw then in 1974 in Jersey city at Roosevelt Stadium and about 125 times since then. got Pet Sounds at 10 years old when it came first came out and was hooked. The 50th anniversary tour was simply amazing , no fooling around, just great music . It was fantastic to see teenagers there singing along. My favorite has to be ' wouldn't it be nice' with the amazing Hal Blaine on drums.
Carl was amazing. I was at several concerts before his death that Dennis wasn't even really playing. A second drummer was actually what you heard. It's a shame what happened to him.
To be 70 and remember when you were 10 and heard your first BEACH BOYS song.....they were always my favorite....and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Beatles.....as well....incredible time to be ALIVE!!!
Brilliant missed it on itv 1 morning programme, amazing a fan for 60yrs now I saw them play live at The Odeon cinema on stage in 1967. Mike and Bruce along with Dennis Wilson on drums and Carl Wilson. I was 16yrs old and blown away with it watched from the circle seats the crowds were amazing. The boys in their white and blue straight striped short sleeve shirts. This interview I just caught the RU-vid link by accident didn't realise they'd been on morning telly.x
This is one group where you really need a true BB fan to properly do an interview. Literally every journalist just thinks theyre just some early 60s surf band and know absolutely nothing about the groups history and relations and music post 1966.
My husband, Robin Willis had the honour in '72 to be the coach driver for the Beach Boys. After doing the 'Old Grey Whistle' they flew to Birmingham, where they did the first show. From there was Manchester, Liverpool & Leicester. They then travelled south & did Reading, Bristol, Brighton, London (Royal Festival Hall), Crystal Palace Bowl' with Elton John, The Who & Showaddywaddy.
If they doing something I don’t think it would be a tour. Probably a couple songs at the premiere of the documentary (excluding Brian) would be nice to see Blondie Chaplin there though.
The first concert I ever went to was a Beach Boys concert in 1978 - I was 10 years old. They were/still are my Dad's favorite band - we still love listening to their music together. I would love to see all of the surviving original members get back together once more, at least for a final show together. I hope that Brian Wilson is doing well.
Yes, The Beach Boys met The Beatles for the first time when The Beatles were playing in Portland Oregon on August 22, 1965. The story is in my documentary "The Beatles In Portland - The Complete Story" The Director's Cut Version.
@@oldsaerotech1167 Yep, lots of ego on Mike's end despite his foray into 'Transcendental Meditation'. My husband was a huge Brian Wilson fan, not so much Mike.
For sure! Al has always been Brian’s ally and Mike has always been Brian’s nemesis. Dennis and Carl have both been gone for decades. Not a happy scene sadly.
@@munimathbypeterfelton6251 Al sided with Mike in the late 70's. MIU album was a result of Mike and Al working together while Carl and Dennis hated the direction the band was taking
Toni Tennille was quite a beauty in her college days. And that voice, what a smooth golden sound. She did a lot of backup singing on various artists' albums ( Elton John and Pink Floyd, for starters).
The thing is nobody makes this kind of music...eventually it will end...I am glad I was young enough when it came out to enjoy it in the early days...like the Beatles, The Moody Blues...don't know if groups like those will ever come around again...
They definitely won’t. The 1960s and its music were a once-in-a-lifetime historical experience. But thanks to RU-vid, iTunes, Pandora, Spotify, Amazon, public libraries, and what few music stores that still sell CDs remain, the music of that era, generation, and its legacy will live on.
I'm excited about 7:27!!! I hope it's a public event with Brian Wilson. I live in California and only got into the Beach Boys last year but I'm so obsessed. I saw Mike and Bruce live last year but I wanna see the rest of them together in person even if there's no performance.
@@Phelps-1247 Yep, I know and it’s very sad. He’s really taken a turn. If it helps, I can rephrase my response.. “Al decided to play with Brian on every tour since the 2012 reunion when Love decided to basically move on from them.”
The Beach Boys were originally the Pendletons. When the initial record pressings returned from the pressers, the 'Beach Boys' label was on the records.... I suspect Brian's father went ahead and changed the name behind their backs.
My copy of the Beach Boys' album "All Summer Long" has a "Meet the Beatles" label on one side. Always annoying, because I can't remember what songs are on that side. Will have to sign up for Disney + to see the documentary.
It won’t be the same with these two on tour without the talent of drummer John Cowsill. Johns talent as a musician and his singing skills add up to a huge disappointment he was let go. Mike Love is quite the name dropper, a man who owes his career to his cousin Brian Wilson.
Well said on all counts, Tom. John C. was/is an extremely capable supporting player. When Love dumped him & guitarist/arranger Scott Totten, he cemented his well earned legacy as an insincere (your choice of obscenity here). And up to speed BB's fans know that was just the tip of the iceberg.
@@larrylewis5721 I am not a huge Mike fan BUT without him playing through the years no one cared about listening to The Beach Boys no one would know who they are today. Give him some credit , he also did write quite a bit of the lyrics to some great songs.
@@RichardFelstead1949 He does...this is where we are nowadays....one can either go through the courts or use money to own "the name" and then perform using it....look at "The Guess Who"...the drummer years ago paid Bachman and Cummings x amount of dollars to buy them out and to own the name. He then hired these young kids to perform as "The GUess Who"...recently Cummings has refused to liscense any venue to let them use his songs in their shows...shutting them off!
I’ve heard Mike pays a licensing fee to use the group’s name and he also pays a percentage of the merchandise sales to the other group members for the privilege…
Fine to go see them simply for nostalgia, but you're likely not going to be excited about the way they sound. If they sound anything remotely decent, it won't be coming from these old dudes. Saw them 3 decades ago and they sounded rough then. Just not possible for old guys to replicate that music/sound from the 60s or 70s. Falsetto turns into something other worldly when you're a geriatric.
@@coldacre Not as simple as that. Brian did live Beach Boys shows off & on after the 1960s, depending on his mental state & relationship w/Mike Love. Bruce left the group in 1972 & didn’t return until ‘78. Sooo, I believe Bruce didn’t pass Brian in total appearances until the ‘80s.
After watching Love and Mercy, I now understand why the last time I saw the Beach Boys in Birmingham their performance wasn't very good, it was only one there last song that they put their best into the song! this was back in the the 60's
@@garyt19651 I would like to if he would only shut up about himself. That being said all three Wilson’s were superior musicians and that includes Dennis. Loves voice was an important part of the blend and he was tolerable for the first 5 years of the group, as far as lyrics go there is a reason he was listed as co- writer on many of the songs… it was because he simply added in phrases to work that was already finished and a lot of his claims were debunked by Al and Brian. It’s not even a bad thing to be called the least talented member of one of the all time great groups.
So a reunion is impossible as Al dont get on with Mike and David gave it up and Brian is sadly out of it , but at least they all had a cup of tea on the beach.
Mike and Bruce have kept the Beach Boys legend going. People who harp on about Brian are right - he was/is a genius. But Mike and Bruce are too. In Mike Love we truly trust. x
They never mention Charles Manson and Dennis Wilson being friends and Dennis letting Manson record several songs…one “Cease to Exist” and reworked as “Never Learn Not to Love” that were never released…and no mention of Dennis being a drug addict or how the Manson family destroyed his Ferrari and Mercedes Benz….or leaving his own home and the Manson family stealing all Dennis’s possessions or his disassociation with the Manson family…after they left a bullet as a treating message for Dennis….the Beach Boys always like to come off as a squeaky clean American band..but the have a murky past.
Lots of dr ugs with the band, lots of drama. I think many people only know California girls, vibrations and I get around but don’t know of the sunflower album etc
So what? What band purposely props up and advertises the darkest parts they went through on their official career-spanning documentary? What a weird thing to complain about. Every single band has had problems. There are a ton of other docs and columns out there that talk about the problems that plagued the Beach Boys. This just in, they were alive and famous through the '60s and '70s. They got into trouble. So did many other bands. Help us all!

Mike Love is nowhere close to an equal in terms of his contributions. He is a self promoter of the highest order, and a bad human being. Five wives later.

I was blessed to meet Denny when he was 18 and I was 16! So young .. sweet and innocent! Truly a perfect gentlemen! Came to meet my Mama and loved my brothers Eddie and Bobby! Took me to his home in Hawthorne to meet his sweet darling Mama and father ! He would have me home by my curfew! Which thinking back was so kind .. with the status he had by then! I have nothing but wonderful .. clean .. all American memories of my and my oh so cute Denny! Carl and Brian were delightful! They were super tight .. lots of love between them . God Bless you sweet Brian .. the true masterpiece of the family ! Unbelievable talent! Yet all knew and appreciated it! To me the true Beach Boys were the Wilson Brothers! The true heart and soul! God Bless them all ! Thanks for some amazing sweet memories! XO < ❤️😇💕🙏🎀🦋🇺🇸😎⛱️🏄♀️🏝️🎶🎸🎹🕺💃💕🏄♀️⛱️🏝️🎹🎸🇺🇸
The Beach Boys are superior. There's no other band that can sing, write, produce, or play like them. They can perform songs either acapella or instrumental. Here's the unbelievable part: they were NOT auditioned or put together by any record company executives. They were brothers, cousins and friends who came together through their love and talent for music.
@@pumpkinking5174 Carl and Dennis both played instruments on Pet Sounds. Their early records were their own playing so they had to pretty good to break into the industry.
@@pumpkinking5174 The 'studio musicians' were there on request of the bands production to play the sounds Brian heard in his head. They did not write, produce or direct the music. If you're gonna dismiss records and artists for having other musicians,, you'll find there won't be anyone left. There's more to Beach Boys than just Pet Sounds or Smile.
Happy birthday Michael Love happy birthday... Beatles wrote a song about his birthday. Performance on RU-vid. Spiritual regeneration movement foundation.
these TV hosts are apparently unaware than any true Beach Boys fan despises Mike Love, and has little tolerance for Bruce Johnston. Perhaps they should have asked Mike about his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame speech in the late 80s, his many, many divorces, how he carved Brian out of the band when he was fully able to play and contribute... Mike Love is NOT a good human.
Mike has taken very good care of himself physically over the years, so props to him there. Plus, he was the oldest member of the band, born in 1941. Brian and Al were both born in 1942; Dennis was born in 1944; Carl was born in 1946.
Having taking in so much of the band over the years, it's always a bit of a challenge to watch stuff like this. Still I want there to be more Beach Boys.
