This was such a stressful episode and it's followed up by my absolute favorite "The Bear" episode ever. Can't wait for your reaction to "Forks" coming up.
I imagine it had to be hard for Nat to accept Sugar as a nickname. Constantly being reminded of a mistake you made. This was definitely more than a mother stressed making dinner. This is a case study on a mentally unstable, narcissist, bipolar, alcoholic mother and how she affects her children.
Mikey is very much a momma’s boy. He picked up her mannerisms, like when Donna threw the spoon at 9:07 mirroring him throwing the forks later in the episode. And I wouldn’t be surprised if Donna threatening to shoot herself wasn’t an uncommon occurrence in the household, which sadly is exactly how Mikey went out 😢 Also, the Sugar nickname might be a cute story from a certain point of view, but given the relationship Nat seems to have with her mom, not to mention how the whole family seems to have bonded over their passion for cooking (at least Mikey/Carmy did), Sugar having a story like that in her past, having a constant reminder of a mess up she made way back when, and seemingly being left out of the kitchen due to it (though she’s competent enough to cook for her family as seen in episode 2), it’s kinda heartbreaking from that perspective.
Michelle (Sarah Paulson) is their cousin. Stevie (John Mulaney) is their cousin through marriage to Michelle. "Uncle" Lee (Bob Odenkirk) is Donna's on-again, off-again boyfriend, which puts Mikey's statement "this is MY father's house" into perspective. you were so on point about everything you said in your post-discussion wrap-up. this was one of the episodes I couldn't wait to see your reaction to, and I was NOT disappointed. By the way, I hate her nickname because it's based on a mistake she made one time, and her relationship with her mother revolves around guilt and shame, so I can see why she would be resentful of that nickname. I'm so excited for the next episode's reaction!
Listen. I think Jamie Lee Curtis is a national treasure, and I love her in pretty much anything. But this performance has to be just the greatest thing she has ever done. Just phenomenal.
Keep in mind that KBL, which was printed on all of Mikey’s cans with the money, stands for Kalinowsky (uncle Jimmy aka Cicero), Berzatto (Carmen) and Layne (Lee aka Bob Odenkirk). I’m hoping there is a bigger payoff for this later on in the show
What I really like about this episode is that it really helps explain a lot of why Carmy is the way he is, how he is in some ways so like his mother, why he feels like he doesn't deserve good things.
I watched this episode recently and it triggered me so bad that I had to take a break from the show. I watched the next episode day before yesterday and absolutely loved it.
This is one of my favorite episodes but it really should come with Xanax. Next week is the other amazing episode of this season, but not as stressful. Can't wait!
I understand the whole cooking stress, but most of all I think this episode really shows how mentall illness runs in blood and toxic environments are a breeding ground for them. The classic, hurt people hurt people
God, this episode was so good! I watched it with a friend who comes from a small and mostly functional family and he was mortified but I was laughing cause this reminded me of my family so much! Especially from an outside perspective, there's all these people running around and you can't tell who's related to who or how. And Michael and Lee's dynamic is exactly like one of my nephews and his stepdad. And I totally relate to Carmy feeling attacked by Michael and Richie, feeling like they're fucking with him cause my older siblings are the same way. Also, I relate to having a family full of rampant untreated mental illness lol
Luckily I don't have to cook for nearly that many people! We're a small family of 3 and my husband always does the mac and cheese and yams since he's the one that eats it and he pulls the gizzard and neck out of the turkey, but we try to take turns in the kitchen.
This episode is easily the best episode of S2, heck maybe the best episode of the whole show. like the drama that bear and his family had is so cool, and how many great actors was in here was also amazing
Woops I forgot to tell you to grab some Ambien for this episode. However, I must say that watching you stress out over watching a bunch of stressed-out people is highly entertaining.😆
This episode is a lot, had to watch something fun after some of the episodes of this series lol!!!! Great episode great series great acting from everyone!! 🫡
