I recall seeing an interview with Hal, drummer of Wrecking Crew. He said everyone was astounded watching this 23 year old break down each piece to the musician. Hal said none of them had ANY IDEA what the finished song would sound like with the vocals and they were BLOWN AWAY when they first heard the finished song. He was amazed that B Wilson had all of this in his head ALREADY and was able to put it out there for everyone to enjoy. I thought that was a great story of how so many little pieces come together in the end to make a seamless and timeless song
This is arguably the greatest song of 60s, honestly. The fact that one song took over 200 takes before Brian thought it was perfect is amazing. It had massive commercial and critical success and it still a classic to this day. The lineup of instruments used and the harmonies were so unique. Brian’s an absolute genius.
This is the "perfect" song if there ever was one. You can eliminate the music, and the vocals stand alone perfectly. You can eliminate the vocals, and the music stands alone perfectly. Then you put the two elements together. Brian is a true genius.
Just hearing those voices in harmony once again ! I'm in tears------no one will ever --------ever ! -------replace the music Brian Wilson & The Beach Boys made . This music, is forever & ever.
Blaine's technique and style draws attention to itself just like some other great rock drummers. Almost upstaging what everyone else is doing in a recording.
I grew up for awhile with the Beach Boys who lived next door and used to dance with my girlfriends in the street in front of their house when they were playing in their garage and and became famous and loved them then and still do...this is a great extension of their song. Thanks for sharing !!!!
Brian Wilson was a perfect pitch, once in a lifetime music phenomenon and likewise "The Wrecking Crew" was a batch of the most talented, creative, sought after (but least recognized by the public) experts in their entire field of Studio Musicians. I really miss the late '50's and the 60's especially.
@Huawei is a criminal organization. : Agree -- there's no need to pit Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys against Jagger/Richards and the Rolling Stones. They're both extremely talented songwriters and groups. Yeah, the Stones are a little more "raw" and blues-oriented, but that doesn't mean their music isn't as good and worthy of recognition as the Beach Boys'.
+J. E. Richman REMEMBER EARL PALMER AND JIM GORDON WERE ALSO PLAYING DRUMS WITH THE WRECKING CREW NOT JUST HAL BLAINE!! ALSO JOE OSBORN AND LARRY KNECTAL AND RAY POHLMAN AND LYLE RITZ ALSO PLAYED BASS WITH THE WRECKING CREW NOT JUST CAROL KAYE!!
The Beach Boys had fewer hits than the Beatles, for sure. But a number of the Beach Boys hits (e.g., California Girls, Wouldn't It Be Nice, God Only Knows, Good Vibrations) individually had a much more profound impact. Brian Wilson is a genius beyond words.
He is certainly somebody extraordinary. Every person will have their own taste; their favourites and it would be very sad if everybody thought the same. For me, and it’s only my opinion, this song is amongst my top 5 songs. My choice is naturally affected by my age and also where I was; who I was; when I listened to the song or the artist. There are times; there are days when certain songs appeal to me more than others. I can say that this song affects me more when I need reminding of good times and good thoughts.
@@normsaunders4980 thank you for that. It’s very nice to know that, when you try to be constructive and honest that there are some people who don’t take the mickey out of you.
Whenever I'm having a bad day......I think of the BB harmonies. Any song I play in my mind gets me through..... I end up singing......some people are not happy with that but, Brian Wilson's music moves me!
Hi John, thanks for this amazingly special mix. I'm just back home in Aberdeen after seeing Brian Wilson perform Pet Sounds live in it's entirety in Edinburgh, Scotland. Life really doesn't get any better than this. Tears flowed unashamedly.
The Wrecking Crew, the best musicians EVER! Pair them with the genius that is Brian Wilson, WOW.. how could you go wrong ! BRILLIANT ! Now this is music ❤
True musicianship all the way around.......composing, playing, singing, recording.....Just makes you realize how much of todays pop music is pure unadulterated shite......
I was fortunate enough to have spent a few seasons as a Top 40 DJ in the early 60's, in the smaller markets, Butte, MT & San Angelo, TX. What fun it was to be able to play Beach Boys' hits, good times, great cars, cute chicks, all that was right about those days!
I return to this remix quite often and enjoy it thoroughly. It’s easy to miss the intricacies of the arrangement and harmonies in this ingenious song. Being able to savor the isolated band and acappella vocals until it launches into the full throttle final cut of the chorus is just magical. The only thing wrong with this song is that it’s not long enough!
In Dec, 1977, the Beach Boys appeared at the old basketball arena on the U. of Oregon campus. All the guys were there, even Brian, and it was by far the best concert I ever attended. By the time they got to the 3 last songs, I was flying high (no substances needed or used!!). I still get chills thinking about it.
+Jim Southern , I have seen the Beach boys about 125 times and those chills have from every time , however seeing Brian Wilson these days with his new band is a much better sound.
I saw them at the Queen Mary in Long Beach around the same time and I was amazed at the couple dozen hit songs they played in a row. Saw Wolfman Jack in the parking lot too.
Jim Southern , I saw them in Philadelphia the same year. I was in my senior year at high school. HEART was the other band. These guys are the soundtrack of my youth.
The genius of Brian Wilson reminds me of just how fortunate my generation was to have such brilliant works as "Wouldn't it be Nice" as part of the soundtrack of our lives. Wow...it just dawned on me as I listen to the sublime vocals and harmonies of these guys...No AutoTune in use! Just real live vocals!
This is true music! This is musical genius! Brian Wilson wrote beyond the beyond beautiful songs! This is just one that makes me happy and one that I can sing to myself anytime at all. I love the Beatles but the Beach Boys were something entirely different, and this song affects me even more.
The brilliance of Brian Wilson using the Wrecking Crew for their beautiful instrumentals guided by him and then the boys singing when they came back from touring. WTG Brian Douglas Wilson, your music will be loved and honored FOREVER!!! Happiness to you, Melinda and all family.
@@mylifentimes at the beginning they're singing without instrumental backing. That's A Capella. Of course they're using harmony. That's what the Beach Boys did.
@@utub1473 that's a literal definition you're quoting. The piece needs to be intended to be performed without instrument. The singers need to emulate the instruments themselves. Here they are merely harmonizing in the beginning. You have to feel the base, middle and treble for it to be a cappella as a separate entity. 2 people can harmonize, but 3 are needed for a capella.
In the following order: 1) Watch "The Wrecking Crew" documentary; 2) Watch "Love & Mercy" biopic; 3) Read "Musicianship of Brian Wilson" on Wikipedia, including playing the embedded musical snippets; and 4) Listen -- don't watch a video, just listen with your eyes closed -- to "Good Vibrations" which Brian Wilson cut from "Pet Sounds" so he could spend another six months perfecting it. Mind blown. Prior to the above, I knew about the Beach Boys and had heard of Brian Wilson in only the basic sense, but wanted to dig deeper with each of the above steps. Brian Wilson was famous, wealthy, apparently humble, yet he had barely scratched the surface of his musical genius at age 22 or 23. He knew there was so much more music in his head, and he felt compelled to explore and share. So he stopped touring with the Beach Boys to focus on creating what became “Pet Sounds”.
It's a breath of fresh air to know other people out there think 100% like myself. I listen to Good Vibrations and Sloop John B with my eyes closed on repeat. Mind blown repeated over and over. Brian Wilson + beach boy vocals and harmony + Wrecking Crew = Perfection. I just cry cause I feel like that exact combo will never come along again :(
Nearly 50 years later it still sounds fantastic. From one of the iconic albums in all of rock history and to showcase the Wrecking Crew makes it more special. And now many years later in life I'll sing the words a tad different, "Wouldn't it nice to be younger....." LOL!
I have seen The Beach Boys in various cities, in many configurations of members, over many years and was NEVER disappointed-not once! Brilliant music will always win out.Thank you Boys for the best times of my life!!!
Thanks so much for the mix...GREAT job! When I listen to the isolated vocal and instrumental tracks, not only on this song, but many other of Brian's songs, it reminds me what a true musical genius he was as a writer / producer during the "halcyon" years.
+mosogotam Thank you so very much for bringing this masterpiece into my home. This is my all time favorite Brian Wilson tune. If only music like this was still produced...
I love this montage, Brian so incredibly talented fueled by a desire to make the best music he could, inspired by Phil Spector and the vision to realise what the Beatles were doing. Quite frankly he had the full package, studio genius.
Saw the "Wrecking Crew" documentary this week on AXS TV (and have since watched it 4 times!) and it was so brilliant it almost made me cry. Hal Blaine, Tommy Tedesco, and the amazing Carol Kaye on bass!!
+david james my friend David leaf worked on this as well!! Denny is a great guy,his father and the wrecking crew were and are funny creative and loyal to the artists they had the pleasure to have worked with in the studio in the 1950's thru 1970's!!
+david james He sure did. Denny is a very nice guy. Had the pleasure to meet him at one of the special screenings before the official release of the film. All of the WC musicians are for sure legendary! The new coffee table book Sound Explosion is a great partner to the movie. Lots of amazing stories and history. Didn't mean to correct you on the name. Sure it was a simple error as I'm sure you know the key folks far more than I do!
Thought a Beatles fan 1ST, This is SO Beautiful!! All their harmonies reign to infinity... The Beatles, The Beach Boys and... The Everly Brothers. :-) :-)
Al Jardine said making this record drove him nuts. It took months to finally get Brian's final approval. I recognize the frustration that Al must have had but all these years later I am so grateful.
I feel totally blessed to have lived through the sixties with all of the beautiful music in the USA and England. Although I was really a Shadows and Beatles fan The Beach Boys music really was the soundtrack of my life. My all time favorites have to be good vibrations, Darlin and I can hear music.
Being a teen in Salt Lake City, Utah meant seeing the Beach Boys at Lagoon amusement park. They would start their tour each year here trying out new sounds and end it on the way home. KNAK AM radio was their home away from home and in fact Bill Hesterman, then the Utah station's program manager became their tour manager and was even on some photos as the 6th Beach Boy. KNAK owner Howard Johnson had a teenage daughter named Shirley, who owned a turquoise and white Thunderbird. Shirley was working after school in the station one day when the subject of "where were you last night" came up between her and her daddy. When Brian Wilson watched the two interact, that's where he came up with the idea of a girl who "has fun, fun, fun until Daddy takes the T-bird away." They wrote the song on the way back the airport that same day. If you have one of the analog recordings of their song "Salt Lake City" before they did a digital scrub on it, at the point when they "and the number one radio station makes the town really swing now..ya" right after "Ya" you can just hear dennis from the drum set yelling "KNAK!"
Great memories! I was a teen there about that time (Murray High - Go Spartans!). Used to listen to KNAK and KCPX (K-PIX), but KNAK was definitely the Beach Boys station. I was acquainted with Gary "Wooly" Waldron and Lynn Lehman. Great guys!
The Beach boys released all of their beautiful records but I never thought for one second of all of the work that was involved in making these songs. Oh my teenage years. I was young and Naive then but I would love to relive them over and over again
ive been playing guitar for almost 10 years, im 16 years old now. The Wrecking crews really makes me wanna get better at my reading skills. I can improv but reading (as clearly seen with the wrecking crew) is a great talent to have that many musicians don't have
Hope you've found a teacher that will help you with your reading. It's a very important tool for a skilled musician. Not only to be able to sit down and blow through charts with other players, but a great way to study and exercise through method books. It will make you a three dimensional player.
The Wrecking Crew musicians had a good handle on music theory. Once you understand key signatures and chord progressions, it's a matter of practice and mastering the individual instrument(s) and those guys were beyond that.
There's Larry Knechtel on keyboards. He later played keyboards on Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water". Then during the 70s he played bass guitar and keyboards for the group Bread with David Gates, the lead singer and songwriter of the group. Also, Larry played and toured with the country group The Dixie Chicks.
I imagine the level of excitement listening to the sessions being mixed was amazing! Going into a new realm of pop music and being part of it? I could only imagine the hairs standing up on my arms.
When I see all of these talented session musicians involved in the recording of this song, I still wonder how the Beach Boys did it live when I saw them in the late 70's. I guess backing recordings were used during live performances back then too.
Oh how I so much loooove 🥰 the beautiful elastic community on RU-vid and that everybody can comment what if feels like for oneself…. Music 💗💗💗 life, eras, lifestyles, people, ideas, memories . This is so shared in such a beautiful way 🎉 A while I’m feeling this 💗💭and voilà, it felt on this song 😌☺️ Big kiss to everybody love you all 💞💞💞💞
Can you imagine presiding over all of these musicians as these tracks are being laid down:knowing that you're making one of the greatest songs of all time? The fact that old man Wilson prevented Brian and the gang from giving the credit where it's due has probably eaten at Brian for a long time.
Brian was like Beethoven at the peak of his career. Soaring higher and higher, then slowly cracking up due to his obsession with perfection. That mad cocktail of his talent, cracking up and his desire for perfection resulted in his 9th Symphony. Truly the best musical, vocal and overall arrangement in the history of rock in my book. A marvel really, that you can hear if you listen to it in pieces like this. I love the Beatles and they were the greatest writers and far more popular for sure, but really they sound like a garage band next to Brian's productions in 1965 and 1966. Gosh, the musical arrangement in California Girls is unbelievable and one of his many songs that remains untouched even to this day.
wow... thanks so much guys. These are - truly MASTERS! to hear it so naked is such a study of the inside mind of Brian, producer - and session players.
