The Beach Boys-"Living Doll" (California Dream Barbie 1987) 

I wish they put this in the soundtrack to the new Barbie movie

Brian did this - probably at the urging of Landy ( who is credited I notice).At that time his fortunes were at a low ebb but he was prepping his first solo lp which wound up being highly praised. I remember a column by Bob Talbert, then a popular Detroit Free Press columnist which was highly critical of WIlson for what he saw as sinking to these depths. He also criticized Wilson's voice. Later, he saw an interview with Wilson where Wilson gave some ( but not all ) of the details of his chilhood abuse and his motivation for doing the song- that he thought it might help some girl somewhere who may have been suffering as well. To Talbert's credit , he wrote an abject apology column after seeing that interview.Given what Wilson had suffered, Talbert was stunned by his thoughtfulness for others. Always stuck in my mind glad its on youtube whatever its merits. And thanks to Talbert ( RIP) for being big enough to admit he was wrong- hard to imagine that nowadays- we live in coarser times.

I remember when my Dad (the biggest Brian Wilson fan ever) bought this Barbie for my sister! It came with that flimsy blue flexi disc that we'd play on our record player! He still sings this song today 😂!

My sister had that Barbie Doll. Gotta tell you, I like this song. I hope the boys got paid really well by Mattel.

Another Barbie song, nice! I know Beach Boys (when they were Kenny and the Cadets) made a song called Barbie. Side note: I know this isn’t a Beach Boys song because it’s Brian Wilson solo song but still thought I’d mention their song Barbie.

The big mistake that most people make about California is thinking the whole state is just a beach. I lived there for 27 years, but only saw the beach one time. I lived 100+ miles from the ocean, and I never traveled that direction. Too much traffic, and I stay off of freeways. With that said, this song brings back memories of my childhood. My sister got this record with her California Barbie. But through the years, it got something wrong with it and started skipping. Then it got totally destroyed. It's cool to find it on the internet.

It's good enough to have been included as a bonus track on a Beach Boys CD.

I had the "Barbie California dream and Christie" here in Mexico around 1987 and I brought that CD and put it on my mother's old vinyl console ... what beautiful memories ... I was 4 years old 💜

I flew back on an American Airlines flight from St Louis to Los Angeles surrounded by the Beach Boys. Didn't know who they were? Thought they were just a bunch of irritating college frat boys. Dennis was seated next to me. Really drunk. Think they were doing a concert in Long Beach that weekend. Dennis drowned in Marina Del Rey not long afterwards.

Great song and playing/instrumentation, lovely singing..and the bridge..Brian is the master of bridges...wish they could have made a "real" tune out of this instead of a commercial.....would have been a hit....actually only Brian in this..a re-write of "Christine"....
